  • I plan on doing a pick nose lesson soon. :P I'm an expert! That beard is super groovy btw.

  • I've got to say, I really like your vids. Have not seen this or with pick b-4! I'd like to see more funk with a pick pls. I really like the," kinda-rythem/ strum and get'n the pop in!. simple request---- use Tower of powers," What is Hip?" for a funk pick lesson. (or not) thanks!

  • @rocknhdsocal Thx, but that is Bobby Vega's song;-)

  • Dude how many basses do you have?

  • hey how to slap pick like that?

  • We'll maybe I'm not playing it, but in MY HEAD I am.. LOL Funny.. I say that sometimes when trying to sing a melody a capella

  • the best sound have helmut hattler with pick,or not ..............

  • jazzIII made me play with a pick

  • I use Big Stubby 3.0mm picks. Good stuff.

  • i love playing with picks ^^

  • Does anyone know where MarloweDK is from? and this reminds me of cut the cake by the average white band

  • i love that guitar , is it a fender ?

  • @TechSmack its a fender, marcus miller signature jazz bass

  • oldskool style!

  • GOOD bass player use pick AND fingers.

  • Dejlig dansk accent :D Men tak!

  • Edwards played "everybody dance" using his thumb and index finger as a pick.

  • wow rocking the beard. haha

  • just curious, are there any specific kind of pick that wud suit the bass more? cos personally, i don't like the soft ones..

  • There are sounds that can only be played with a pick, isn´t it?

  • yes, most definately

  • is 88 too thin a pick?

  • @machinsky108 nope, use whatever kinda you like but i prefer 300 : D

  • i use 1.14mm dunlop picks thick picks purple too!

  • @machinsky108 Usually the thinner the pick, the more stress on your wrist. Keep good technique and it should work fine though.

  • GiannisVP, you don't know what you're talking about.

  • GiannisVP yeah, and who said that? Is there any rules? It's a bass guitar, not an upright. You can do anyting you want on bass and any other instrument as long as you execute your obejective. Don't be so shallow and ignorant.

  • lol, im not sure about that, thats just a youtube's bassist idea, cuz in the 70s many ppl used picks even for bass. And if you never tried playing with a pick you should try cuz you get a different tone and can be really cool with the right bassline.

  • Actually, I believe the instrument is called a bass guitar.

  • @GiannisVP you sir know NOT of what you speak....ok lets follow your logic dicktard...BASS is really double bass which is a classical instrument that primarily uses a bow....so if you arent using a bow then you arent playing a bass.... sound stupid doesnt it...alot like your comment...fucking idiot

  • Cheers for the lesson :D i was having a bit of trouble with muting before

  • I use fingers and pick depending on the song/band but for funk I think fingers sound better.

  • lol random tuning at 5:59.

    awesome lesson marlowe

  • I'm a piano player but i like bass what is the difference between Flatwound and Roundwound bass strings? Are these the only two types you can get? My son plays and he does'nt know either.

  • Roundwound strings give you a crisper sharper sound good for slap playing and just a little more versatile, most of the more modern day recordings and live performances in rock and pop you hear are usually round wound strings. Flat wound give you a slightly "deader" more thuddy sound and are more commonly used in Jazz music or motown because you get a nice thick sound from them, they sound especially good on a precision bass.

  • cheers thanks

  • Musicman explained the use, I'll explain the production. The basic method in string making; there is a core wire and a wire wrapped around it those are the hundreds of grooves you see. If the wire that is wrapped around the core wire is round it is a roundwound that's where the term comes from flatwound means the wire that's "wound" around the core is flat. Thats the main difference. Once your son develops his sound he'll see which he likes best but Its usually Rock = round & jazz = flat.

  • @Bassplyr1470 fretlesses sound really sweet with flats too

  • What kind of bass do you have?

  • It's a Fender Marcus Miller signature Jazz.

  • @ifeedoffpain222 playing bass includes using pick, fingers and slap/pop techniques...if you choose to stick to only one method of play you will limit your ability to play in different genres and NEVER have a clue to the differences in tones...if you always use fingers how would you even know how to set up a good pick sound...AND vice versa...if you are a pick player...put it down for a bit and learn another style...

you dont learn only one song why learn only one style

  • NON seguitelo!!

il plettro n si tiene in quel modo!! guardatevi una lezione di un chitarrista

  • sei di fuori? tiene il plettro normalmente....

  • Check his other videos

shut up about "real bassists", you shouldn't limit yourself to one thing, but use all options available

  • @tom237 I belive we should use only what we need to make our music.

  • real bassists play bass, whether it be with picks, fingers or thumbs :p

It's all about the tone you want to produce.

  • Real bassists use as many techniques as there are to get as many tones and effects possible/ try to play "everybody dance" by Chic with slap or fingerstyle : you won't do it...

  • @dkcvv I disagree. I can play "everybody dance" finger style but it just doesn't have the same attack as with a pick. It could also be played slapping (not by me, I don't slap very well) but again it would sound different. Different playing techniques are more for the sound and attack than they are whether they can be played or not.

  • You're absolutely right. Maybe I didn't express myself on a good way. It's possible to play "everybody dance" fingerstyle or slap, but the result will never be the same. For instance, the actual bass player of Chic plays it using double thumbing : he will never has the same result has Bernard had. That's all I wanted to say...

    Peace,

    Fred

  • @dkcvv: while the intro part to "Everybody Dance" may have been played with a pick, Bernard Edwards almost always plucked the strings fingerstyle with his fingers very close to the bridge to get that percussive sound.

  • Actually, Bernard played the intro of "Everybody dance" with his own picking technique : he didn't use a pick, but he was playing with his first finger and thumb held together as if he was using a pick. For the rest, you're right : he mainly played fingerstyle with his thumb resting on the pickup (which was close to the bridge on the Stingray).

    Peace,

    Fred

  • mate... what are you on

  • lol yo im jk

  • what!?!?! thats tired marlowe...

  • this guy was like heres the line at the start..aand he was snorting his nice lol i think hes into the nose candy lol hes good tho

  • I had a cold - but your theory is sure somewhat more exciting;-)

  • is there a difference between "ghosted" and "muted"-notes?

  • wow, you're so good for knowing that dude! you are superior to me!

  • Comment removed

  • Ghost notes are notes without defined pitch - ie you only hear a rhythmic "click". One way to do it is to lift your left hand finger off the fretboard when pickin a note.

Muted notes are just muffled notes ie when i use my palm to mute sthe strings to get muffled/muted sound

  • Oh I thought it was the exact opposite.

  • I like the sound of pick, espacially with good flatwound strings.

  • Yep ^^ You can get really funky playing fingerstyle

That's me on my profile picture btw =o

  • I know that. I, aswell, agree that it's just a difference of sound of preference.

I'm just sick of old farts dissing pick players with the argument of "You 'shouldn't' play bass with a pick". It pisses me off.

I play fingerstyle/pickstyle/slap, depending on the song...

  • 1.88mm pick! holy crap, i just use a 1mm

  • what bass is it? its lovely :)

  • Fender Marcus miller. Olympic white

  • Every bass has that one type of sound that sounds good with one technique.

The only basses I've seen that sound good with ANYTHING is (Dun da da dahhh!) StingRay's.

P-basses are good with fingers if you have the tone knob all the way up and pick is good if you have a P/J combo with the tone knob up.

  • Bullshit. The sound on my Jazz is great whether I'm slapping, playing with fingers, or playing with picks.

Same goes for P-basses. Almost every punk bassist uses a p-bass with pick, so that kills your theory.

  • you should use medium-heavy picks on bass tbh.

  • when you play with soft pick its like the pick can be heard and abit anoying while the actual pick effect on the string isnt there.

  • i hate pick, i like al your videos tho

  • i never use ma fingers while playin always pick - thats how i learned.

  • learn it, i learned pick first. but you'll get bored with it, it's also good to know

  • same here, i got taught using a pick. i like the sound too :D

  • Can you tab that for me please? =D

  • without the pick it sound better to me :)

  • picks are good. I started up bass, and I was told never to play with a pick, so I decided to play with a pick to be rebellious. That's how I roll. I play both, and I like it.

  • i like ure vids man ;p

  • I haven't played the bass with a pick in years and had become a bit of a finger style snob but you've made me appreciate the pick style again. I now play a pick technique with my index finger nail which works quite well and still allows me to switch back to fingers and slap quite easily.

  • Me too!

  • You inspire me!

  • I play bass both with pick and fingers, but i like the pick sound more.

  • i think the same

  • Excuse me guys, I'm kind of a noob when it comes to playing the bass with a pick. As a matter of fact, I bought my bass pick a few hours ago and when I tried practicing(I usually practice by playing the bass cover of the song while the song is playing on a stereo), and I sounded horrible! It made me throw my pick on my bed and just play the bass with my fingers which I usually do. But I really wanna learn how to use a pick since it sounds so good especially in rock and punk. I need some help...

  • If going to the gym for the first time, would you expect to have larger muscles immediately after?;-)

  • hey man this xmas im looking to buy a b.c rich bronze warlock bass and do you rhink a pick would be good for that cause ill be mostly playing hard rock and metal?

  • it will...most def.

alot of BC Rich and ESP basses are designed with certain pickups that sound good with/are meant to be played with a pick.

i own an ESP 4 string f-series and the way its made its incredibly hard to play with ur fingers but SOOO easy to play with a pick.

i also own a 5 string Ibanez and its just a whole lot easier to play with fingers as well as a pick, but mainly fingers.

just dont get thin picks..they make it soudn like crap. any more ? pm me or w/e and ill tell u details

  • The best way to learn how to play with a pick is to almost re-learn the bass. Kinda like learning how to play standing up/sitting down. You have the muscle memory of your fretting hand to cut the work in half, you just have to learn how to move the pick around the strings. Practice a simple scale, and add speed. And as you get faster, practice alternating. You didn't wake up knowing how to play finger style, so you won't wake up knowing how to use a pick.

  • kinda off topic, but I find it ironic when all the finger pickers diss pick players but when they try out with a pick themselves, they fail miserably.

  • hmmm just wondering... it sounds weird to play with pick on a p-bass, doesn't it?

  • Weird? Pick sounds great on any bass, and in fact the Pbass is almost built for it...

  • Thanks for the reply! was looking for a bass... ;D

  • the old '51 p-basses are GREAT for pick playing, like the one sting used...

  • That's weird. I always thought that a P bass sounded great with a pick. I always thought it was weird to play a Warwick with a pick. Warwicks just kinda look so finger/slap bass-y. I dunno, I'm weird :D. They sound great with picks though.

  • heh nice video good instruction thanks

  • what size of pick should i use for the bass

  • Im trying a few different ones out, I have a 1.6mm that seems to work pretty good, its a george dennis pick. I think its more important to hold it correctly

  • I like to use light or medium, never heavy because it sounds too... um... I don't know a better way to describe it than poopy. Dunlop is the best!

  • I've tried everything from 0.80mm, 1mm, 1.16mm and 2mm. My personal favourite is still the 1.0mm.

  • hello marloweDK! i'm a great fan of you! i'm just wondering one thing, how do you get your muted sound? i cant get it up in my mind. but i've just wondered. by the way youre very good! and you have given me many inspirations

  • to maxi:

Hmmmm, did you actually watch the video?? Its explained at 1:20...

  • to monton:

    Who's correcting?

    And watch your language;-)

  • some of us are learning shit here...grow up, stop being so negative, or go away...damm

  • i just cant play with a pick . i love the sound but its hard and its sounds like crap when i do it

  • i just cant play with my fingers . i love the sound but its hard and its sounds like crap when i do it

  • dude you should start your own school

  • great lesson.

did you have "cut the cake" by AWB in mind when you made up that riff?

  • to barky768:

    Yeah maybe;-)

  • Merry christmas and a great lesson.

  • Merry Christmas!

Thankx 4 all ur lessons and advices.

U made a bass player out of me.

  • I've found that the type of pick you use is very important... Check out the Dunlop Ultex 1.14 mm which I personally believe are the best picks for Bass.

  • thanks dboom for that tip ... I was wondering what would be a good one for a bass ... :)

  • really like that white Marcus Miller Bass.

  • Your a frikken legend mate Merry Christmas

  • not plugged in? i wish i just knew how you came up with those lines in the first place. my lines never sound nearly as good

  • Merry Xmas tot you too Marlowe !

Only good thing about the cold is that my voice sounds somewhat cooler!Lol..

  • merry christmas marlowe :D nice vid ty

  • merry christmas to you to and your Family, thank for your lessons

  • Marry christmas!

Love your talking lesson. You are very good at explaining stuff.

Thought i might get a pick for my self this christmas :P

  • merry christmas to you to:) and a very helpfull lesson

  • interesting, i have to say i've always been quite close minded and resistant towards using a pick, but this has certainly changed my opinion towards possibly using a pick. reminds me very much how guitarists use the pick.

    nice lesson though, thanks.

and merry christmas to you to
