Working class guy trying to move into Beacon Hill. Real Estate Agent was looking down on him. The Elitist Neighborhoods of Boston are very much like this, also true with the gentrified neighborhoods, looking down at the locals with accents.
I love how they refer to the salary as 30k in reality one in 10 Massachusetts State Police officers made more than the governor year (2007), with 225 officers topping the $140,535 annual salary of the state's chief executive.
Honestly, I live in Boston and Scorcese's biggest accomplishment in this film might be making Boston's city hall building look remotely interesting. That thing is the biggest fucking eyesore in New England, no joke.
"Maybe it would had done you some good to ask some questions from time to time you know. Am I an asshole? Are my kids a mess? Is my wife a money grubbing whore? I mean those are questions right? Have I ever been good to my dying sister? or am I just pretending to be?" fucking owned.
When you say the family, who do mean exactly? You?
Maybe it would have done you some good to have some questions from time to time, you know? "Am I an asshole? Are my kids a mess? Is my wife a money-grubbing whore?" I mean, those are questions, right? "Have I ever been good to my dying sister or am I just now pretending to be?"
When my mother dies, we don't have any more connection.
So many of us can identify with this. To me THE best scene in the movie.
I feel so bad for Billy Costigan in this movie. He already had a bad childhood and was obviously depressed, but then to make matters worse he went through a lot of shit when he was undercover. I guess he decided to take it because he had nothing to lose. I mean, he had no family and was emotionally unstable. plus they paid him to do it. I just don't think he realized how bad it was going to be. The airport scene clearly shows that.
my only problem with the movie is that fact that Billy Costigan met that black cop (Brown?) in the academy. now this black cop was part of an investigation and he never once realized that one of the guys he went to the staties academy with was now in costello's gang?
Very good acting from leo at the end of this video when he goes "Not to bright... I mean, no offense"
The way he just waves it off... man he was in his element in this movie... such a shame they pushed Blood Diamond for his Best Actor... the best I've ever seen him, was in Departed.
Lol Marks character talks too fast sometimes never takes breaths really. LMFAO "Last known photograph." Too funny. But you didnt put on one of the best parts. "The cops are saying he's a cop...so I won't look for the cop. Are you soft, Fitz? When I tell you to dump a body in the marsh...you dump him IN the marsh. Not where some guy from John Hancock goes every Thursday...to get a fucking blow job. Don't laugh! This aint reality TV!" Jacks ausome!
@JamesJunger That is true and Sheen oversold it. Obviously it's no accent for Walberg and Damon. They grew up talking like that. Well Damon kinda lost it but Mark certainly did not.
@Fanik8 Hey how about Jack Nicholson? Man, that dude was hilarious! Throw a Boston accent in, and WHOA! I know, I know I'm a New Yorker, but his accent sounded geniune! I got cousins in the Bean.
The original is definitely much better (Infernal Affairs). Departed pretty much copied most of the plot, some to the smallest detail but when it does differ, it's actually done for the worse (ironic yet so true for a typical remake). Check it out from Netflix.
seems like alot of people like the british accent. but girls with a boston ny new jersey (etc.) accent automatically earn a few points. total turn on for whatever reason.
the misspelling of "Literature" in the introductory text is a killer. Unless the particular project was about "Ultimate Irony", I'm guessing you failed?

just a little trivia question that someone might be able to give me the answer to; what is the gift that Jack Nicholson gives to Matt Damon after his graduation?
Still amazed Leo got nom'd for Blood Diamond over this... this was his career performance.. I walked out of the theater saying "Leo will win best actor for this"
the Warner Bros. studio initially did not want to favor DiCaprio over his co-stars and place him in the leading actor category. My cousin was raised in Brooklyn (NYC obviously) and she was trying to be an actor and because her accent was SO strong, they made her take classes to change her accent. They call it the "hanging jaw" accent. i studied at the neighborhood playhouse and my voice teacher could stand in a room full of students and have you say a couple of sentences and could tell what state you came from. it was uncanny.
Alot of people say the original is ALWAYS better than the remake. Haha, I actually stopped taking movie advice from people, especially critics. But I do hope to see Infernal Affairs one of these days.
He made a big comeback recently thanks to Spielberg and Scorsese. His peformance in Catch me If You Can, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and The Departed are all top knotch, and I heard great things about him in Revolutionary Road.

He made a big comeback recently thanks to Spielberg and Scorsese. His peformance in Catch me If You Can, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and The Departed are all top knotch, and I heard great things about him in Revolutionary Road.

Why is this movie called The Departed?

I think the name refers to the 2 guys who are left alone by their own environment.

"The Departed" stands for "the dead". At funerals its common for priests to say "bless them and all the dearly departed" or something like that.
