Japan had been badly affected by the depression, and a lot of trade came on US imported goods. After they were desperate enough to invade Manchuria to get rich, the US cut off trade with them. This was one of the causes of the Pearl Habor attack, which led to a Columbian counter-attack, leading to war with Germany.

This is a glorious series but I never liked the the story told Wynford Vaughan-Thomas; either the story or the style he told it in. I wish they had edited him out, it seemed at odds with the rest of the series.
Stalin thought Berlin was his by right of the price the Red Army paid to get there. Its not entirely implausible that he would shell any allied troops advancing from the east to keep them away
I agree with Strong that the Americans put up the majority of troops and equipment. But no one single country won it mate. We did our bit, the US did a lot, particularly in firepower. Noid111, you have to remember that America did not even want to help their allies. It was only when they were attacked did they join. Quite selfish really... But I agree they played a large part (in the middle of the war) to help bring down the Nazis.
The Russians didn't join in until they were attacked either. And England and France didn't lift a finger while Chekoslovakia was being overun. No one did anything until they felt personally threatened by Hitler.

The allies knew the price to pay for any Urban warfare. Plus Stalin was way too stuborned to back down.
The Berlin armed forces were trying to fight the Soviets and hoping the Allied would move in to take their surrender. That help never came.
