it seems like some kind of conditioning, meaning it's intent was to harm her but whatever it was doing telepathicly was an attempt to subdue her to make her easier prey, and that does explain why all the victims of this creature, what ever it is are all animals who are not cabable of reasoning or thought and therefore are more susceptible to attacks of that nature.
