I saw this film at a theater when it first came out-but more than that, I saw Tozzi as Sachs several times at the Met. Great memories of a very human portrayal, great warmth-always a fine actor in everything he did. With his death last week, it's great that one of his greatest roles is preserved. I forgot how rich and easy his voice was.
This surely is one of the best performances of this great scene; excellent German wedded to Itlaian legato all topped with the gorgous sound ot Tozzi's voice. I wonder why he never sang at Bayreuth? Would you prefer Theo Adam over this?
I heard Tozzi sing Sachs at the Met. He got a standing ovation at his curtain call at the end. The most beautiful rendering of this role that I've ever seen. His Daland and Rocco were wonderful, as well. Bravo Tozzi!
When Tozzi first sang Sachs at Bayreuth his wife warned him that the audience might not be receptive to an Italian-American singing one the most beloved of German roles. After the first act the audience was completely quiet, and he was mortified that they hated him and would eat him alive at the curtain call. However, to his shock, as he made his second act entrance the audience started chanting "Tozzi! Tozzi! Tozzi!"

Giorgio's wife does tell that story, but it is not of Bayreuth. The story comes from this production in Hamburg.

Only one thing wrong with this tale - Tozzi never sang Sachs (nor anything else for that matter) at Bayreuth.

Great performance! You don't often hear a heavy voice that is used in a subtle way. Fine artist.
