I was fortunate enough to sing with Jojo Mayer at The Remo Drum Festival at the Excel Centre, he can hold his sticks in a number of different ways and whichever way he chooses, he can still tear up a groove, we did The Ocean by Led Zep and he dropped the track into a Drum n Bass feel, just awesome...
Don't get too hung up on the 'how & why', it's the end result that counts. If he played for Stevie Wonder, would Stevie give a rats ass about how he held the sticks? No - of course not, he can't see! It's always more beneficial to listen with the ears, not the eyes.
search for "Emily Remler Jojo Mayer", Jojo in 1985 I think it was. He plays alot of styles professionally before he made his own d&b/dub/dance/new age path.
@thedrumdoctor cant listen with just your ears after becoming a drummer. thats actually a downside of being a drummer. I could appreciate music in a another, better way I feel, before I started playing. Now I always analyze everything and miss out on a lot of music
I would not play funk with traditional grip!! Hell no. Most professional drummers would not! You want to play with the shoulder of the sticks and a more german grip with moeller strikes with left hand.
@PositivelyBored i know i see your point, i would do it too, its just that jojo mayer is always playing trad grip and i just found it unusual that he was playing matched.
too bad gene lake couldn't make this date.
