  • That is the right call. If he wouldve faked the audible and stood still it wouldn't have been called.

  • To deceive, thats the whole point of the play lol

  • they needed to call that on texas tech vs baylor, when a tech backup qb (#3)changed his jersey after pregame warm-ups, and came out in (#85). they put him in as a wide reciever and ran a reverse-pass with him throwing. I agree with this call. If I was the ref I would have tossed the qb.

  • @monicasjoy That is a whole different issue, but also illegal, pretty cheap!

  • This is amazing. Oh my god that's awesome

  • They needed to do that against AIR FORCE when they were already up by 31-7?

  • mormons are fine, except they wont leave my doorbell alone

  • @ManningElite true, very true. i am mormon and yes i do think mormons are a little pushy about getting people to join the mormon faith.

  • im confused isnt "trying to deceive" the whole piont of it

  • Aren't you trying to decieve on every play?

  • That's just a little too stingy

just like their little premadonna mid passing game

  • This would be a play where if I ever saw it on film, it's nite nite to the QB. Kind of cheap in my eyes.

  • Bullshit call!

  • It is exactly the correct call, there is no such thing as deception during a dead ball. To deceive as to whether or not the snap is imminent or not is exactly what the rule states. It usually goes w/o being penalized, but it is usually only used in little league, dumb try! Anybody says it is legal; on what did you base your decision? HOw many times have you read the rules? Clearly Zero, just like every other know it all. I have read it many times and it is specifically addressed.

  • @Huge291 The correct call?????sir you are a dumbfuck!!!!

  • @ROB6ZOMBIE666 You are clearly a very articulate person by your use of the English language and you have clearly supported your ridiculous unfounded opinion with a vulgarity as a clear sign of absolutely nothing being between your ears. Look up rule 9.9.1 in NFHS rules and lookup page 241 section VII in NCAA or just have your mom read it for you.

  • @Huge291 The site won't allow posting outside links, so you need to look them up on ncaa . org and nfhs . org

  • Aside from it being a ridiculous call (and it was) why did BYU feel the need to run this play when they were leading 31-7? Talk about rubbing your opponent's nose in it.

  • Did this as a Powder Puff Coach, Refs called the same thing... really ref? its powder puff.

  • They could call congress on this anytime, "Trying to deceive!"

  • Almost as good as "givin' him the business!"

  • Isn't that the whole point of the offense, to try to deceive the defense?

  • ref is like wait what um...*panic* flag!

  • Hilarious... gotta love Max Hall's face after the penalty. I would be mad about the penalty, but its the MWC, what do you expect?

  • I was there.

  • I have a hard time believing that the refs didn't make up that rule. That call is the biggest load of horseshit I've ever seen from a college football game.

  • Football teams should not be allowed to do play-action passes anymore because it is attempting to deceive the defense making them think you handed it off but really you are passing it.

  • THAT CALL WAS BULLSHIT

  • Attempt to deceive? Is that even a real call?

  • yea BYU and ND have no room to talk. I am mormon. But I hate both of those schools.

  • That's it! Trick plays are illegal!

  • Asinine, absolutely asinine.

  • BYU deserved it. I'll admit, weird call. But BYU gets away with so much other crap so it's ok

  • @Sammoab

    Meh

  • Total bullshit. Attempting to Deceive is for plays such as the Fumblerooski and the like. Here the quarterback is in motion and the snap goes to the back, bad call, bad ref.

  • i thought the whole point of football was to decieve the opponent! what is a draw play? what is a play action? what is a blitz? what is a reverse? This is the worst /made up call i have ever heard. what a joke. this ref should be decapitated.

  • Maybe BYU needs to get rid of their sports. Years of beating down their opponents has done nothing but bring hostility and resentment to the church. In the Mountain West they are EVERYBODY'S rivalry game. Usually you don't like your rival that much.

  • that is fucking stupid thats like saying here is a penalty for outsmarting your opponent....

  • isn't max hall mormon? ironic how he's "trying to deceive" lol. the lord punished him by ways of an incomplete pass on the very next play. XD

  • @txiong076 Yeah, they were also winning the game 31-7. Dumbass.

  • @Duckman1337 no shit sherlock.

  • I was there for this game, I checked the rule book (kind of a geek, I know): the attempting to deceive call refers to the hiding of the ball behind any piece of equipment. That is the only "deception" call, and it is a 10-yard penalty. This was a made up rule and nothing more.

  • Isn't there some rule about how the offense has to be "set" (meanng not moving) prior to the snap? Maybe that's the rule they violated. Now, whether that rule SHOULD be there is another question altogether ...

  • @nasaguy might have been a new rule that season, because the year before BYU scored against Utah doing the same play.

  • Isn't "deceiving the defense" what offenses are SUPPOSED to do? This has got to be one of the most ridiculous calls ever. Nothing was illegal, they just ran the play and the defense didn't react to the ball/play quick enough.

  • Max Hall is such a punk. Im BYU all the way and i cannot stand him

  • Attempting to decieve? haha Air Force's whole offense is based on decieving

  • Where's Harvey?

  • attempting to deceive? were they supposed to tell the defense EXACTLY what they were gonna do? i didn't know that attempting to win the game was a penalty.....

  • @jesuswashere12ad i care

  • @jesuswashere12ad Kind of sounds like you care. Just saying.

  • @chasejk How does it sound like i care if i implied killing every single mormon? Did you like drink a gallon paint thinner or something?

  • @jesuswashere12ad Obviously english comprehension is not your strong suit, so I'll spell it out for you. Ready? If you didn't care... Are you still with me? If you didn't care, you wouldn't be posting hateful comments about people that you don't care about. Now move on and don't care about another group of people.

  • @jesuswashere12ad Back off. I'm not mormon myself, but I live in Utah and live surrounded by them daily and they are great people. Don't disrespect them.

  • Hall plays for the TURDS now! the ARMPIT of the nfc west! cardinals SUCK!! GO 9ERS!!

  • Football is all about trying to deceiving the opponent.

  • It's all good BYU we beat the crap outta you guys this year anyways ;-) Good luck being independent, you guys at BYU always had the nicest fans.

  • trying to decive? we did decieve them

  • People do that in high school all the time, nothing wrong with doing it in college

  • That play was fuckin' awesome... lame call.

  • (this ploy is legal in high school football) quarterback is acting like he's asking the refs for a clean ball while the center snaps it to a running back!.../ @ milwaukee

  • oh the fumblerooski(however you spell it) is also illegal

  • its illegal because it fools the opposing defense into thinking the other team is either calling a timeout/stopping the play or has no intention of snapping the ball at that time, which leaves them unable to respond to any action the other team takes. it is simply an unfair play. now if they did a trick play after the ball is snapped, perfectly legal. but because the biggest aspect of the play happens before the ball is snapped its illegal.

  • They flagged him for lying. Awesome.

  • Wow, I never saw that call before. They did the exact same play against Utah in 2008 and nobody complained.

  • Today: Air Force 35 BYU 14 :)

  • @sandythebear Congrats on the win, you beat the worst BYU team in a decade.

  • @cwhazzoo It was time for somebody else to win in the MWC

  • @sandythebear

This was the beginning of the end to our season. But I still love my Cougars (and honestly, of all the MWC teams to lose to, I'd choose Air Force).

  • Lol ok, so a play action pass would fall into this category? What about a counter handoff? A Zone Read? What a dumb call.

  • Attempting to deieve? what kind of bull shit call is that ref?

  • Idk. I think I might agree with it. I mean if a coach has to resort to pretending like something is wrong and get players to act then I don't agree with it. There's another play like this called "wrong ball" (just youtube it) and that has also become an unsportsmanlike conduct play as well. Pretty much anything that involves trying to get the defense to think it's a dead ball in unsportsmanlike conduct.

  • I think this is ridiculous! Are we going to start handing out fifteen yard penalties for play action passes??? That's meant to deceive as well. Too many stupid rules!

  • haha thats just funny dumbest call i have ever heard of lol i wonder if that ref just didn't like byu or something but it was funny to watch but anyway i love byu GO COUGARS!!!

  • That was the biggest bull sh*t call ever!!!

  • I think the guy must have said somthing that illegal. You see defensive players get penalized sometimes for imitating the snap count and I imaging it was somthing along those lines.

  • gayest call ever. the same thing was kay at utah

  • I think the poor sportmanship was running a trick play at the goal line when you're already up by 24. This is one of the problems in college football. There is a huge disparity in talent level between a lot of the teams and the NCAA gives the FBS teams an incentive to run up the score on a weak opponent.

  • @bcbenp44

If you're a college football fan, you should know that a 24 point lead with 20 minutes left to play isn't a sure win. if you complained any more, people might start thinking you're a UofU or Wyo fan.

  • Interesting play, I guess its like the commentators said, it all has to do with what the QB calling.

  • Trying to decieve=TRICK PLAY. It's football, teams do it all the time. Great post, funniest call I've ever heard.

  • @Justwatchin8282 nah. its in the rules. anything after the snap is legal. anything deceitful before the snap is an unsportsmanlike penalty

  • @Taxi502 Makes sence, never heard of that til now, thanks for elaborating on that. Glad it's football season!

  • Attempting to deceive is a huge part of any sport. A curveball in baseball. A post pattern in football. A no-look pass in basketball. Fake to the outside, then pass on the inside in Nascar......... The referees, officials, umpires have overstepped their boundaries and ruined it for the fans. This fake-out play on the video is a good play. Religion is irrelevant, comment on the topic please. No I am not mormon.

  • People, honestly. This is football not religion class. If you start arguing about Mormons. vs the world I will delete you comment. Stay focused on the call, not the religion. Otherwise I could spend the whole day long dissing Notre Dame, Boston College, and Gonzaga for being private religious schools, but I won't because that has NOTHING to do with football. Love and peace.

  • Yeah but it's just a little debate, nothing wrong with it. BYU and Air Force suck anyway, so it'd be boring to just talk about them and/or the play.

  • @deshawnnielsen AMEN, Religion should not matter at all while playing, it was a wierd, unheared of call. That is all people should be talking about.

  • @deshawnnielsen didn't know BC was a religious school

  • @deshawnnielsen

First poster that I have ever seen saying what has to be said, it is about the game, not which thing you believe.....Thank you!

  • what does this call even mean i have never heard of it

  • The Mormons history is based on deception.

Brigham Young deceived the whole congregation

to get them to start their famous exodus from Illinois to Utah.

  • Comment removed

  • Atta girl Kelly. Hahaha i love it

  • thank you for being intelligent

  • A Mormon deceiving somebody? NEVER!

  • whatever i dont care GO GATORS

  • did they score

  • Hey contingent its called football, nobody's gonna go easy on anyone.

  • the whole concept of sports is to decieve. Why do people juke, crossover, run a play action, change the snap count, put players in motion, stop and go routes, hard count, the list is fucking endless

fuck this call they should have been ready

  • Good call from the ref in my opinion. Fun play though :)

  • 3rd quarter, BYU leads by 4 possessions. and they want to run a retarded play for an insignificant touchdown in the redzone. Retarded coach and retarded smile from the retarded QB.

  • yeah, as retarded as Utah kicking an onside kick when they are up by 40???

  • yeah just as retarded. must suck to be a fan of a retarded team just like how it must suck to be a fan of utah getting whipped by tcu. :)

  • correction both retarded BYU and UTAH getting man handled by TCU. :)

  • why BYU wants to run a stupid silly play on 2nd and GOAL is beyond me.

  • Is like watching "the longest yard" again and again XD

  • LMFAO that's awesome!!! (the play, not the call) They should've counted the touchdown just because of the creativity lol

  • that was horse manure! that was clearly a touchdown. c'mon, "attempting to deceive"? LOL!

  • Comment removed

  • LOLZ!!

  • I come from Utah and anything that contributes to BYU losing is always a good thing. Go Utes

  • BYU football is dumb because the players are, for the most part, older. Unfair advantage.

  • oh yeah pick on the mormons...real fair big guy

  • Why can't you pick on the Mormons? Their beliefs are even more retarded than regular Christian ones are.

  • I grew up around Mormons. Their beliefs are fucking stupid as hell, and they reproduce like jackrabbits...

  • My can we say bigot??

  • I don't think so, since it's pretty much accepted that Mormon beliefs are even more ridiculous than other beliefs.

  • Oh, so because you rationalize lots of people believing another person's beliefs are ridiculous it makes it okay to be a bigot. ok, got it.

  • Still have no idea what you're talking about, I'm not a bigot.

I think all religion is bullshit, but I just believe that Mormon beliefs are a little more ridiculous, nothing wrong with my opinion. Now if I said all Mormons are stupid, that would be being a bigot.

  • WTF!

  • oh come on these penalties are ruining the game jeez

  • wtf was wrong with that?

  • Next thing you know they'll have a penalty for "attempting to win". Sheesh...football is becoming just as stupid as the US legal system.

  • On 11/13/09 the NCAA released a memo ("NCAA Football Clarification and Play Situations Bulletin No. 3") wherein Paragraph 2 outlines a substantially similar play subject to penalty. HOWEVER, contrary to other posts, there is a DISTINCT DIFFERENCE between the Bulletin and the events of 11/21/09. Specifically, the Bulletin states that the QB is "ALMOST TO THE SIDELINE" when the ball is snapped. That level of deceit did not occur on 11/21 but the seed was planted w/ the refs. Google it.

  • A mormon...trying to decieve...lol

Anybody else find that, ummm..ironic? D'oh!

  • that is not a fuckin penalty. ppl do that all the time and this is the first time ive seen them throw a flag for it. i think the ref was payed off.

  • you're

  • stupid stupid stupid ref

  • LMAO thats hilarious!

  • so if a QB fakes a spike and throws it down field, wouldn't that also be "trying to deceive?

  • Ridiculous call. I have seen this play run numerous times. BYU ran it last year with perfection. A flag was never thrown. When the referees were asked about the call they said there was an "internal memo" that made them feel they needed to call the penalty.

  • Bad call, good play. Do it again.

  • I before E except after C. Get it right! Deceive. =P

  • LOL Good gradeschool memories

  • lolololol funny play!

  • The key is he put his hands under center, which means he has to take the snap. The Colts got this called on them once or twice that I remember for the same reason, although it's generally called illegal formation or motion.. The ref was just trying to be witty

  • really i didnt know wow

  • oh c'mon now. that's just creative play making. nothing wrong with that. that was a nit picky flag.

  • weird. The qb went into motion, nobody else moved, and a direct snap (wildcat) to the rb. What rule did it break?

  • Good call. I think the point is that the QB looked like he was trying to stop the play. Then the ball is hiked. Look at the ref's face - that tells you everything.

  • American football is gay

  • soccer is more boring than golf, basketball, and tennis put together.

  • I like soccer and American Football. I am American and not a Redneck. If you don't like a sport then don't watch it.

  • yeah because i'm concerned with what everyone else in the world is watching. and not everyone that watches american football is a beer drinking redneck. stop generalizing. i didn't generalize those that watch soccer as "eurotrash assholes with bad teeth and a stupid accent, drinking wine and beating their wives."

  • so ur saying soccer is only played in europe ?? hahah dumbass

  • like you, i was ignorantly generalizing. pay attention.

  • well what i said is kind of true...i been to America and seen what u guys do so yea most of u are rednecks expect like the east coast

  • i've been to france and i rann into 3 very rude frenchmen. and then there were the offputting brits from the RAF that i hung out with in saudi arabia, all of which were rude as well. so by your logic, i can say that every french person and every brit is a rude asshole. what part of "stop generalizing" are you not understanding? just because you ran into some douchebags on the east coast, doesn't mean everyone on the east coast is like that. try using some logic for once.

  • dude everyone knows the french are retards

  • once again, you're missing the point. but that doesn't surprise me at all. arguing with you is a waste of time. i'd get more intelligent responses from my dog.

  • really ????? dammmmmmmmmmm those rednecks must be really smart if they can make a dog speak when most of them cant even read

  • oh. i see what the problem is. you're 19. nevermind. i understand now.

  • it also says im from america ! u belive that 2 ? hahahahahahah

  • judging by your comments and your inability to understand the most basic of logic, i'd say it was true.

  • you are sincerely one of he most uneducated individuals i have ever had the displeasure of coming across. it waould be fantastic if you would stop exposing the world to your idiocy.

  • above meant for ClickHere2CMyAccount

  • @tbelew91 If you plan to insult someone on their intelligence, at least try to do so without typos. Thank you.

  • @allenrw3 hes an idiot, but youre generalizing 19 year olds.

  • thank you peanut gallary. i lay awake at night wondering what random assholes think about my comments.

  • there mormon.

  • you've been to most of america?..kuz thats alot of ground to cover..you say "most of u are rednecks"..you would have to travel around "most of America" to say that..lets just say the region you visited had alot of rednecks, and lets not generalize "most" of America

  • @anythung22 lets hope 2010 is the year people realise a lot is 2 words.

  • Never seen a negro and a redneck in the same man.
