  • this was great. Didn't change the song. Didn't try to upstage the song

Just a well played rendition to a song I love. Trespect

  • hell fuckin yeah

  • chillzzzzzzzz every single time

  • Comment removed

  • cant even imagine! i get goosebumps listening to this.... Never got to see Jerry but miss him all the same

  • I wish there was some footage of this!!!

  • I was there. The whole show was great.

  • i still get chills listening to this.... the crowd was going absolutely bananas!!

  • Love this <3 phish did amazing with this song !

  • "Where do you keep your stereo, Jer?" Anyone? Anybody?

It's etched into the runout on the vinyl studio version of Terrapin Station, but don't take my word for it. Always check things out for yourself.

  • Phish Rules ! go to one show n come back and report . enough said ....

  • i was a big deadhead back in the day and drove from nyc to virginia to see phish for the very first time at this show. when this song began everyone freaked out, girls were crying out in joy, and smiles were everywhere! i was blownaway!

  • I remember making my girlfriend at the time come with me to this show. She was a huge deadhead but she despised Phish. Her face was priceless. Just one of those things. Great moment.

  • Well. if U don't wanna stoop to Lisa's level why call her an ignorant moron???? I think this is a girl who's on my FB. Not sure but somebody sent this link out. Anyway she always has strong opinions. They don't bother me at all as everyone's entitled to them. Besides calling Phish Phans Phools I agree with some of what she said. Oh well. Tributes to Jerry are cool but taking on Terrapin is not gonna be in whoever tries to do its best interest if you compare it to the Dead.. It's awful

  • IMO this is a perfect example why The Grateful Deads music is better left un-resung. Why listen to this when you can get the real deal easily!?!?! Phish is nothing more then and amatueristic band that have a bunch of fools following them around thinking their some sorta Dead Head. A true Jerry fan wouldn't listen to this for more then a minute. Not to mention your supporting a sheep in Mike Gordon that like to take pictures of young children. He almost got himself killed for it. Get a life!

  • @MsLisaharding

I wont stoop to your level and get in a "Youtube fight" but use this website and enter, 'Prague Ghost' or 'Good Times Bad Times Phish' or '6/13/94 Reba' or '12/6/97 phish' or '10/31/94 Reba' or... well you get the idea you ignorant moron. I realize Phish, Trey mostly, has declined significantly but to describe them as amateurs is just incorrect. Have a good day, hope you figure it out.

  • @MsLisaharding sobertrey i will stoop her level because she has no idea what shes talking about obviously, Lisa you should realize that they are similar band knowing that they are both jam bands.. there not copying the gateful dead they a merely doing a cover like they would to ANY other band that has good songs, I also love the grateful dead i grew up listening to it but to say 'some sorta dead head is idiotic because they have just as large of a following and half of it is old deadheads.

  • @MsLisaharding to bring mike into is also dumb because its about the music not what the members have done... your a reject

  • @MsLisaharding They aren't amatuers. Phish just play a completely different style than the Grateful Dead. Phish is derived from Jazz and Rock, where as the Grateful Dead is Folk and Bluegrass. (My opinion) I personally am a Jazz/Rock kind of girl and adore Phish more than an other band. I feel bad you never gave them a chance, because they are absolutely beautiful!!!! One day you may open your heart to Phish and that will be a beautiful day! Listen to their original songs! Bug :D

  • @WharfRat44 Man these posts....They are addicting! haha..To each his own as far as what u like...A Lady GaGa fan will say the same about her as Dead Heads and Phish Phans say about their love of their band. "THEY"RE THE "BEST"Just because I love the Dead and saw nearly 400 shows don't mean The Grateful Dead are the best...Just my fav...This shit about who's the best should just stop....I gave Phish many chances "44" including seeing them & this Terrapin crash but that's my opinion..Peace folks

  • @MsLisaharding for someone attempting to sound so "versed" in the dead you epitomize the opposite of what Jerry stood for. Poser.

  • inspiration moved them brightly on this indeed.

  • This is plain fucking awesome.

  • @TedRaindelay <<<this guy knows

  • @SUPERPETE071 <<<<so does this one.

  • Goosbumps. This is an amazing one time thing. thank god its was recorded

  • Phish swim in the wake of the Grate Flood.

  • phish and the grateful dead = two great bands that can't be replicated

both groups embrace improvisation- jazz improv, blues jams, experimental sounds etc

neither is trying to present perfectionism

both are spontaneous, in the moment- rare in today's music

you gotta respect both bands for their fearlessness and willingness to take risks

don't understand why anyone would be on here wasting time hating on these musicians

  • if you like this check out the very best of max schneider or his band the lakeridge legends they r sick!!!!

  • I'm in a Phish mood and came across this randomly. I'm only a minute into the song and tears are in my eyes. Of course there is no other like Jerry.....but this is a beautiful tribute..Oh to have been there.

  • @mcdstuff this is beautiful! i thank you. these words are open and beautiful and just get it.

  • Not performed with the same conviction the Dead played it but still a great cover...thanks for keeping Jerry's music alive...

  • How beautiful! Thank you!

  • Very good try but not my thing 145 dead shows for me this just didn't cut it

  • @rollemifugotem Its certainly not the dead but this was suppose to be a heartfelt tribute to Jerry and Phish fulfilled that goal 110%

  • Best part, hearing the crowd scream TERRAPIN at 7:32

  • Comment removed

  • i was here, and didnt know what was going on right about a few minutes in to this song, very interesting reactions by everyone in the crowd began to surface..some of doubt , some of joy, could Phish pull this off????thanks Phish, and thanks Jerry!!!<3

  • INSPIRATION!!!!!

  • long live garcia, and the tale of thee old terrapin station

  • Two chords in...and the crowd goes wild!!

The impact the Dead and Phish have had on so many people is staggering. Love in music form.

    OneLove

  • damn, listen to that crowd.

  • man this is a really good version!

  • who's art work is that in the very beginning??? i've seen it...wish i knew who the artist is...

  • @VaderHold It is a graphic done for a Colorado band named DeadPhish Orchesta, if ou google them you can find the art work, and there might be some more information that way. Oh and DeadPhish kicks ass!

  • Great....... Panic rules GD were the pioneers

  • At 3:08 when Trey goes into the solo, I get this wave of overwhelming happiness where I physically must start dancing of I feel my head will explode. Also, the cheer at 4:00 just fits so well, I feel it's part of what makes the song so sentimental. I'm feeling the vibes from the crowd 13 years later, through the computer . . .

  • I was at this Va beach show and tour, this was an amazing show, so GRATEFUL for Phish for playing this for me, who never got to get down to Jerry, tears + chills still. The loudest I have ever heard a Phish crowd roared! I saw the Steal Your Face embedded over the waves of headz in the crowd, a full moon over the stage. We were all in awe after this. Thank you for a real good time!

  • this was possible the greatest summer tours I have ever been on - I am so gald this summer was a return to form/fun. can't wait for the NYE run!

  • Both of the bands just seem like something that was there long before the actual bands. It is some sort of true beauty that is some how channeled through them.

  • This is a beautiful tribute, as loving a remembrance as one can imagine.

Phish is not of my generation as the Dead were. From a big brother, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  • phish pays tribute well~ love their covers, heart & choices. They always make nice picks

  • God listening to the crowds reaction gives me chills

  • goosebumps everytime for 13 fucking years. amazing moment.

  • What I love about this was this was one of the first times they even acknowledged the Dead in anything. They didn't like the comparisons all that much.

  • @Scot913319

Trey gave an interview in the 90's where he said he loved the comparison.

  • @Yoseman1 I think early on, they were just a rock band with weird songs. Once the jamming became good, they welcomed t.e comparison.

  • She takes her fan and throws it in the lions den! Love the cover of course Jerry had more emotion, but Trey was a damn close second. Damn Close

  • 10 People are having bad trips.

  • Great cover, although trey never could quite capture the emotion that jerry expressed while singing this song. Its okay though, no one but jerry could =). Awesome job though trey.

  • Very cool...thanks!

  • will never forget this evening til the day I die

  • i love dead and phish, i dont know why people dislike one band so much and not the other, theyre both awesome.

  • @crazyskater4 they both absolutely rock. each has its style, that's all. :o)

  • Goose bumps.

  • what is the picture at 4 44?

  • was ten rows back...seems like forever ago....heard pre-show whispers about what might happen.......this blew us away......one of those moments you look at the sky and just enjoy every second...and I am not a fruit-loop fan.....just freakin enjoyed it....thanks for this one!

  • I was at this show. Great show overall. Merriweather was also hot. Summer 1998 was great.

  • BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE

     GOOSEBUMPS

    TEARS OF JOY

    TEARS OF LOSE

  • omg and my like made it 420 likes!! magical!!!

  • gossebumps all over ma body!

  • Best cover ever. Although, to be fair, they are the same band ;-) .

  • i was at this show in va beach

  • For a moment i am young and in the sun, in a state that i once knew and it "seems familiar"~!

  • this was a fitting tribute and well done. the 10 dislikers shouldn't be wasting their time watching this if they don't like it. Go Phish!

  • Space Brownies sound good right now

  • I was there!!! What a surprise it was!!! We ALL miss Jerry!

  • yeah, getting chills. the vulnerability of the vocal mirrors jerry.

  • lemme get some swedish phish

  • 9 dislikes?! What is there to dislike??

  • @kricert Phish.

  • I love the grateful dead. and phish. i call them, PHATEFUL DISH :D

  • @Steezeandmac haha that's great

  • @Steezeandmac really dude, you stole that from me from the cnn video, lame

  • @Kwameshake you watch cnn, lame.

  • @ajbellis its better that fox

  • @Steezeandmac I'm a Dish-head too :)

  • Great cover. Unlike other Phish covers really does it justice. Crowd is awesome wish I was there.

  • Never been much of a Phish fan, but I must admit that this Terrapin gives me chills.

  • @banksmc311 agreeeeed

  • this is beautiful for sure-too bad I couldnt make this show-feelings of joy and sadness at the same time for all Jerry meant and still means-while a group who played in his honor the encore gives us so much today!!Your'e legions only grow stronger Jerry!!(~);-}Just got back from Phish late Summer tour thru Chicago-you boys are rockin for sure!

  • amazing

  • get chills everytime i listen to this

  • The Dead played a lot of dismal shows? Too much credit? Maybe in your lifetime. Respect. Don't be stupid. You're showing your lack of even a clue. This is an amazing and respectful tribute to the band that made it possible. Puhleez...

  • 2 werdz for ya,... boo

  • Phish shows will never be the same as Dead shows, but that doesn't mean they aren't good. I loved the few Dead shows I saw and every Phish show I have seen... If musicians didn't learn from each other there would be no real music. Anyways check out the McLovins they are an amazing young band.

  • this is really beautiful

  • I was there with a full moon, jets, and good people.....priceless.

  • I love the Grateful Dead and Phish. I call them, Phateful Dish!

  • I believe Dark Star Orchestra does a better job with this. Good that Phish is paying respects to the GodFathers of Psychedelic music that has morphed into "jam" bands. And it is good that the crowd is into it. Trey sounds uncomfortable singing the song, and the magic that is there when the Grateful Dead played it is just not even close to being there. Not Phish bashing, as I saw them with less than 200 people in 1993 and began listening to them in 1990.

  • trey trey sounds like phil crossed with jerry i like it.

  • phil zone is completed nicely. this is a "kind" song

  • who cares?

    it's just the music

  • phish and the dead both rule so drop it everyone. noone in either band would want to compare themselves or claim supremacy so chilax hombres:)

  • I had the great privilege of being at this show back in '98. And it WAS a huge surprise for us. I can still hear a female friend of mine gasp when she realized what song it was. Such great memories.

  • totally thought they'd play this tonight, what a great show for tahoe. who are the eight who dislike this???

  • Comment removed

  • RIP jerry

  • @alrog11 The hostility prob has more to do with the fact that this is the internet, and not the fact that they're Phish fans.

  • still get chills when i listen to this and remember what it was like that night

  • VA beach brah!

  • also, i kinda want that picture at 6:54 as a poster, anyone know where to find somethin like that?

  • what year is the pic at 7:16? mikes slicked hair haha

  • Comment removed

  • Simply brilliant. WOW!

  • I just love the scream at just about 4.00

  • All you Phish haters - I will not forgive you if you will not take a chance.

  • This was one of my fav phish moments... great place to be and I'll never forget it!

  • @blightlv agreed!!! ive seen sci for years!!! they can def. hang!!!! every show i saw of them they blew my ass away!!

  • This is beautiful. I prefer hearing Jerry, but Phish is phenomenal here.

  • was at this show as well..60+ shows..my favorite by far..exceeds dark side of the moon in Utah...

  • I was at this show. it was in va beach it was near a full moon and there was a riot in the parking lot because scott gorman threw a beer bottle an a mounted police officer.

Im pretty sure they never played VB again. If they did it was only Once more. Sucks cause Its a Awesome town packed with hippies and sailor custees

  • Thanks so much for this and the link.

  • I am true blue Dead Head and this fucking cooks! Gnarley cover....great Dead song with Trey's voice. Jerry was noodling in the sky watching this for sure!

  • and here i thought the encore of "a day in a life" at the Bethel Woods 5/28/11 was epic- glad i found this!

  • I think thats the most epic clash of worlds imaginable

  • i agree 100% loved dead tour but only Da Phish can make this happen

  • Just saw DET, CLEV and CINN what shows. Would have keeled over if they played this.

  • Rad

  • Ive seen in the last 35 years over 400 shows by the Grateful Dead - Garcia Band - Bobby and the Midnites - Ratdog - Phil & Friends - Other Ones - The Dead - Furthur and all the cover bands. I like Phish but loved the Grateful Dead. This - well this is WONDERFUL - FUCKEN WONDERFUL - excellent job by the boys here. Well done - Thank You !!!

  • Was 5th row with one of my best friends.....goosebumps EVERY time I listen to this. The build up of the crowd noise as people started to recognize the first few rifts was incredible!!!

  • I was at this show. Man..what a treat. I saw the Dark Side of the moon set they payed in Utah, but it doesn't compare to this on lone song. I miss my old Phish. Ahh Picture of Nectar days..what sad times are these when drunk 16yr old rich kids come to shows and ruin a good time for everyone. Just chill and enjoy the music for what it is. art. and half of these assholes couldn't even appreciate what gravity this one song phish played for the true followers. sigh.

  • @Ninjasofshadow How the hell can a 16 year old be rich? You sure it's not you that has a bad attitude? I have been going to shows for just as long as the next person. The kids at the shows are no different than me when I was 16. They are kids having fun; the crowd is very much the same as it was in the 90's. You want to brag and say it was better and it's being ruined now, but fact is, it's not yours and you have to share because Phish is for everyone; not just the posers that know it all.

  • @pcburgh01 WELL spoken! People love trying to make it seem like THEY were there, man! And it was special, and you totally missed it! Those people make me sad. I don't want to live in a world where I think the glory days have come and gone and all the newest music sucks.

  • @migbee It's just as much fun as it always was. Yah, the band is not experimenting like they used to and I would love to hear Who teases, Zepplin teases, Deep Purple teases and all that jazz....but they really have a sound now that is refreshing and POLISHED! Man o Man they were so great the past 12 months. It's about the music and in typical Phish fashion.....they keep out doing themselves. cheers man. see you in the lawn.

  • goosebumps

  • IF you were there and remember that feeling and crying and hugging and singing, and crying, and dancing, and smiling, and high five-in, and crying, when they went into this song... You don't need to explain to the haters.

  • @crimblegnome I remember thinking really, they're going to tease terrapin, then the chill ran down my spine and back up again when I realized...phish is preforming terrapin station....unreal!

  • @crimblegnome Agreed . magic

  • @crimblegnome im about to cry right now! that had to have been beyond describable feelings. i feel it though... all of us who are tuned in know whats up. its just sad, i want the haters to feel the love that we all get to experience. then they wont be haters anymore! and the world will be that much better

  • @crimblegnome I get that feeling everytime I hear this. and I wasnt there. Great job boys!

  • @crimblegnome wish I could have been...

  • the picture at 9:08 is priceless!

  • Obviously if you hate Phish and they cover your favorite bands song you're going to bitch. I love Phish and it still pisses me off that they covered Roses are Free like ten times last summer (exaggeration). However they cover the dead so rarely you can't help but be stoked to hear this (unless you hate Phish).

  • @48amg Didn't they get their start doing a lot of dead covers? I really don't know, but heard from some friends of the family that i should give them a listen, that they were heavily dead inspired, and even played a ton of dead covers very, very early on... Hearsay for sure, but my source is as reliable as hearsay gets lol. Anyways, i personally don't care for phish too much, but i do love the tribute. Though Phusionblues your wrong about that, the dead never played it this poorly, but still...

  • @arlog11 The dead played lots of really dismal shows. I think you're giving them a wee bit too much credit.

  • @48amg And somehow I missed all of those Roses, and Ween is like one of my favorite bands ever... god damnit I was caught in like 2 hours of traffic before Bethel.. didn't show up til Wolfman's brother... Still a great show tho, and I got a miracle the next night!

  • SWEET is an understatement.......I know, I would so totally be freaking out!!!!

  • SWEET.......I know, I would so totally be freaking out!!!!

  • NICE.....

  • Might not be the best version ever, but I'm pretty sure Jerry and co. have played it much worse than this. i personally enjoy the tune.

  • okay listen..this song is beautiful period. now we all know that the dead is the fucking greatest band of all time. phish the the second and them playing this is just beautiful. wuite arguig everyone and just smoke a bowl and enjoy how beautiful the dead and phish are...peace and pot

  • Why do so many old, jaded deadheads hate on Trey? This is beautiful. Is it because he didn't forget the lyrics?

  • @forbincol ha this recording is terrible. this trey fellow pretty much is a total noob in everything he did.

  • what like playing with the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC. get a life and dont trash talkl when you you have no idea what your saying

  • I was there. The whole show was spectacular. Remains one of my favorite Phish shows of all time. Thank you Jerry!

  • sometimes listening to this song makes me cry...pure genius jerry

  • @thepgranby Can you point me to a dead version of the song where there isn't a flub or Jerry actually remembers all the verses? Thanks

  • @forbincol

    that's not the point

it's the dumb fish fans saying ow perfect this is

they sound bland, terrible vocals, etc

  • @thepgranby I'm pretty sure you're missing the point. It was a great nod to a band they had so much respect for. You do realize that there were a lot of deadheads on phish lot in 98 right? A lot of people moved on when Jerry died, but a lot of people jumped on phish tour, worked the lot and bitched about the music. I'm guessing you were slanging grilled cheese in the lot and missed the encore ?

  • @thepgranby Damn 2 second flub. This band sucks!

  • the dead flubbed as well. thats what its about improvising. its good to hear either band flub once in awhile. so you know there human. o and point at the flubs to me jackass

  • your the one that sux

  • was front row center with my Jerry dye on :)

  • @brentmydland right on man..right on
