I'm guessing the heating filaments or elements (whatever they're called) heated and burned out, other parts just caught fire, mainly the plastic.

The toast might've been the flame retarder to keep things at bay.

I'm guessing the bread didn't get toasted that much.

If you had've taken the plastic off the toaster, it would've arc'ed and shot off tons of plasma.
