The Robins, an LA R&B group including Carl Gardner and Bobby Nunn, later became The Coasters. The songwriting team, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, had started Spark Records, and in 1955 produced their 5th single with The Robins, Smokey Joe's Cafe. The record's popularity caused Atlantic Records to offer Leiber & Stoller an independent production contract to produce the Robins for the Atlantic label. Only two of the Robins—Gardner and Nunn—were willing to move to Atlantic. Ipso facto, The Coasters.
First heard this on WRAN in Rockaway,NJ back in 1971 when I was 10! The oldies were making a comeback then and every Saturday night at Midnight they would play on that great AM station!
Have always loved this song & The Coasters. Was enjoying reading comments until I saw one about grandpa... OH My Goodness. I felt so old... lol lol I was 11 when this song was put out.......Still have the record... Great song. Thanks for sharing.
i gotta admit im another one that fell in love with this song cause of school ties....great movie...great song....i gotta throw on some shades and gets to re-enacting that scene with some buddies...lol
Thanks for honoring this great record and yes, it was one of my many favorite moments in SCHOOL TIES and everyone in any way connected to that film did a superb job that's held up real well.
On a late night Magic Bus from London to Amsterdam....rolled off the ferry and this song was playing...brings back great memories. Thanks for posting Westtoledoguy...we all owe ya man!
@Westtoledoguy Just saying that, if they (YouTube) come after you enough ("strikes" - i.e. big, red warning notes that almost fill a page), they could delete your channel.
@Westtoledoguy Sorry for the late reply - I'm a day sleeper.
Yeah, each strike, they send you a red "WARNING" note. It seems to vary - I know one that received 3 then got his channel yanked, another who had 5 strikes etc. That's the scary part - it seems kind of arbitrary in the way they enfore their punishment.
Knock on wood, I've gotten 2 thus far - one for this & one for my Checker 78 of Dale Hawkins' "Susie-Q" - and am still kicking.
@SwingMan1937 I was gonna post Susie Q too but havent yet I did the flip side but so far I have been disputing everything saying I am not charging for these recordings just posting them for peoples listening pleasure click on #2 on the list add my name and then copy the say wording and then sending it and so far they havent pulled any of mine or sent me any warnings the new copyright law says you have the right if you own the recording to post them as long as you dont charge to listen
@Westtoledoguy "Click on #2"? Didn't know there's a list to click on - my eyes must be going the way of my short term memory. LOL!
I'll definitely give it a shot - I'm smack dab in the middle of a huge Jazz At The Philharmonic presentation at my channel right now (and will be for the next few weeks), but I'll give it a whirl right after, for sure.
I used to listen to this when I was little..
I still am, of course (little that is)
but it was nice listening to this song for the first time in 6 years and still knowing all the words(:
