Yes, the militarization of local police is for one thing....to combat civilians! I hope you all know how to handle firearms and how to hit targets with combat proficiency out to at least 200 yards! You should buy firearms similar to your local police departments, i.e. AR15s, Mini-14's, .308-NATO rifles (bolt,AR,FAL,G3,etc) because they'll have the ammo and extra parts that you might need one day. I think you will find that they are not assault rifles but semi automatic Armalite 15s. Do you know the difference between semi and fully automatic firearms? Even Canadian police agencies have these items, and lots of departments allow or ask officers to buy their own weapons. Police are supposed to have over whelming amounts of force so they can immediately end conflicts. I think you need to look into your wording as I think that this particular video is misleading. My hometown has a SWAT team. Not a dedicated unit, just a few cops with regular duties that get some additional training in case something big happens. The only notable SWAT deployments I can recall were for a hostage situation, and a crazy dude with a gun in the town center. The latter was dealt with by sedatives in his water.
I'm not sure their armored vehicle has ever been operationally deployed. Maybe for the hostage standoff. But otherwise, they don't need it so they don't use it.

Granted the equipment is excessive, no city needs armored tanks, but police forces should be trained to some military standard. Gang members are joining the military and taking the teachings back to gang ridden neighborhoods to be used. Be it against rivals, police or civilians. The problem isn't that they're giving law enforcement miliary training but that not every city is allowing it. It's just another example of how politicians are ruining our country.

Modernization and militarization are two very different things, and I don't see why you guys at TYT have to engage in sensationalism of this kind. The crime rates may have gone down in recent years, but the crime that does take place is quite heinous and lethal. Asking police officers to do their jobs with obsolete and antiquated equipment is not the way to go. I know that there is a moderately strong trend towards anarchy among youngsters today, but that doesn't justify cops being put at risk.

There are very concrete reasons why we are constitutionally bound to not use the military on US soil. If the police have military grade weaponry and powers, whats the point of limiting the military? Soon there will be none.
Or did you miss all the MILITARY COUPS in the last decade? They don't just happen to "other" places, they can happen here.

Look at how often the military (National Guard) has been brought for law enforcement use in the 1990s compared to, the last 10 years.
I appreciate the concern, but if the same rules apply/same tasks are performed I don't care if a drone is used to catch a perp or a chopper.

My hometown has a SWAT team. Not a dedicated unit, just a few cops with regular duties that get some additional training in case something big happens. The only notable SWAT deployments I can recall were for a hostage situation, and a crazy dude with a gun in the town center. The latter was dealt with by sedatives in his water.
I'm not sure their armored vehicle has ever been operationally deployed. Maybe for the hostage standoff. But otherwise, they don't need it so they don't use it.

Granted the equipment is excessive, no city needs armored tanks, but police forces should be trained to some military standard. Gang members are joining the military and taking the teachings back to gang ridden neighborhoods to be used. Be it against rivals, police or civilians. The problem isn't that they're giving law enforcement miliary training but that not every city is allowing it. It's just another example of how politicians are ruining our country.

Shall I provide an example? Plus S.W.A.T members don't always have the proper training needed to handle situations. Police are trained to apprehend first, shoot second but all military persons are trained to kill. Why not train all cops the right way and forgo the need for S.W.A.T.

I'm a socialist, and tend to sound like a right-wing militia member when it comes to gun control. The whole left-wing = anti-gun is bullshit. Statist progressives are often pro-gun control, but that's because they're nanny-state authoritarians, not because they're left-wing.

@dEdGrimley I don't agree with your assessment. Am under any delusion that if a SWAT team shows up that my firearms would make a difference for my situation. The 2nd Amend isn't about that its about the big picture. An armed populace isn't an easily pacified populace, and the force needed to pacify armed people causes the "authorities" to lose popular support or even international recognition. You don't needto tanks to win a war or get rid of a tyranny. Look at the Vietnam and Libya.

I wonder how much longer the Young Turks will be running. Pretty soon i really don't think we will have free speech.This country is changing so drastically for the worse.I am pretty curious to see how 2012 will turn out.
