I hate this interpretation of the director and this set design, they have nothing to do with Schikaneders Libretto! This Pamina is pretty weak and the boys have been badly directed.
The best directing and Set design/ costume design is from Jean Pierre Ponnelle 1982 in Salzburg! The Cast back then was top notch too!
Mmmmm... not the best... overacted...jaja When Pamina becomes Madame Bovary!!! I really don't like it.... I prefer a versión of the 80's with Lucia Popp
Also gegen die Pamina (Julia) kann man ja mal gar nix sagen ^^ sie hat eine sooo schöne stimme....das hat sie erst vor einer woche wieder hier in Limburg bewiesen! Aber das video ist nicht soo gute qualität
It's interesting how Eric (I'm assuming he's singing soprano 1) doesn't seem like he's too into the acting bit. Freddie and Daniel seem to get into it a lot more :)
No, Daniel sings soprano 1, and Eric soprano 2. One surprise for me was the timing of their grabbing the dagger away from Pamina. Usually that is done a few seconds later on the words "Ha! Unglückliche halt ein!"
Oh, and Eric over-acts - but he always does. It is OK here, but there is one movement in which he crosses in front of the Pamina, which is a no-no! I should think Ms. Kleiter was not pleased.
interesting! that makes sense now. You're right, crossing over Pamina was not cool, but here he is okay - I can see it now. If anything, I think Daniel was seriously underacting...experience will tell. Freddie was the best of the bunch in acting and singing :)
If I know my Eric, I am thinking he did that on purpose - had it planned ahead of time, and just waited for the moment. He must go from stage left behind Pamina and get to the door (in this silly staging) and arrive there in time to turn around and sing. But he cuts across between Pamina and the conductor, and that is not cool. I would be surprised if Ms. Kleiter didn't say something cross to him later.
@maestrovoci What is the problem? 1, She was'nt looking at the conductor she looked at them moving hear head and 2. If she cant keep track for a few seconds mid-song without looking at the conductor she would have no right to sing on an Operastage!
It would be perfect if Pamina's part were sung by a Tölzer boy too...but yeh this adult Pamina sounds pretty good though Tölzer's got greater voices in my opinion. I totally love Frederic's singing!
Mozart's bones must be cracking quite often if ever he can sense the number of ridiculous stageings of his Magic Flute designed by stage directors who think themselves brilliant and clever because they "create" his characters insuch nonsensical styles...
In my eyes such "creations" completely spoil the singers' performance.

Was this staged by Klaus Guth? The revolving stage set reminds me of his staging of Handel's Messiah.
Sublime.

does anyone know who is singing pamina's role?
I do like her in the role.

They have great voices, doesn't matter how they're dressed. I've seen operas with great costumes but mediocre singers

it doesnt make sense that the boys should be bare-footed seeing as they are dressed in suits and bow-ties...

Yikes! I wonder what your reaction will be when you see, "Die drei Knaben: Seid uns zum zweitenmal Willkommen".
I am not an expert on stagecraft, but I will say, "you aint seen nothin' yet!"
Green4321 3 years ago
@tituscaesar I think this should be a crappy try to make them seem preppy but a little unconventional...the whole staging and these costumes suck imo
