I've never been much a fan of the hippy music of the 60's nor of Mr. Young's politics but this song made his career. A compelling blend of lyrics, perfect harmony and very simple but deeply memorable guitar. I am of huge fan of this tune.
Neil Young is one of the greatest songwriters in history, his voice and the music he penned carried a whole generation. He's toured the world for over 40 years and has experienced and seen more things in his lifetime than most people will ever.
A lesson lost amongst your generation is one you will suffer greatly for later on.
Amazing is all I can say. I'm not a big Neil Young fan, but I do like some of his songs. What I was amazed with is someone had linked me to his live footage from '71. It was just him and his guitar and sounded great. I wanted to hear the song with the rest of the backing instruments and found this one. 40 years later and he STILL sounds almost exactly like he did in the early 70's. His songs transcend time.
@u2fan33 Wow! As soon as the first note played on this video, I had the same reaction. This song never fails to bring tears to my eyes. This was the first song I ever heard by Neil. I was in Ninth Grade Social Studies class and our Teacher played this. I was blown away. I went home and told my Mom - she went to our den and pulled out a stack of albums and handed them to me. I've been in love ever since. Absolutely Amazing!
Wow! A rare treat! I remember Neil Young playing Old Man when he was young; I was a few years younger. He grew into his song; no wonder I don't expect to see the face looking back at me in the mirror now! Thank you so much for uploading and sharing this.
First time to see this geezer. I don't get the attraction. I prefer people to at least be healthy and make music with some melody and happiness to it.
I've never been to a Neil Young concert.. it's really wild and surreal how everyone sings along. Like at first I thought I'd find it annoying, but it's kinda cool.
And great vibes going on at his live permormance in Hyde Park last summer. A concert I so much wanted to go to but couldn't afford a ticket at the time ... (damn, and damn again)
I always new Neil would be a looker in his senior years!!!! ;-) One of my last heroes who is still standing.....his voice is still smooth!! He is awe inspiring....
Thanks so much! I love this great man... It's great to hear what he has to say to us.... he had so much insight then, and now as well... Thanks for what you do Neil... for how you try to help out where you can... farmers, elders, the planet. I admire you immensely.
wonder what kind of guitar that is, not that anyone would know but i was wondering cause he used Hank Williams martin and was wondering if he ever used it still
damn, i'm absolutley amazed, wether its in 1971 or 2009 Neil youngs voice is still just as passionate and amazing as ever. Just doesnt change when he sings.
would've LOVED growing up listening to this guy..amazing that he inspires teenagers my age as well as ppl in ther 40's hearing this for the gazzilionth time :)
The banjo player is his guitar tech, Larry Cragg, who comes out to play a little banjo and guitar from time to time. He's interviewed on Heart of Gold DVD
Dude all your vids of this concert are just awesome. It's so great to see this again! Thx for sharing! I was hoping you had the rest of the concert too ;-)
God, if you read this comment, don't take back Neil too soon, or give us another one... if you didn't break the mold.
