I don't believe that Karl is as thick as he makes out to be. He's just good at pretending to be a moron and carrying it off convincingly. I used to do the same thing when I was at Secondary School to get out of trouble - I'd pretend to be stupid and do exactly the same thing as Karl to get a laugh from my classmates. It also meant I was given more leeway for not handing in homeworks etc.

I'm American, and in my opinion, most of the great American comics are dead, unfortunately ... George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Mitch Hedberg, Robert Schimmel, Sam Kinison, to name a few. I think right now there are as many British comics out there as there are American right now. Upon saying that, I don't think Rick Gervais is doing anything terribly original, but the way he does it is alternately hilarious and sometimes unnerving, and Karl Pilkington is the perfect foil.

Americans do an act on stage, British comedians do a different persona. @weareskaters If you listen to the old XFM shows it's obvious this isn't a persona. His success came from The Office which had nothing to do with the radio or podcasts. He also talked recently about his standup act in depth with Richard Bacon which should still be on the Five Live website.
