  • rock star timpani part. so much fun to play :)

  • Like a Beethoven No9

  • @ssk7522 When it was first performed it was described as Beethoven's 10th symphony

(he already wrote 9) because they thought it took over Beethoven's symphonic tradition! It's of course nothing like Beethoven's 9th .

  • I love how Rattle just stops conducting and lets the strings do their thing. I love conductors that do that.

  • These guys really rock out, I love it.

  • which movment is this?

  • @Suedkampen

    4th.

  • @Dally3232 ah ok thanks :)

  • @Suedkampen 4th

  • Im a teenager living in america, but i have traveled with orchestras to europe and stayed with host families, and let me tell you, after being there and after listening to this amazing orchestra and after see what this orchestra does to spread the arts, I LOVE GERMANY! i love it so much

  • @sportsfan1937 Which orchestras? Maybe we know each other? Me as a German with exchanges with US orchestras :)

  • Lifts Brahms to a new level!

  • i like how they lift their bows for the cue at around 3:04-3:06

  • The sound of the Berlin Philharmonic is still resonating within me this is the unique sound of the Berlin Philharmonic

  • i love brahms!!!

  • It sounds like Karajan with BPO except better sound quality and less violins' sound. Nice job, BPO and Rattle!

  • y are there three clarinets and three flutes when there's only two in the score?

  • @jimmyh1001 This has been common practice for the last 40-50 years. It's to make the sound more balanced. Almost every orchestra does it nowadays, when they're not playing with historical instruments.

  • Gorgeous! Perhaps my favorite symphony from a giant whom I believe was the greatest Symphonist of all time. Makes me shudder and quake and constricts my throat with reverence for what heights of sublimity the human mind can ascend to. I listen, humbled, and with gratitude, for my fellows here on earth, clasped in hope and faith and love to the breast of God.

  • who is the guy who play violin?

  • @8maxthemax8 lol

  • A master piece.

  • che bella orchestra .... bellissima!

  • Perfect example of minimum conducting

  • @JC5268 , this might be the only time the phrase "minimum conducting" has ever been used to describe Simon Rattle! lol

  • Interesting conducting style lol

  • World's best!

  • SUPER!

  • Omg best one I've heard yet ><

  • BEST CONDUCTOR!!!!!!

  • @MsIvanna83 did you watch him play the teleman song with his back ups?...oh man...like...euphorianess...

  • @7thecheryl no, I didn't. Could you send a link, please?

  • Something ought to be done about the dim lighting in these broadcasts. Everyone - audience included - looks pasty and haggard; it's unflattering and a little depressing. Turn up the lights, for goodness' sake!

  • @JeeRant Did you have any thoughts on the music?

  • The music-making is wonderful, top-notch! I'm just saying some better production values would be appreciated.

  • this is nice

  • This Brahms' work sounds like it was influenced by Beethoven's 9th.

  • Only the Berlin Phil (Vienna Phil) can play Brahms so purely and traditionally!

  • ich vermisse deutschland

  • La entrada del metal en 2:33 en uno de los momentos mas intensos y dramáticos de la composición de todos los tiempos.

  • Still the greatest orchestra in the world; Sir Simon was the best choice to lead them!

  • Fantastic.

  • I can't die before watch a berlin philarmonic concert!

its amazing! the way of everbody plays!

  • F, FF, FFF. Germany's highest paid conductorless orchestra.

  • 1:29 Mozart's Jupiter Symphony 4th mvt.

    And again at 2:25

  • @Phi1618033 I see that. Reminds me of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 "Eroica" 4th movement, too.

  • wondr if ppl kno that brhams copied from beethovens ode to joy

  • A wonderful orchestra! You can hear it and see it in their body language and the way they interact with each other. I subscribed to theDigital Concert Hall and love it.

  • BEYOND WORDS!!!

  • If there is anyone out there still who doesn't believe that Rattle is the best conductor the BPh have had after Karajan - just listen to the Bruckner recordings - and then when you are ready, the Mahler.

  • @longeaton34 their Mahler 10 is beyond words.

  • @longeaton34

He is simply the best, much much better than that egomaniac von Karajan who did not care about music but only about himself. There is so much more soul in his Brahms and Bruckner (and .. and...) than in the one by HvK

  • this its incredible , really incredible !!

  • zu laut zu dick zu viel von allem, besonders die Pauke am Ende, doppelt so stark wie nötig, mein Gott, Furtwängler dreht sich im Grabe

  • unbelivable.. Its so awesome

  • There are hints in the passages about Beethoven's Symphony 9th.

  • who is the concert master?

  • @CcCharlesW It is Toru Yasunaga (who has now left the orchestra).

  • @BerlinPhil why did he leave???

  • @CcCharlesW 安永彻

  • everything a man needs in life is beautiful music, nice wine, delicious food, beautifully nice delicious wife and all is accomplished.. even if i had no shelter i'd still smile.

  • Where can I get the sheet music for this on trumpet?

  • @thejerber44 try imslp.org

  • I'm so amazed at how musical this performance is!!!! Fantastic!

  • Berlin Phil = Best orchestra in the world

  • forget the orchestra i came to see sir Simon Rattle.

  • A very fine performance, but not with the thrill of other Berlin Philharmonic performances by Furtwangler or Karajan. Van Beinum's performance with the Concergebouw has much more energy, and it is hard to beat the legendary Horenstein performance. This is just simply very nice. Kind of like how Rattle usually is.

  • EMMANUEL PAHUD

  • Magnificent.

  • Sir Simon Rattle is second to Furtwangler in my heart

  • Gotta love Rattle's expression at the beginning

  • How tame this is compared with the 1943 Furtwangler, his electrifying "rehearsal" performance from London (1948?), or Herbie's performances from 1964, 1968 (live) or the 1977 cycle. Close your eyes and you might as well be listening to the Cleveland Orchestra of the present. The BPO's unique sonority is a thing of the past. Thanks Claudio and Simon !

  • @Demons1965 I think you are (sadly) right.

  • @Demons1965 - What do you want Rattle to do? Turn himself into Furtwängler through genetic engineering? It's fine to favour one performance or conductor over another but to me it looks like no matter what Rattle or the BPhil did, they wouldn't stand a chance with you. They are marvellous in many ways which you completely overlook simply because they don't imitate their predecessors. Btw., the Cleveland orchestra is damn fine. But why do you even feel the need to attempt an insult?

  • Comment removed

  • @slightlygrouchy Mate, I would like nothing more for Sir Simon and the Berlin Phil to outshine their predecessors but to my ears, the Klang of has gone, and now the orchestra sounds like any other first class ensemble, which they are. Would I pay money to see them? Absolutely. Do I think they have more to say in this instance, re the Brahms 1st? Nope. If you prefer this slick performance over Karajan 64 / 77 or even Furtwanger 45, good for you. And let us not mention Sir Simon and Bruckner

  • El alma de Brahms se ha adherido a Sir Simon Rattle.Una transferencia de fuerza y emoción ha impregnado a los maestros de la Berliner Philarmoniker! desde Barcelona...muchas gracias Berlinphil

  • This is the best performance ever!

Is there DVD available for whole performance by any chance?

    Including Brahms Symphony No. 4.

If then, where could I buy them?

  • Das ist doch das Stück was auch beim Hamburg Journal im NDR gespielt wird, oder?

  • @raziel0601 Ja

  • Outstanding! TY.

  • The performance is wonderful,of course.

But sound quality of audiotrack is excellent too.

    Good job,recording-engineer!

  • love to play this symphony! it last mvt is amazing :)

  • i wish i could play like that.......

  • Brahms is an amazing classical music composer

  • my jaw dropped

  • Maestro is greeting to this all great music for 30 seconds from the beginning. :-)

  • This is truly fantastic clip! As a kid, I used to hear a chorus version of this often in NHK (Japanese national broadcast organisation) TV. Now, 40 years later, I feel kind of almost desperate to hear that chorus version again, but it seems to have disappeared from the world! It only faintly echoes in my mind...

Does somebody know of the chorus version of this music?

  • I already have the music remembered, all I have to do now is enjoy the live ^^

  • just played this song with my youth orchestra...such a tough song...requires so much endurance and strength....both of which the Berlin Phil is so epic at!!!

  • Wonderful

  • Wish the horn part was included! :'(

  • This is the most epic symphony ever!

  • amazing music...thank you, Herr Brahams

  • best symphony orchestra ever!!

  • @faymye19 Philharmonic* ;)

  • White hot.

    Gotta get this.

  • Wow, it's so amazing and breathtaking!!

  • beautiful!!

  • Buy the CDs and he might record the 5th.

  • Hmm. Brahms, Berlin and Rattle.

Yeah, this is on the verge of definitive, if I may be so bold.

  • I agree

  • Deutsche Musik in Bester Art und Weise. Hervorragend ! Danke

  • this symphony is always full of win.

  • He wrote it over the course of 25 years.

  • I always like Rattle's Brahms interpretation.

  • Excellent! A joy to listen to.

  • Whoa that was sooooo... cool!!!!!!!! The musicians moved alot though. Our symphony never moves around that much?

  • Simply excellent!

  • Not bad, Rattle. Well done, BerlinPhil!

  • bellisimo......explendido....rattle...

  • Too bad it's not the whole movement-but brilliant nonetheless!

  • In fact,it's the best part of Symphony Nr.1.

    Bravo!

  • i love i very much..........

  • Wunderbar wie immer...

  • Simon Rattle has a beautiful job on this masterpiece.

  • These people are so good they can play together on autopilot.

  • @rjcherv But they choose not to! This is why they're the best.

  • @rjcherv That's the stupidest thing I've heard! These musicians are NEVER on auto pilot. They are constantly checking with each other, listening, and checking back and forth with the conductor. The BPO is the epiphany of precision and accuracy. Musicians of the BPO are perfectionists and like all other professionals accept nothing but 110% of accuracy, teamwork, and commitment from each other. This is the ultimate form of trust, teamwork, and commitment.

    "Autopilot"....

  • @ssj2destroyer - Chill, buddy. He said that the BPO CAN play on autopilot (which they probably could). He didn't say that they did or do.

  • Witch movement is this?

  • It is the last one (no. 4).

  • Comment removed

  • @SonofDostojevskij

Allegro non troppo ma con brio from the 4th movement

  • Finally Rattle gets Control of the Berliner

  • berlin phil

  • Go timpani!!! @ 3:07 They hardly ever show percussion, and when they do they usually show timpani so you gotta represent! Ausgezeichnet!!

  • The timpani plays such a crucial role in this piece... Its use in the bittersweet ending is such a powerful reminder of the first movement's ominous beginning.

  • I never imagined someday I could get an invitation from Berliner Philharmoniker! A great honor to subscribe to the Channel.

  • Yeah, but why'd we get invited?

  • BRAVO!!!!

  • This is a monument of human accomplishment.

  • Grandiose !!!!

  • HAMMER!!!

    das ist einfach nur schön!!!

  • good, excelent

  • very well played! unfortunately the vids are not longer than 4 minutes..wanna see the hole concert

  • Subscribe to the DCH and you can not oly see the concert live! But, can watch it anytime after, because it will be archived.

  • I love brahms symphony no 1, all movements! It is so dramatic, especially the 1st movement!

    Excellent work!!~ =]

  • I first heard this in the St Andrews Halls in Glasgow [the most perfect acoustics in Europe until a boxing fan left his cigarette to burn it down] when I was about fourteen. It was amazing. Thank you for this extract.

  • He is simply giving the cue. -_-'

  • and the sign for the orchestra to listen the flute of Emanuel Pahud. So he doesnt just TELL them which volume they shall take but makes them understand "aha, we need to play so much piano that the flute can be heard"

  • ho sempre pensato che la musica orchestrale di bramhs sia unica, non posso dire altrettanto della sua musica de camera

  • SharpHarp99:

The emotion that I feel when I listen to the main melody from Beethoven's Ode to Joy and Brahm's melody here are identical. I hear similarities that I can't analyze from a theoretical perspective because I have zilch knowledge of music theory & composition.

Yes, SharpHarp99, you're smart and cutting.

You don't need to be rich or have a high IQ to love classical music.

  • This is exactly how an orchestra should sound. So much clarity. Superb.

  • Reminds me of Beethoven's Ode to Joy

  • Perfect! It should. Brahms waited a long time in Beethoven's shadow until he finally wrote this symphony. It is jokingly called "Beethoven's 10th symphony" because is sounds SO much like Beethoven. It's clear Brahms loved his music and this piece, in some ways, was an homage to him. Isn't it amazing!?

  • Comment removed

  • Even right after the premiere of the Symphony, listeners pointed out the similarity to Beethoven's 9th, and Brahms reacted with predictable exasperation: Any jackass can see that! (So sorry - no insult! :-)

  • Excellent, best Orchester ever, i love the timpani :D

  • Rainer Seegers is the greates timpanist there exists, he sounds always amazing.

  • My favorite orchestra ... I'm in love lol

  • Superb - 5* - Rob

  • Magnificent and Powerful playing !

    Greeting from Taipei,

    Cheers!

  • Excellent!

  • Thank you!!! Beautiful!!!!!

    Schumanntica

  • Thank you so much for posting. Berlin Phail is in my opinion the best in the world besides Vienna phil. I love Abbado and Rattle as well.

  • love all of yu ....

  • Hats off, gentlemen!

  • Strong performance, though I suspect Brahms has looked up the fourth movement (Molto allegro) of Mozart Jupiter symphony to compose this!

  • ah, so beautiful. The Berlin Philharmonic is absolutely amazing.

  • Love the music, but don't care for some of the camera angles. I just hate it when they are on a section that isn't playing the main line.

  • The best work in the World of wisdom.

  • Beautiful Maestro Rattle. Strength and beauty combined in harmonius rapture.

  • Rattle with berlin Improve and show now that is a great conductor

  • Superb! Bravo! TY.

  • Beautiful!!!!! This is my favorite orchestra!!!! I dream of joining it one day!!!!!!!!

  • superb

  • Fully agreed. Amazing piece, too!

  • Mr. Rattle, mannnn. One of the greats.

  • Indeed, and how grateful I am to be able to watch him from every angle, and the musicians, so close, as if we are in the orchestra itself, sometimes even closer....

Which is not possible when you are even in the most wonderful Concert Hall of the entire world....

  • I agree with you.

Although we can't compare the sound in a concert hall.

    Both sides have good points!
