Im a teenager living in america, but i have traveled with orchestras to europe and stayed with host families, and let me tell you, after being there and after listening to this amazing orchestra and after see what this orchestra does to spread the arts, I LOVE GERMANY! i love it so much
@jimmyh1001 This has been common practice for the last 40-50 years. It's to make the sound more balanced. Almost every orchestra does it nowadays, when they're not playing with historical instruments.
Gorgeous! Perhaps my favorite symphony from a giant whom I believe was the greatest Symphonist of all time. Makes me shudder and quake and constricts my throat with reverence for what heights of sublimity the human mind can ascend to. I listen, humbled, and with gratitude, for my fellows here on earth, clasped in hope and faith and love to the breast of God.
Something ought to be done about the dim lighting in these broadcasts. Everyone - audience included - looks pasty and haggard; it's unflattering and a little depressing. Turn up the lights, for goodness' sake!
A wonderful orchestra! You can hear it and see it in their body language and the way they interact with each other. I subscribed to theDigital Concert Hall and love it.

If there is anyone out there still who doesn't believe that Rattle is the best conductor the BPh have had after Karajan - just listen to the Bruckner recordings - and then when you are ready, the Mahler.
He is simply the best, much much better than that egomaniac von Karajan who did not care about music but only about himself. There is so much more soul in his Brahms and Bruckner (and .. and...) than in the one by HvK
everything a man needs in life is beautiful music, nice wine, delicious food, beautifully nice delicious wife and all is accomplished.. even if i had no shelter i'd still smile.
A very fine performance, but not with the thrill of other Berlin Philharmonic performances by Furtwangler or Karajan. Van Beinum's performance with the Concergebouw has much more energy, and it is hard to beat the legendary Horenstein performance. This is just simply very nice. Kind of like how Rattle usually is.
How tame this is compared with the 1943 Furtwangler, his electrifying "rehearsal" performance from London (1948?), or Herbie's performances from 1964, 1968 (live) or the 1977 cycle. Close your eyes and you might as well be listening to the Cleveland Orchestra of the present. The BPO's unique sonority is a thing of the past. Thanks Claudio and Simon !
@Demons1965 - What do you want Rattle to do? Turn himself into Furtwängler through genetic engineering? It's fine to favour one performance or conductor over another but to me it looks like no matter what Rattle or the BPhil did, they wouldn't stand a chance with you. They are marvellous in many ways which you completely overlook simply because they don't imitate their predecessors. Btw., the Cleveland orchestra is damn fine. But why do you even feel the need to attempt an insult?
@slightlygrouchy Mate, I would like nothing more for Sir Simon and the Berlin Phil to outshine their predecessors but to my ears, the Klang of has gone, and now the orchestra sounds like any other first class ensemble, which they are. Would I pay money to see them? Absolutely. Do I think they have more to say in this instance, re the Brahms 1st? Nope. If you prefer this slick performance over Karajan 64 / 77 or even Furtwanger 45, good for you. And let us not mention Sir Simon and Bruckner

This is truly fantastic clip! As a kid, I used to hear a chorus version of this often in NHK (Japanese national broadcast organisation) TV. Now, 40 years later, I feel kind of almost desperate to hear that chorus version again, but it seems to have disappeared from the world! It only faintly echoes in my mind...
Does somebody know of the chorus version of this music?
just played this song with my youth orchestra...such a tough song...requires so much endurance and strength....both of which the Berlin Phil is so epic at!!!
@rjcherv That's the stupidest thing I've heard! These musicians are NEVER on auto pilot. They are constantly checking with each other, listening, and checking back and forth with the conductor. The BPO is the epiphany of precision and accuracy. Musicians of the BPO are perfectionists and like all other professionals accept nothing but 110% of accuracy, teamwork, and commitment from each other. This is the ultimate form of trust, teamwork, and commitment.
The timpani plays such a crucial role in this piece... Its use in the bittersweet ending is such a powerful reminder of the first movement's ominous beginning.
I first heard this in the St Andrews Halls in Glasgow [the most perfect acoustics in Europe until a boxing fan left his cigarette to burn it down] when I was about fourteen. It was amazing. Thank you for this extract.
and the sign for the orchestra to listen the flute of Emanuel Pahud. So he doesnt just TELL them which volume they shall take but makes them understand "aha, we need to play so much piano that the flute can be heard"
see, what have I told you !- "BERLIN June 9, 2009 - Doctors say the Berlin Zoo's director will likely lose the finger a chimpanzee nearly bit off as he tried to feed it. Director Bernhard Blaszkiewitz was feeding walnuts to a male chimpanzee named Pedro on Monday when it bit his right index finger almost completely off.Doctors say Blaszkiewitz underwent an eight-hour operation to reattach it, but it became infected. The emotion that I feel when I listen to the main melody from Beethoven's Ode to Joy and Brahm's melody here are identical. I hear similarities that I can't analyze from a theoretical perspective because I have zilch knowledge of music theory & composition.
Yes, SharpHarp99, you're smart and cutting.

Perfect! It should. Brahms waited a long time in Beethoven's shadow until he finally wrote this symphony. It is jokingly called "Beethoven's 10th symphony" because is sounds SO much like Beethoven. It's clear Brahms loved his music and this piece, in some ways, was an homage to him. Isn't it amazing!?
Even right after the premiere of the Symphony, listeners pointed out the similarity to Beethoven's 9th, and Brahms reacted with predictable exasperation: Any jackass can see that! (So sorry - no insult! :-)
