He was the greatest of all time and I weep every time I see the old footage of his races. He was truly one of God's creatures here for us to enjoy for one brief moment of eternity.
Such an amazing horse. I'm so sad that I wasn't alive to see him, but this horse is my absolute favorite, the next being Seabuiscuit(I know they're like everyone's favorites but I truly love them). Thank you for making this video. It's such a great tribute to such a wonderful horse.
Thank you Secretariat for such things, for inspiring us towards the greatness inside and the will to win... to win against our adversaries as well as our selves.
he was huge look at his neck and legs he had so much power compared to todays horses he was the greatest and would of beaten any racehorse that ever lived
Was he buired at the racetrack used for the Kentucky Derby? I think I remember seeing his grave there every year on tv when I watch it. I hate laminites. If I could I'd kill it. It killed Secretariat and Barbaro and way more. Barbaro's leg was fine when he got laminites in both front legs.
I never knew Secratariat but I wish I had seen him at one of his big races I love horses and some of my favorites now are Secratariat, Man O' War, And Seabiscuit!!!!!
I was just born in his era, waiting for the movie to come out in oz in mar 2011, I dont know much about this horse, but did he get time too breed b4 he passed away. Poor Thing.
I believe one of his children became a very good racehorse too. Lady's Secret also known as "Iron Lady." She became his progeny, though she's nowhere near as amazing as her father.
I love the picture at-5:02, Secretariat all by himself & the competition in the distance. Truly aspiring to watch, embodyment of greatness in it's prime.
I get goose bumps, every time I see a replay of the Belmont. Not really a horse racing fan, but that was such a magical moment.Hope the new movie brings renewed attention to Secretariat.
Thank you for making this. I absoulutely love Secretariat. He is up in my top 5. Hes like 3. I wish he would have died of old age. Hes a gorgeous horse.
Where can I find the little stuffed Secretariat shown in this tribute? I have several books about him, but to have a mini-likeness of the Great One would be wonderful.
@famousthoroughbreds Thanks for the tip! I'll have to order one for my birthday, which is August 6. That would be my best present - the ones you give yourself usually are! Once again, thank you for your excellent tribute, even though it made me cry...Secretariat made people FEEL his greatness. Peace...
0:30 / 5:17 WOW. just look at his posture ! i mean, i ride, and ive seen horses race, but i never noticed a horse do that before. its awesome, and funny at the same time .
i have his model horse, the older one from breyer, and i plan on getting the newest version that they have made. may god be taking great care of you, because you stand on my shelf. i think about u all the time, and i want to have one of his offsprings.
Enjoyed the video....a very nice tribute to the greatest horse in racing....as I have posted elsewhere on here, I will go to my grave loving this horse.
There was something great about his Derby run: the race has been called "the most exciting two minutes in sports". Big Red did it in under two. He was like a miracle.
He'll forever remain in my heart, because he was a once in a lifetime thing. I'm 59, I was 22 when he took the TC. I hopefully get to see another TC, but not another Secretariat.t.
@gotch09 You said it all...I was 18 when he won the TC & he was my hero. He will always remain in my heart as the greatest racehorse to walk the face of the earth. This tribute made me cry with joy, sorrow & awe for such a magnificent animal....LONG LIVE SECRETARIAT!!!
@gotch09 Hi Janice I did not see him at the TC BUT I saw his last race at Woodbine,Canada.....I am now 52 and I was sixteen then........I WILL NEVER Forget It was October and I bought a 2 dollar ticket.....There is something about this horse, George Adamson and Christian the Lion......
Fair Play was Man O War's Sire....Secretariat has Fair Play in his lineage. They are related and small wonder both were Great. Have we given Fair Play his just due?
One question-who is the man holding Big Reds reins at 3:08? I've seen him in alot of the videos, but can't figure out who his is. I'm almost 59, I don't think I'll see anything like Secretariat again. I think the genetic pool has been so weakened by unscrupalous owners who breed for a quick buck. They medicate the horses so they can run longer and win for longer periods. Then defects are passed down that way. Secretariat-we salute you. The greatest race horse EVER!
That is Hollis Chenery, Penny's brother. He was an economist and with the World Bank at the time. He and rest of the family wanted to sell The Meadow, and all the horses after father died in Jan or Feb 1973. Penny insisted NO and well.... you know the rest. He must have been a mellow fellow. When I watch Penny's reaction after the Belmont, waving her arms in excitement, Hollis is just standing to her right showing hardly if any emotion !
Im so glad people understand how great he was. I tear up every time I watch him run. Great vid. That Belmont record will not be broken in our lifetimes...probably never
This horse is the closest thing to God anyone will ever see on Earth. All of mankind and all animals will never reach his greatness on any level. God will only give this perfection once on Earth...his name....Secretariat. To me...he IS God and my hero. Irreplaceable. And NO horse will ever break his Triple Crown wins. It will never happen. Mark my words.
This is in my favorites. Thanks for a great post. Jack Nicklaus, the great golf legend, said that although he was alone watching the Belmont on TV, he cheered and applauded and even wept (so did I) as Secretariat came down the stretch to take the Triple Crown. Secretariat was not only the greatest racehorse in history, he was the greatest athlete in history.
Please do not let this champion be forgotten !!! Are you kidding ??!! This is very nicely done, good chronological progression of thoughtful choices in photos. There are a few I've actually never seen before, used again at the end. His groom looks like he's talking to him as it looks like he's being led out of his paddock for the night. Like shot of end of Belmont-- Turcotte with that big grin on his face !
Awesome, only one correction though. They later reviewed the race footage and determined that his actual winning margin for the Belmont Stakes was 31 lengths instead of 28
Wow! Great tribute for Secretariat! Poor Sham finished 2nd to Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Then Sham tried to run head to head with Sectetariat in the 1973 Belmont Stakes and no horse could have possibly kept up to Secretariat on that day in that race.
He was the greatest of all time and I weep every time I see the old footage of his races. He was truly one of God's creatures here for us to enjoy for one brief moment of eternity.
