I read a book called Haunted Liverpool and one the subjects was about the bold street time slip an off duty policeman found himself in another time period same place but it was 1940s or 50s and not 1996 enterd a shop and found him self back in the presant time(1996) my guise is that maybe there are holes in time somewhere in the world that drift around like iceburges

In answer to your pre-decimal question:

1s = 12d . 1 Crown = 5s, £1 = 20s.

1st bid 1/2 crown = 2s 6d = 12 1/2 pence

2nd bid 3 bob = 3s = 15 pence

3rd bid 4 and 7 pence ha'penny = 4s 7 1/2d = 23.125 pence

4th bid 4 and 8 = 4s 8d = 23 1/3 pence

The beer was 2 1/4d so the correct change is 4s 5 3/4d

1/2 crown (2s6d) + 1s + 6d + (5 x 1d) + (3 x 1/4d) = 5s 5 3/4d so he gave the correct change!

A question

When the policeman offers him a "half a dollar" for the pen, did this mean half a "crown"? (I am new to predecimal British money).

Am I getting this?

1st bid = 1/2 crown = 30 pence

2nd bid = 3 "bob" = 36 pence

3rd bid = 4 and 7 pence he'penny = 55 1/2 pence (He's all in)

4th bet = 4 and 8 pence = 56 pence (Just enough to edge him out)

The beer was 2 1/4 pence

The change should be 53 3/4 pence.

I don't really know why, but I love the way Phoebe mimics the 'and now, live from...' at around 8.00. Just funny the way her characteristics are when she does it. Dervla was by far the best Phoebe and as with anything, this first episode of the first series is always the best.
