  • This song makes me feel incredibly sad and yet there hasn't been nor ever will be a Christmas I won't play this song.

  • Always like to play this song to myself on my birthday "21st Dec"- have done since song was released as a special treat to myself.

  • @MrHed001 Well Mr.Hed, I think most of Kelly fanatics celebrate Gravy Day - 21st of Dec.

  • @MrHed001 That's really cool man. I like this story almost as much as I like this song.

  • "Who's gunna make the gravy now? I bet it won't taste the same -- Just add flour, salt, a little red wine and don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce for sweetness and that extra tang"

  • i relate to this 100 percent u r a truly great artist paul

  • 1 person deserves a slap

  • @scafish There are only 12 notes in the whole universe....humans have been writing music using these 12 notes for 100's of years.......they have all been played in every order by now.....true originality is for idealistic suckers, everything is just the modern interpretation

  • Isn't the chord sequence straight from Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air?"

  • @scafish One would argue that The Allman Brothers Band's song "Melissa" also uses the same into chords.

  • @scafish Graham Nash also uses this chord progression in his 1970's song "Wounded Bird".

  • @scafish Maybe so, but lyrically, there is only one Paul Kelly. My God what a songwriter! Just nails it EVERY time!

  • God he's so amazing... this song really make me happy.

  • shows how good this song is, no dislikes

  • I love this song. Paul Kelly's one of my favorite songwriters.

  • Such a meaningful song. Paul Kelly sang this live on a radio station at christmas and I was crying, so beautiful:)

  • respect... nuff said

  • comedy that makes you cry is still funny! Go figure,

Paul kelly is the best and possibly the last true folk singer for Australia (actual)

  • Such a sad song, it was a letter written to him by a friend in jail...saying he will appreciate the finer things in like 'making gravy.' god bless you joe and paul kelly!

  • @theman60386 It was all made up though. Says it in his book. Paul actually wrote it as a comedy song.

  • Living in the uk now xmas time the radio stations over play the usual xmas songs like Fairytale in NY,Do they know it's xmas, etc etc,but this festive season i'll send a copy of this song to the BBC and insist they play this classic aussie xmas song.

  • Thankyou paul kelly one of the greatest songs ive ever heard

  • Love this song, heard it in english when we were studying institutions, soooo nice. Reallly hits the heart.

  • After playing in a cover band for 10 years i can honestly say this was one of the only songs that NEVER got old. I love it, it will always be the first thing I play when I pick up the guitar. Thank you Paul Kelly

  • this song feels like country rain on a hot road

  • I never heard of it until my 17 year old son played it on guitar in early 2010. It's now made it into my swag now PK. What a fantastic song.

  • yeah same

  • Came here after listening to Cold Chisel's 4 wall's. Someone told me of this song and it pulls on those same strings in my heart. I really like his song Have you ever seen Sydney from a 747. He is a story teller : )

  • best.

  • letters from the joint. Time to legalize and regulate.

  • Fantastic.

  • One of the most beautifully touching songs every committed to vinyl.

  • Here's a little story to this song (maybe) no one knows. A day or so after Paul wrote this song he rings up Lindsay Field (John Farnham's backup vocalist) and asks him over to his apartment. Lindsay is the first person to hear it. Paul asks Lindsay: "So what do you think?". Lindsay was pretty much choked up by this stage and told Paul that this song must end up on the album. The rest is history.

    Thanks for posting RDKF13, 5stars!

  • @68ComebackSpecial And Paul intended it to be a comedy song! It's so sad.

  • very touching, i adore this song, i have since i first heard it.

thank you so much for uploading a non live version.

and i plan on making this gravy. hahaha.
