What was done is completely legal and completely safe. Guns have multiple safety mechanisms (yes, even Glocks, with no external manual safety lever) that prevent them from firing unless the trigger is pulled. Dropping, bumping, etc. a loaded gun will not cause it to fire.
Your fear of firearms is misplaced and irrational, and I highly suggest that you attend a firearms safety class so you can see for yourself why carrying a gun in public is perfectly OK and safe.

If they had a real reason for being there they would have done something. I suspect they may have been there because of complaints from other campers about the group carrying. Unfounded psychological projection isn't a substitute for a fact-based, logical argument. But I guess in the absence of HAVING an argument, one might resort to that, as you did.
ALL OF US were armed!! And no, they were not looking for anyone in particular, the PD was called by a park worker who saw one of us carrying a firearm openly, which is legal in Virginia.
I was there and spoke with the officers and no they couldn't "prone everyone out". That would be considered an unlawful detention and that is in itself illegal without a reasonable and articulable knowledge that a crime was being committed. They witnessed no crime, they witnessed responsible citizens exercising their rights. Open Carrying is legal in NOVA and in the county park. You don't have to like it, but you do have to get used to it.
Looks like an appropriate response to a man with a gun call. They want to be sure the people are not in any danger. They could have proned everyone out.
An appropriate response would have been for the emergency operator to ask if the suspect was waving a gun, pointing it at anyone, etc. Barring that, it's pretty easy to see that nobody is in any danger. It's a bunch of people having a picnic!
If the police had "proned everyone out" they most certainly would have been violating these folks' civil rights.

There is only concealed carry in my state, but I wouldn't OC if I could just because of hassles like this. It must suck to have to explain the law to cops all the time. You should invite a lawyer to every picnic.

Nobody was drinking. But, I challenge you to cite the VA code which says someone cannot carry a weapon while enjoying a drink or two. The law says you cannot be "under the influence". The code reads: "under the influence" for purposes of this section: manslaughter in violation of § 18.2-36.1, maiming in violation of § 18.2-51.4, driving while intoxicated in violation of § 18.2-266, public intoxication in violation of § 18.2-388, or driving while intoxicated in violation of § 46.2-341.24."

in virginia, it is Illegal to openly carry a gun in a state park. i can understand your point of view on the 2nd ammendment. but also, openly carrying a gun in a state park; which is where lots of families go to enjoy a picnic, might make the families feel uneasy. why do you feel like you Have to show your gun? just conceal it.

Some of us don't have concealed carry permits, most of us do. This is still a free country and we didn't do anything wrong. If someone feels "uneasy" they are welcome to relocate somewhere away from us. We pay taxes too and have just as much right to assemble and use the park as anyone else. For the record, not one family around us was "uneasy". They didn't even know we were armed until the police were called. The person who called the cops was a park employee with a grudge.

No, sorry, you're just flat-out wrong. There is no law against open-carry in a Virginia state park. Please take this opportunity to educate us and tell us what law prohibits the open-carry of a firearm by a law-abiding citizen in a State Park in VA. (P.S. There isn't one)

4VAC5-30-200. Firearms. No person except employees, police officers, or officers of the department shall carry or possess firearms of any description, or airguns, within the park. This regulation shall not apply in areas designated for hunting by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. This regulation also shall not apply to the carrying of concealed handguns within state parks by holders of a valid concealed handgun permit issued pursuant to §18.2-308 of the Code of Virginia.

If you are in a dangerous area, then by all means bring a gun. Carry a concealed weapon if you want... I don't care. But don't spook other people by just letting it "hang around." Cops HAVE to investigate suspicious situations that other citizens have called in. If you don't like it, too bad.

ALL OF US were armed!! And no, they were not looking for anyone in particular, the PD was called by a park worker who saw one of us carrying a firearm openly, which is legal in Virginia.

I was there and spoke with the officers and no they couldn't "prone everyone out". That would be considered an unlawful detention and that is in itself illegal without a reasonable and articulable knowledge that a crime was being committed. They witnessed no crime, they witnessed responsible citizens exercising their rights. Open Carrying is legal in NOVA and in the county park. You don't have to like it, but you do have to get used to it.

An appropriate response would have been for the emergency operator to ask if the suspect was waving a gun, pointing it at anyone, etc. Barring that, it's pretty easy to see that nobody is in any danger. It's a bunch of people having a picnic!
If the police had "proned everyone out" they most certainly would have been violating these folks' civil rights.
