Heroin is, in essence, morphine and for practical purposes, it is not possible to overdose (die from respiratory depression) from using it alone. It is when it is combined with other central nervous system depressants such as alcohol, that it can be dangerous. So he has never seen or heard of tobacco killing anyone??? Lemmy is totally ignorant on the issues surrounding heroin. Heroin is, in essence, morphine and for practical purposes, it is not possible to overdose (die from respiratory depression) from using it alone. It is when it is combined with other central nervous system depressants such as alcohol, that it can be dangerous. So he has never seen or heard of tobacco killing anyone??? A serious bit of denial happening here.

If you really did have 5 friends that died where heroin was a factor, the most likely scenario is that other drugs were involved. So you've seen the toxicolgy reports? Exactly what is your motivation for wanting to demonise opiates? They are safe drugs, unlike tobacco and alcohol. If you denied a nicotine addict their tobacco, you would witness a desperate person, just as desarate as any opiate user.

@dtastl Yeah scientifically speaking, pure, unadulterated heroin probably wouldnt kill you unless you'd overdose. But fact of the matter is the heroin junkies take isnt pure and unadulterated. Its produced, distributed and under much less than sterile conditions. The result is numerous risks are taken with every shot. Heroin can very very easily fuck someone up PERIOD. Just don't do it, its pathetic.

@gerby90 No, the risks and lifestyle dictated by prohibition "fuck" people up. Heroin (morphine) is a safe drug. It has a huge safety margin in terms of "overdose". "Overdose" with heroin only is a fallacy. It is mixing drugs, ie with alcohol that can present a problem. So what drugs do you take? Alcohol, tobacco, caffeine perhaps? How is it constructive if I call the drugs you take "pathetic" and advise you to "just dont do it"?

The whole "heroin in itself isn't harmful"-point you're trying to make is completely irrelevant to the reality that is everyday heroin-abuse on the streets. As long as there are junkies, there will be fatalities no matter if heroin were to be legalized or not. Also, nobody has every used heroin in a safe way. Nobody's ever said "Yeah I do heroin every now 'n then, gets me through a tough day at work." NO, heroin drags you in, like meth.

@dtastl Whereas alcohol for example isn't hard at all to be responsible with. By far most alcohol consumers are social drinkers that drink very moderate amounts at a time. No danger there, they don't abuse it, they don't have any short ór long term consequences. Therefore its highly ignorant to class someone who uses alcohol, who'll probably belong to the 99% of very occasional, moderate users like myself (I drink like one beer a week or less) in the same class as heroin. Same goes for caffeine

@gerby90 You are just trying to rationalise your own drug use. Alcohol is a modified hydrocarbon that is toxic to cells and therefore is used as a fuel and disinfectant. Heroin (morphine) is not toxic. Heroin absolutely can be used safely apart from constipation. What you see on the streets re "heroin-abuse" is the direct outcome of drug prohibition, not heroin itself. You are an alcohol user who is scapegoating illicit drugs which are less harmful than your drug. You are in denial.

@gerby90 If you think that as a casual alcohol user, you are fundamentally any different to a casual heroin (morphine) user, you are kidding yourself and in denial. The only differences are your drug is much more dangerous and it is not prohibited. If I was to say "as long as there are boozers, there will be fatalities" how would you react? Not a very constructive statement is it? Are you saying no-one dies as a result of alcohol? And BTW, most so-called "heroin overdoses" involve alcohol.

@dtastl Son there ARE NO 'casual heroin users'. If you told me there were I would simply not believe you, the drug itself will drag you in like a motherfucker, its simply that easy. At least with alcohol it is possible to be consumed with moderation. I've never in my life heard of "moderated, responsible heroin-user". And for the sake of a decent discussion, let's not try to make this personal. So stop trying to paint me as some sort of alcoholic, hell my average use is like one in two weeks...
