@summ22 No, all the affected areas are open and safe to live, it looks like nothing ever happened there. The place where the machine had been abandoned was destroyed and now there is a convention center in its place. The junkyards where the radioactive capsule was opened/stored are now empty areas covered with concrete. The radiation levels has been monitored since the decontamination and are below the safety threshold since then.
1-Despite the information about x-ray machines be correct, the machine with the caesium-137 capsule was used for radiotherapy. It was not a x-ray machine.
2- The radioactive waste isn't waiting for disposal anymore. A radioactive waste safe dispose dump was built at Abadia de Goias city exclusively for the accident radioactive waste be stored. I visited the site once and it's pretty safe indeed...
The trash scavengers that found and opened the radioactive capsule were like many others around the world: they didn't even know what radiation is. They were illiterates! Just poor people trying to survive in the city.
Letting the radiation source exposed and unknown, the medical clinic owners and the government are the real guilty for the accident.
Goiânia is a good place to live, but the accident shadow will live among us for a long time.
I'm from Goiânia, I live here since 1991, when I was born.
I do have a normal life but I have hypotyroidism, as lots of young adults born here around the late 80's and the early 90's.
The background radiation here is safe, but is still higher than other cities in the country. It has proportionally more cancer cases here than other cities too.

I was actually just being sarcastic in the first part of my comment, Endimion17, but it is nice to see that someone understands a little bit about radiation here.
I think the missing x-ray machines are now being used at airports.
I don't think burglary deserves a punishment of death. Maybe murder does, but that is not for us to judge. Anyway, these guys didn't intentionally murder anyone. So wishing cancer on them seems pretty harsh.
@SuperTubeboober X-ray machines do not use caesium-137 because that isotope produces gamma rays and is used for destroying cancer cells with the help of other devices. Caesium-137 has nothing to do with x-ray machines and airports.
The worst part is that not only did those dumb shit burglars not die from their stupidity/ ignorance, but they never got in trouble for their actions. It was everyone's fault but theirs. What a crock life can be. I hope they both die of cancer.
@xboxatinamedotcom The trash scavengers that found and opened the radioactive capsule were like many others around the world: they didn't even know what radiation is. They were illiterates! I remember this remake of how this accident happened. Great post even got the subtitles. :) awesome. I hope this story to be a lesson for people that don't know what radiation is.
@GSMEFMS because i read on wikipedia (yeah i know it cant be completely trusted) that someone allowed a baby to eat the stuff, some people used it to draw stuff on their body and other stupid shit like that
@cisinlondonuk at leat i care about informing people, what do you do? "amusement park videos"? "the best club i've ever seen"? go fuck yourself fucking piece of crap, you should just get a bullet on your fucking skull, fucking stoner
@notrickroll i dont think its fair to say that, maybe ignorant instead? considering most people dont even know what radiation is, how can you expect someone who lived in the slums their whole life to know what cesium-137 is? i'm pretty sure you would want to take some of that glowing powder for yourself and share it with your friends, if you were in their situation.
also that wiki article never said they fed her the stuff.

@burajirujinn
everyone in the city knows about it?
summ22 2 months ago
@summ22 Pretty much everyone at least heard about it, but more as a "little historical fact" than any "life-threatening" incident (that it was...) .
Almost everyone around here doesn't care about their past, so it has no importance in their life...
