The exact audio from this video can be found on a myspace page for Happy Go Licky--it's pretty amazing watching this with that audio synched to it. The guitar noise sounds way more atmospheric.
only demos, they were so short lived they never had a true album. You can get a CD of a collection of their stuff called "Will Play" from Dischord for 10 bucks.
thx for posting! this is so cool,passionate...like all the stuff guy's been involved in.i'm a fugazi fan since repeater and also nknow all the other bands, rites, embrace, m threat, olw etc., but never heard happy go licky, but now, although i knew that they existed.nothing ever touched me more
than fugazi and the other bands and i'm afraid
nothing ever will again (i know i sound pathetic^^).i miss fugazi, the evens are cool but for me it's noth the same
Guy Picciotto was with Brendan Canty in ONe Last Wish in-between Happy Go Licky and Fugazi. There is one record, which is great (as everything they do I guess !!)
The thing about HGL was that it represented a totally provincial almost art thing, they were playing to their closest friends and a very small community who could appreciate what was happening there, it was intended to be live so it was momentary and abstract, this is very typical of the Dischord scene at that time, I wish someone could get that DC Space show ("we will") - I know it was videotaped.
God damn! Happy Go Licky was something special. Never saw them live but stumbled across the original vinyl they released on PeterBuilt records. I used to play songs off that record during my college radio show all the time, circa 90-92.
this is definitely 9:30. i have the whole show on tape that i'm uploading to youtube and it's marked 930 on it. i was also at this show, and i think this show was 9/9/87, i dont think it was the 1/1/88 show. i get them mixed up sometimes, i could be wrong, but this is DEFINITELY the 930. you could listen to the dischord release of their live stuff and figure out if this is 9/87 or 1/1/88. no big deal.
Hey guys. I am posting many videos of Rites Of Spring, Happy Go Licky, Embrace and a few of One Last Wish. I just uploaded the first one but I can't link you to it yet. KYEO
Yeah, that was a good show. Happy go Licky briefly achieved the goal of creating a Wire-circa-"Document and Eyewitness" improvisational intelligence while holding onto the passion of Rites of Spring. Liked the Space shows a little better but they were all pretty fab. Nice showcase for "the Dischord body" -- used to have one of those myself at the time. (And Guy still does.)
No, it's the 930 -- the dc space stage was even smaller and less elevated. dcspace also didn't have an in-house video system, and this very recording of "Suzuki" appears on "Will Play" and is identified as the last gig. Also, as I said, I was there, and it was an unforgettable experience.
Where was this filmed? I saw them at (the real, original) 9:30 Club back in the day. Love Happy Go Licky!

i have to admit that i'm a bit upset with guy for smacking the rickenbacker in the ground...
I want that guitar so bad, and it cost around 2000 dollar in the Netherlands :S
