Like many others, I seem also hear something non-analog, non-organic on those demo sounds (although I am sure you can add your own samples if you want). But you guys must remember something - This costs less than half from DSI Tempest, Jomox 888 / 999, Elektron Octatrack and others. It leaves you easily enough money to grab analog drum sound module or sample kit. But just check how fast this is to get beat going, my god!
Why? There is Electribe, Machinedrum and several more stand alone devices which don't need a computer. Besides NI Machine, Spark is unique the way it is. And it is cool. :-)
i see people leaving negative comments about something you havent even used LOL...you people will hate on it UNTIL you realise the potential. mpc's and sp's are classic machines but theres simply more choice now and more ways to get busy. why is that a problem for people???
@krzone81 technology evolved lol. Laptops and programs like fl studio and abelton to make true hardware obsolete. Why pay 2000 bucks for a moog synth when u can just get a vst file on your laptop?
@shonuffLA lol the majority of people at the club won't really care though. They don't care about what synth made that sound they just want some good music.
@MrMastrsushi the bottom end on a analog synth is what makes the music good im not a gear head and with the mids and hi's theres no prob but i promise you if really want to go for it analog cant be beat
I own one, the controller add functionnality to old beatbox and it's so easy to use + now with the add on you can import your own samples so you can do anything you want to.
@krzone81 I think the idea is to make them upgradeable, less expensive, and expandable. And seeing that 99% of people getting into music these days have a computer, I don't really see it as a problem. I see it as an Evolution. If they had to put a CPU, a HD and Memory inside that device it would up the cost dramatically. Just sayin
@krzone81 I get what you're saying, but...if this were a hardware-only device it would probably run at LEAST $2000. Also, most people that produce electronic music already have pretty capable computers, which make it a perfect place for sound generation/processing.
@krzone81 got to expensieve and sometimes a bother to load in the car and some people just didn't have the buck to use their hardware and move it around at a every gig, i mean, i totally on your side, but sometimes it's just a great solution for people who wants to start and have 0 budget or a great way to perform in a different way for thoseo who have hardware
that's NOT A DRUM MACHINE at all,it's simply a software with its dedicated controller,in my opinion a drum machine should be able to stand alone. I don't like the idea to be relegated to a computer and bring it everywhere i go.In addition, software and operating systems change every 5 years i don't wanna buy something that in 10 years will be obsolete cause i can't run the software on my new computer.I prefer something independent like my electribe that is 13 years old but it still splits the ass
Spark has only been on the market for two months and it already needs a update to fix problems. What is with this company putting out "half cooked" products. I just returned a brand new Origin because it was too buggy and that unit has been on the market for over two years. Arturia has great ideas but they need to make sure there product works right out of the box.
$500-$600 dollars for this bad boy. It does look amazing, and i'd probably buy it if it was cheaper. But for now, i'm still sticking on saving $600 for a Native Instruments Maschine.
Tested it and it's not cheap plastic, but def. not like my ex 808/909 either. lol
IMHO better layout and hardware than the NI Machine. Some kind of a mixture between the Korg ESX-1 and a vintage Simmons SDS-8 (not soundwise lol). And the knob is kinda "Future Retro"-Style. *gg*
I love the concept of an interface that floats your creative ideas. Its so easy to get stuck in technical obscurities these days.. I've made good experiences with Arturia's Analog Player. The Spark will be on my shopping list shortly!
Easy to make comparisons between this and maschine, however maschine is a sampler similar to the mpc, and this is a drum synthesizer similar to 808 or 909. It looks like fun, but I can't get too excited about something that needs to be connected to a computer.
@TherapyHiccup Yah that's what it looks like to me too. In some of the videos they call it a "hybrid drummachine" so I was crossing my fingers that it might have some standalone features too.
I really like what i'm seeing and hearing. However it's a rather bold move to move in so close on NIs Maschine on both use and price (eventhough i think i like this better).
And as always i'm personally not much for shelling out that much for computer-related gear as inevitably you'll have problems, downtime and eventually you'll need to get a new computer and each little update poses a risk of rendering all your old gear useless. It's non-computer-dependant hardware all the way for me.
Nice vídeo, cool to watch! ...and I guess now it's up to people to el the demo, have some fun with the software side of it and try to resist not getting the full package, controller'n'all :)

Looks like a sexy piece of hardware. Shame I have absolutely no idea how to use one or what I would do with one.
I'm talking about the lost city.
JPotential 2 months ago
I would buy it if it were possible:
- triggering percussion sounds from external hardware synthesizers by MIDI
- using external vst drum synths
- using multisamples
In my opinion, Spark is a great controller / drum sequencer which loses much by not flexible software. Hope Arturia will improve it in new versions ?
