I have the same Eel. Was sold to me as fresh water moray.... I've had him 3 mos. now... I changed my tanks slowly over the course of 6 weeks to about 16-18 towards brackish/salt. He eats almost every other day. I feed him krill.
He is in a tank with larger fish, and a tire track, they all went thru the salinity change no problems...
my tank is crystal clear, runnin fluval and is 65 gal. with some live plants and sand for him... tryin to make him REAL comfortable =)
definitely NOT a moray eel. You have a semi-aggressive tropical freshwater tank set up. Those fish in the background are blue gourami which are freshwater. There is no way a moray eel would survive in a freshwater tank and no way any other of those fish would survive in a saltwater tank. it is a nice setup for a freshwater though.
cool! what do they eat? im only allowed water animals and the eels were cool my mom said i could get one if i found out what they eat and their tank size and what fish they can live with
Technically there are NO such things as freshwater moray's. Its just convenient for people to keep them in freshwater. Most are saltwater and the so called freshwater moray's live in brackish water.
@SpinelessScales it is a moray eel its a brackish eel that he aclimated to freshwater just like any other moray they can live long periods of time in freshwater but it does shorten there live by alot
this "fish monster" is sick! i dont get why ppl want it as a pet! its really aggressive!!!! i see them every summer when i go spear hunting and they attack me all the time!
Because they are a cool animal to whach, this guy doesn't know how to take car of his because it's a brackish, not freshwater fish. Most of the species kept at home get under three feet, not the big ones that can harm divers.
The eel sold as a "freshwater moray" (gymnothorax tile) is really a brackish fish, so unless you can raise the salinity in your tank to a comfortable level, he won't thrive. We had to give our Tile his own tank, as he had stopped eating. They are usually born in freshwater but as they mature they move towards brackish or even seawater, so you can't keep them healthy in a freshwater tank for long.
As long as the other fish are much bigger, he won't eat them.
With other agressive fish like a knife and an oscar I dont think an eel would be a good idea. If you do get one, they seem to enjoy ghost shrimp and feeder fish
@klanana these little buggers are awesome, im suprised theyre so friendly because when i was little i saw one staring at me in an aquarium and that thing looked like it would kill you as soon as you went near it and now i know they only attack humans if they mistake one of your limbs as food. but not how you would expect. likt that guy that was feeding one hot dogs and he got his finger bit off lmao
no, it means why is it such a simple tank. They like caves and stuff not a tiny ass tank. My Fire Eel, Tire Track Eel, 2 Oscars. Alligator Gar, and Pleco have a 125gallon.
no. I recently sold most of my fish to a friend who has a 550gallon room divider tank(my god parents house). They payed me $500 for them all. All I have left is my Fire Eel , Alligator Gar, and I bought a Black Ghost Knife Fish. The Pleco is still here to.
For all of the aquatic impared who keep calling this a "fresh water" fish it is in fact brakish to salt. they should never EVER be put in fresh water as it can cause damage. I have one of these and it is doing well in about 1.018 salt lv. Please gets facts before actually buying one of these fish, it saves you money if you can't provide for it and the fishes life to go to a more responsable care taker.
all good and well but this is a 'brackish' water moray eel. It has nothing to do with Fire eels and tire track eels which aren't even true eels to begin with
Well Im not going to argue with you but there are fresh water eels, but i can;t say these are the type, Ive seen ones the size of me in lake ontario, they're fucking HUGE !
actually thats not entirely true they can be kept in freshwater as juvi but when they are older they need brackish i had mine for about 4 years now and thats what i did and hes happy and eating well
I'm not going to start something, because this is a stupid subject., Bottom line is if your going to get a fish put it in the right water requiements. Because even though they can 'live' in fresh water juviniles they become more vulnerable to sickness.
as KurNorock said, the "freshwater" snowflake eel is not a freshwater fish, though when young they can and do live in freshwater. as they mature they need higher levels of salinity.
Those are actually saltwater eels, but they can survive for quite a while in fresh water. I had one for 5 years before it finally refused to eat and starved to death.
I later found out however that my experience was a fluke. These eels rarely live longer than 6 months in fresh water. Though you can help them out a lot by adding a small amount of aquarium salt (it is good for freshwater fish too) to make them feel a little more at home.
Also, these eels are not designed to eat fish (though they do) their teeth are small pegs instead of spikes, meant for crushing shells. These are crustacean eaters. Feed them things like crabs, shrimp, etc. I used to give it crayfish (crawdads) until they became illegal to sell in my state.
I have never kept them but i have researched like too much about them so i know most of the general knowlage about them? African chiclid (sick-lid) can be in brackish water if you train it to. by that i mean over the next 2 months add a slight ammount of salt every few days. Google "Convert to brackish aquarium" it will tell you all you need to know about brackish water and how some hardy freshwater plants can survive with it. I will pm you about the eels
yes that is the best thing for african cichlids. but like oscars (south american cichlids) the african cichlids can live in fresh water but are never fully healthy.
I just got one! He is in my brackish water tank with a few cichlids. Hes seems comfortable! He shouldnt be kept in freshwater, he needs some salinity.
im worried hes not eating. What do you feed yours? Petstore guy said Krill. I have Bloodworms, Krill, Brine Shrimp, Tropical Flakes, Tropical Crisps, and feeder fish.
I've had mine 2 years in Freshwater hes about 2feet....the store labelled him as "Freshwater Snowflake Moray eel" he seems to be very happy in my tank.
No they don't do fresh water Moray Eel like somebody else have mentioned the one you got is a brackish-saltwater eel and will eventually die in fresh water I have been keeping marine and freshwater fish for the last 18 years I know what I'm talking about.
