truck drivers have got to know the basics. Going under bridges is always risky, you gotta know what you are driving. Think about the height. underpasses are no place for trucks, know your height, and then take the alternate route if you see a bridge that is too low.
You would think in this day and age they could make up a laser tripped overhead clearance warning system. If a truck was approaching the hazzard area and cut the beam of the laser, more warning lights would be activated. A truck taking a side road could ignore the extra warning.
I don't understand. Some of these box trucks have the height printed backwards on the body so u can read it through the rear mirror. Look once, think twice.
I've seen more than 1 truck drive under a clearly marked 11 foot 8 inch bridge and there tractor/trailer is at 13 foot 6 inches.....How dense can a driver be?
@Duckyistrippin Yeah I know, I work in a gas station they never read the dam things, one of those rigs took out light on our canopy. Completely crushed it. Hieght listed everywhere!
Cool a Ryder truck pulling a wheelie! if they had an over height span or warning device it might of stopped the dufus from wrecking the truck and possibly messing up the bridge, who cares if he had to back up a mile, beats wedging the truck under the bridge. I'd be embarrassed t do it but not as embarrassed as if I hit the freakin bridge
you would think they would close down the road to trucks that big...or at the town could make the road dip under the bridge a tad more....at least direct the big traffic around that area
Unfreaking believable! You would think that since this is an obvious major problem- 13 trucks in 13 months, that they would LOWER the roadway under that thing about a foot- ramp it down and up on each side.
Geez, Ive seen the DOT raise up traffic bridges over the freeway a foot when multiple repavings and road work built up the road under it too high.
The bridge wins again. If they had a lightweight span just ahead of the bridge that would alert the truck driver when it hit the top of the truck before it got to the bridge. This would save a lot of trouble. Of course this accident was the drivers fault. But my idea might have prevented it.
@ejcm55 ... an overheight beam is usually a good idea, but here it can't be done because overheight trucks have to be able to turn into the side streets.
@yovo68 In which case you set the crossbar higher than the roofline of any truck that wouldn't be a police escort requiring abnormal load, and have dangling, rubberised chains and/or a lightweight (vinyl?) sign (with rounded edges so it doesn't snatch) hanging down from it to about 11ft 6in off the deck...They'll make a noise along the rooftop of any overheight vehicle without damaging it (might mark it, but not damage) whilst allowing them to pass & turn off. Seen it done in enough other places
@yovo68 Classic case of a non CDL possessing idiot renting a truck clearly too big for him to handle. Either a Frieghtliner or International. Either way Penske Spec's these trucks with hydraulic brakes and registers them at the maximum legal weight of a standard license. As a truck driver we see this and many other dangerous manoeuvres by drivers like this, especially people and their Rv's who seem to think its the same as driving their car. Gov needs to close that loophole
@ejcm55 "A truck does not a trucker make." most of these are under 26.001lbs GVWR, so anyone with a class C could drive these. The words “Truck Driver” is use way loosely. Even someone driving a small pickup, calls themselves a truck driver.
The only thing not working is the brains of these drivers. They're plenty of warnings at that bridge. I can bet all they thought about was getting in and drive, who cares about the dimensions of the thing.
He smashed right into the low over pass sign with 2 blinking lights. some times when driving a truck it is a good idea to get out and look at things , like where you want to back into, also lok at where you are going into incase that you can't get out
Amazing no one gets out and sees if the driver's ok; especially the cab driver. Also, I hope there's a sign way before that bridge because by the time you've approached the bridge and see the sign, it's a little too late to try and stop a rig.
@corky7ca Well... they were all rental trucks that hit that bridge. That goes to show you that there's people out there driving a truck thinking that it's a car. Bwuahahaha!! I don't think that they check the height of the trailer before they take off..
Shouldn't they tell you when you rent the truck how high it is? I wouldn't have a clue if I rented a truck. Does it say somewhere on the paperwork? If not, it should.
@corky7ca when i rented the uhaul i read the manual they have its says in there. Also in my truck it had stickers on the dash very clearly stating the clearance required.
These rental trucks do not require anything more than being maybe 25 years old and having a car license. As a big truck driver I see many damaged vehicles of this type.
Having watched the videos on 11foot8.com, I'm shocked that they haven't fixed this. They could simply remove 2' of earth beneath the bridge, which I think would be a better solution that raising the bridge.
@mharrop396, you are 100% right but damn it is funny and if i was in one of those cars at the light and saw that i think i would have died from laphter haha
@nycworldsfair Could be the city/town doesn't want to spend the money. Seems if it happens often enough they would to keep that bridge from being damaged and possibly causing even bigger problems with it collapsing while being traversed. But it's typical of don't fix the problem until a real disaster like that.
@Nivicoman ... Norfolk Southern installed a crash beam right in front of the trestle to protect the structure. A 100-year-old sewer main runs a couple of feet below the road, so lowering the grade of the road is not a real option. The road has a 25-MpH speed limit and most truck drivers see the signs and turn onto the side street. Drivers of overheight trucks who are speeding on this stretch and/or who are inattentive occasionally pay the price for their mistake ...
@yovo68The city might have to upgrade the sewer main before it starts having leaks. That would be a chance for them to reroute it if possible and deepen the road bed. Obviously lowering the main would screw up the gradient. At the least they post the bridge height so they're coverered in that aspect but my thinking has always been to fix the problem rather than work arounds.
@Nivicoman ... the owner of the trestle, Norfolk Southern, installed a crash beam years ago to prevent damage to the trestle. So a major disaster is unlikely. The crashes are still a real hazard, but mostly to the inattentive driver himself. Of course if you follow too closely, or text while you drive, you might end up on one of these videos as an extra bonus ... see my website for more info about this canopener bridge.
