An inspiration to to those who have lost a loved one! The song was wriiten by Sir Harry Lauder in memory of his only son John (1891–1916), a captain in the 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, was killed in action on 28 December 1916 at Poiziers.

What a lot of folks don't know is that Sir Harry wrote this song as a tribute to his only son, who was killed in action during World War I. While the road of his son was tragically short, Sir Harry's was pretty long, as he died in 1950 at the age of 79. What was at the end of the road for Sir Harry? A reunion with the ones he'd loved and lost -- his wife (who died in 1927) and his son.
this is also at the begining of the more from the road 84 vhs of status quo, awesome little tune, they used it to promote there end of the road tour... wicked
I think this is a later version than 1926, I have just uploaded the 1926 version which is on a 12'' HMV record, the flip side is The Road To The Isles which was recorded in 1926. Nice clear recording though thanks for uploading.
