Sugar Ray was the best fighter I have ever seen - a pure boxing talent with lighting-quick reflexes and a magnificent ability to read an opponent. I don't remember seeing this bout when it happened (perhaps I never saw it before), but I wanted to check it out after watching the excellent flim, The Fighter. I have to give full credit to Dicky.  He was a talented boxer in his own right who fought Sugar Ray with skill and honor that night. Much love and respect to both men.

I've seen a lot of boxing matches, both in real life and on TV in my day. None were as entertaining as this one. Win or lose, Ekland was a tremendous competitor. To be able to go toe to toe to the distance with one of the best in the history of the sport (Leonard) and hold your own, says something of his spirit, stamina, and overall ability- all qualities of a champion. True, he was not the better fighter that day in the ring, but fighting your best is a win in my book. And he did it smiling.

The thing was called right. Dickey did a fine job frustrating the champ. Sugar Ray was on his way to be sure. He won this of course. I believe every round. But Dickey was a handful.

1st of all, the knock down clearly shows 3 things, 1st and 2nd happen together- as dickie connects a short right hand to leonard's jaw, leonard trips over dickie's leg. 3rd- leonard doesnt get right back up after he went down. he stayed down for a few seconds like he was dazed. it is what it is, and leonards face had that "i just got put down" look on it. i believe the trip helped an honest knock down. only eklund & leonard know what really happend. dickie says he knocked him down.

I just got finished watching the movie The Fighter, so I had to check this fight out for myself, Its clear that Eklund didn't knock down Sugar Ray, but I,ll admit Eklund had heart, no matter how many times he got knocked down he got right back up and got into the fight. The Fighter was a good movie, Christian Bale, Mark Walhberg , and the actress playing their mom did a good job portraying the real people.

The fact that he took his time and fought with caution gave him a more impressive outing but if he had engaged in a brawl or slug fest he would have been knocked out, Sugar dropped him 3 times when Dickie engaged him, imagine a more aggressive Eklund and a more aggressive Leonard! The fight ends in the 6 or 7th. Nuff Said!!!!
