  • Some of the most sublime music I've ever heard is in Wagner's Parsifal.

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful.... it brings a tear in my eye just listening to it.

  • @Dungbeetleproduction I hope you are feeling ok now. I think anyone who gets tears in their eyes listening to Wagner (even just the one tear) should stop listening to him for a wee while and perhaps just listen to songs by the Beatles; "I Am the Walrus" is a good one and lines like "Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come" should cheer you up. Wagner reaches parts of me most other composers are unable to reach but he never affects my eyes.

  • As Paul McCartney said its the music John ....this is an unashamed glorious piece of pomp and circumstance ..........in a world of total humbug and cant .......how refreshing

  • Reading Nietzsche while listening to Wagner is a destined thing.

  • @mikezephyr

Not completetely. Nietzsche admired Wagner, but when Richard composed "Parsifal", Friedrich rejected him, accusing him to "have kneeled down at the Cross' feet."

  • @dapontemozart1989 Don't forget, though, that Nietzsche considered Parsifal to be Wagner's greatest work, if only aesthetically. He said nothing but praise of the opera's music.

  • @mikezephyr I love Wagner's music but have never read Nietzsche. I'm a great fan of Snoopy.

  • hahaha! and that's how you write a zen koan, my friend.

  • @mikezephyr "zen koan." (:o( How is my comment like a zen koan?

  • in that it was a poetically funny piece that got me a sense of enlightenment by more or less mocking something usually reserved and serious.

  • @mikezephyr Snoopy is a very serious dog.

  • a real non sequitur that is supposed to mess up your everyday consciousness.

  • I don't listen to classical music often, but I find I like the "romantic" period composers best of all. Wagner is one of my favorites As far as politics and music go, I always give the artitst the benefit of the doubt. Most "great" artists in my mind, leave interpretatation to the beholder of the work, and know that if they achieve great fame, it will most likely be posthumously, because "rocking the boat" was not often permittted in their time.

  • Obama killed bin laden with 4 years of CIA servailance,I'd hope he hit the sweet spot after 4 years but that's just me

  • @Syzygy60 Yes, and this soundtrack would be perfect!

  • @Syzygy60 Please ...This has nothing to do with Wagner..I thought he was being discussed..Obama, Bin Laden..Wrong place for a political platform pal

  • I'm no hypocrit either I honor Wagner my way not theirs

  • Wagner put it all out there he's a hero,I hate hypocrits

  • i'm neither jew or german I am half finnish /scotch/irish,lucky 4 me we all drink

  • One Of the greatest classicals of all times........stupendous

  • I realy love thar Lord of the Rings music!

  • linda demaaaaaaaais.

  • don't worry I follow no fools or liars and Obama is at least one

  • @Syzygy60 If Obama has become a liar then this will probably be partly due to the type of political system he has to work under to be able to get anything done at all, however he is far from being a fool. You may hate his politics but this doesn't make him a fool. I think all politicians lie to some extent. You are putting very silly comments on here, most of which are ending up as spam and yet have the nerve to call someone else a fool. (:o(

  • is it any different today if I blindly follow an inexperienced leader younger and dumber than me?

  • Toujours aussi top

  • great great & beautiful.

  • The art piece is what is to be appreciated- not the political views of the artist. If Wagner ate babies on a daily basis and occasionally raped livestock, that wouldn't change the quality of his artwork.

  • @CabbageNappa very perceptive, even I loose sight of my own thoughts from time to time

  • @CabbageNappa I agree, but just think of how awe-inspiring his music would have been had he not been a total douchebag...

  • @yohannbiimu :Wagner was an obnoxious, arrogant prick but that has nothing to do with the majesty of his work. Some of the greatest artists and philosophers have been horrible people. We have to judge their work on its own merits.

  • Comment removed

  • @DrDeist Yeah, just look at Harlan Ellison.

  • Comment removed

  • @CabbageNappa Very true. A lot of people on YouTube seem unable to watch a Wagner video without feeling a need to mention Shitler. They have Shitler on the fucking brain.

  • PROUD TO BE EUROPEAN!!

  • @clarkmiles proud to be neutral and bland, good for you don't take a stand at least we know where you won't be,backing US

  • @clarkmiles Proud to be Northen European....

  • @DutchPetriot Wagner was an awful man, racist to say the least...( His Creed was that if you weren't German you were less than nothing). My father in Law (Who sadly died a few years back was also German and a truly lovely man) Loved Wagner's music if not his politics.. I can't listen to any Wagner without getting a bit sniffy. This is For you Albert, nontheless Tannhauser is beautiful and should be enjoyed

  • @MrSirDel Ow well, about the Wagner racist vs Nietzsche thing I only can say this: Wagner once said that all his best frends were jewish and Nietzsche once said that it would not be good for the german people if there came more jews. For the rest, nothing is perfect but Wagners overtures :)

  • is slavery

  • it's not a new fragrance

  • that's called submission

  • imagined the smell of burnt bodies do u believe at that point it would make a difference to u who's bodies as long as it's not u

  • My beloved passage from this overture is 5:19-5:29. Wagner is completly not my style of music at all, but this motive - I love.

  • Everyone's a critic.

  • @Luminar007 yes I suppose u r correct,we all are critics

  • Sir Georg Solti and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra concert version has MUCH more powerful horns. also, this version is incomplete. the true "concert version" is over 14 minutes long and finishes with an absolutely explosive orchestral version of the "pilgrims chorus"

  • University of London Symphony Orchestra are playing the overture this Sunday 13th February 2011, 7.30pm in St. John's, Smith Square. And raffling free tickets to two further concerts, including the Overture to Tristan und Isolde. Look for ULSO on facebook for more.

  • @Freddwith2D Great comment! Google translate is great!

  • @johnnywindows1 ...What do you mean ?

• Some people just enjoy drama and if there is no drama they create it. Go look at FB DRAMA!!!!

  • I don fucking care about Nazis, I care about MUSIC, and this music is FUCKING EPIC!!!!! >: )

  • One shouldn´t mix music with politically standpoints, only stupids do. Unfortunately Wagner was a terrible antisemite. Not the first - not the last.

Just listen to his wonderful music and shut up.

  • ludwigsgezote :)

  • Joy Bahr,now there's a Nazi

  • This is one Wagner set that Patrice Chereau can't ruin---its a CD cover. The music is conducted beautifully by American's greatest conductor our "Lenny"--from Boston.

  • NOBLE! ALL HAIL RICHARD WAGNER--WORLD'S GREATEST COMPOSER!!! ALL HAIL!!

  • who remembers seeing this in loony tunes with bugs bunny and elmer fudd

  • Iran means aryan Hitler suggested the name change I forget what Iran was called

  • @Syzygy60

    Persia is Iran's historical name

  • he stuck michelle's fat buffallo butt out the window lol

  • Even the worst person has some good inside of them. Wagner did good. Even the best person has a dark side...Leonard Bernstein was too much of a left wing collectivist.

  • this is a great performance, A real museum piece for the clasis music.

I love L.B. because his "On The Waterfront'" and his "West side Story"

    Real classics and Masterpieces.

  • All humans have a dark side, associating this music with Nazism is the same as comparing the Marseillaisse with Communism or like claiming freedom on this world while the only and furthest place mankind ever have gone is the Moon.

  • Likes and dislikes: Like: Wagner and Tannhauser. This was a beautiful opera, very inspired. The Overture is the theme for the Pilgrim's Chorus which is absolutely heavenly. I first heard this in high school and fell in love with Wagner's music and the Romantic Era music of the 19th century. Dislikes: Leonard Bernstein. Overrated, a ham, a show off, serving himself and not the music. Karajan was better! Dislike Charles the Prince of Wales. He was so evil to Princess Diana may she rest in peace

  • @AmericanEvita

How dare you speak about the future King like in that way.

  • @barbaricamus I'm American and don't really care for royalty. It's still universal fact and God's truth that Prince Charles married Diana while keeping an adulterous relationship with his girlfriend Camilla Parker Bowles. He may be a Prince, but that doesn't mean he can do whatever the "bloody hell" he wants. Adultery is very wrong not just in the moral sense but it's painful to the spouse who has been betrayed. Have you ever had a husband betray you with another ? I did and it still hurts

  • @AmericanEvita

You have my sympathies . But I would point out that such things as a particular person's failings hardly constitutes "God's truth", many live a life time and fail to fully appreciate that reality.

God bless the Prince of Wales!

  • @barbaricamus God bless Princess Diana. She was the best your country ever produced. The Prince of Whales should have treated his wife Diana better. He caused her so much grief. I don't think such a person is worthy of any title except "bad man".

  • @AmericanEvita Then your lack of judgement indicates that you had best concern yourself with American affairs and stay out of ours.

  • @AmericanEvita

The Prince of Whales huh? Do you mean Moby Dick?

  • Oops, ran out ot tape there.

  • magnifico!!!!!

  • too fast...

  • I met Avery Fisher Hall. He is actually a nice guy.

  • agree or be annialated by my minions!

  • this is best song ever written IMO

  • did u take a poll?

  • I don't

IMarx invented communism in 1866 just after the american civil war

  • decides,is perfect

  • no,is the director deides tempo

  • great

  • Not as good as Leibowitz :(

  • Vagner is inspiration for me because his music is dark. If he is today alive he would be some metalhead :D And his interests in race is inspiration for me. All in all, Vagner was great man

Magnifique, extraordinaire...Notre culture, notre musique, notre mythologie...

  • I guess that Wagner never met Hitler (the last was born after Wagners death). So could you please explain me why Wagner is connected with Hitler?

  • @688james A lot of Wagner's writings were anti-Semitic, and Hitler was inspired by Wagner in tons of ways.

  • @chimera15 well that happens when people mix politics with music. However, its the first time I hear that Wagner was anti-semitic.

  • @688james I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it had more to do with what Wagner, and Hitler saw as the degeneration of art, and music by largely Jewish influences at the time. In Hitler's time it was modernistic art produced by people in the Bauhaus and such. So it was more about art, the oncoming rush of "Modern" artist, which they hated, and since Hitler was primarily an artist it was that which influenced him to go against the Jews.

  • @688james It'd be kinda like if someone that was into anime decided today that the rap culture was degenerate, and decided to wipe out all the blacks to make anime the dominant art culture. lol

  • Surely Wagner was antisemetic? I 've never heard

  • Wagner was antisemetic and the greatist composer of all time. The ride of the valkaries is THE greatistist piece of music ever wrote.

  • What can we say about Wagner. His music is amazing. However, I am wondering why it is connected with Hitler!

  • Was Wagner really as racist and anti-Semitic as he is often accused of being?

  • @mpgingdl

    Wagner death:1886

    Hitler borned:1889

  • I blame the socialist mafia for all this rubbish about Wagner the anti-semitist. Something ALL people can enjoy is anathema to these trolls so they make up a smear to deflect from his great works.

  • you should watch the Bugs Bunny / Elmer Fudd cartoon "What's Opera, Doc?". It's hilarious and most of the score is by Wagner, including the song "Return My Love" which uses this as its tune. The cartoon is 7 minutes long, and absolutely worth every second of it.

  • @piligriming he?

    :)

  • a classic in every sense. magnificant.

  • awesome piece

  • simply majestic

  • This piece is magnificent - and according to the canons of rational discourse/logic, the statement stands independent of the author/speaker. Thus, regardless of Wagner's beliefs, this music will stand, beautiful, majestic, and passionate for the rest of human history.

  • why do these vids always end up a fucking racism debate, jesus fucking christ, can't you people stop obsessing???

  • @Colt2571 Because most people are much more interested in cultivating their own ignorance than enjoying music.

  • @Colt2571 No lest we forget

  • @Colt2571 "Jesus fucking Christ"? When? Where?

  • I don't like Jewish supremacy nowadays, but I love the art of Leonard Bernstein and the music of Mendelssohn. This piece of music is wonderful.
