Which chip do you think is "better" per say? With the speed of the game in virtua racing compared to how slow and clunky star fox feels, I wonder how a game like start fox would have ran on say the genesis with the SVP chip
@Standard420247 Yep Virtua Racing was much more impressive and faster than anything using the first gen SuperFX chip. The Super FX2 was impressive for pulling off Doom though.
@MN12BIRD This is a bit late response, apologies for that, but I don't think the snes version of doom considering the chip was impressive at all. I guess there can be no controversy or comparison though since sega never released a version 2 of their "fx chip" unless you consider the 32x version as it. In which case it was far more impressive. I say that because you said yourself in the VR vid that the chip was pretty much what they used in the 32X. That would mean the VR chip was better than fx2
@Standard420247 Well actually it was a rumor for a long time that the SVP chip and the processor in the 32X was similar but they actually are different plus remember there's not just one but two of the 32-bit processors in the 32X plus extra RAM and other things so it's really not a fair comparison. Plus most of the FX and SVP games have little to no textures at all. They're just plain polygons while Doom on the SNES has a lot of textures compared to Star Fox or Virtua Racing.
I remember first playing this game at a friends house i was like wow this is the future........Still play it now have you got hold of the star fox 2 complete rom it only works with ZSNES shame it never got released its a good game!!
No Pilotwings uses the Mode7 scaling and rotation features the SNES can do to a background layer. Its not really true 3D at least not like the polygon graphics of Starfox.
SNES or Genesis? I say both! The Genesis may be better for shooters, fighting, I dunno... the SNES for racing. The Genesis 6 button controller with arcade style layout (2 rows of 3, 6 face buttons) suits fighting games like SFII. The SNES controller with L and R buttons suits 3D games and racing games. There are great games on both. Its easier and usually cheaper to pick up a Genesis. Get a Genesis and gradually look for a deal on a cheap SNES too!
thanks! I think thats what I'll do. This saturday I;m getting my first ebay account because I'm sick of amazon's nonflexabilty so i'll be able to buy multiple items together. Thanks again!
If Lylat Wars is Star Fox 64 then no there is no FX chip! Its on N64 why would they put an FX chip in it? The N64 is much more powerful than the FX chip was and already had 3D processing. The SNES didn't.
Star Fox 2 was completely finished but it was cancelled because at the time, Super FX technology was outdated. So they toke the game and turned it into a N64 title, which later became Star Fox 64.

wow thats just sad. an snes game has almost the same graphics as an n64 game.darn those polygons

It's a bit of a stretch to say that Star Fox for the SNES looks like a great-looking N64 game like Rogue Squadron or any N64 game for that matter.
But considering the time Star Fox came out, it has great graphics.

im gonna forget buying a nintendo and a snes. after my birthday when i have money im gonna buy a FC twin a snes and a nes all in one
darktax 3 years ago
those things are great as they make it easy for you to play all the old games but I prefer the classic original hardware! Its nostalgic.
