The DS version's opening sequence is as identical to this as they come - only the backgrounds are 3D, the sprites are touched up, and there's more camerawork on the flight part with differently-translated dialogue, but the level of faithfulness to the original is astounding (and quite pleasant to see).

According to what I read about Dragon Quest VI every playable character has amnesia. They don't know who they are or where they came from.
