All 4 original sonic games had to to with the death egg.

In the original, the reason Sonic's friends were turned into robots were so they could build the Death Egg, wasnt till Sonic 2 this plan was revealed.

In Sonic 3, Sonic and Tails meet Knuckles but he was fooled by Robotnik to think they were after his Emeralds only to later to realize he was being used so that Robotnik can use the Master Emerald to power the Death Egg. Sonic used the power of the Super Emeralds to stop Robotnik in S&3K.

Sonic X is inconsistent with the naming issues. Though many are falsely led into believing Gerald is Dr. Robotnik that is far from the truth. Gerald Robotnik is simply referred to as Professor Gerald and not by the last name of Robotnik. The term Dr. Robotnik applies to his grandson Ivo Robotnik who is obviousely the main villain of the show,
