  • I assume you are looking at refilling the boiler without having to loose steam pressure.

This could be achieved but would need a reasonable amount of work. A check valve would need to be added to the boiler. This could be a simple device replacing the whistle and would be linked to the water tank on the trailer via a suitable hand operated pump.

  • The pump would need to be able to push the water into the boiler of around 20psi. Unfortunately I don't know of any off the shelf kit to fit the bill. Perhaps someone reading this might be able to help.

  • would it be possable to attach a water-top-up to a wilesco d405? from a water tank trailer?

  • these engines r just amazin, i was gobsmked wen i gt mine, how much did urs cost?

  • Bought new in December 2006 for £170 including delivery from Germany off eBay which turned out be an excellent buy.

  • The water pump for filling the boiler when in steam.

A Wilesco valve can easily added to the D10.

Steam info can be found at yahoo group 'toy_steam'

  • nice steamer. what is that little plunger next to the pistent? i have a D-10, and was wondering if it possible to put a throtel valve on it.

  • Got myself a D21. Beautiful machine, runs very smoothly. And not to forget the beautiful color combination.

  • Nice Video. is that engine good ?

  • what do u use to compress the air in the boiler i have one exactly the same and i would like to run it off air.

  • Either a large aquarium pump of a garden pond air pump. These can be run in the home without making lots of noise and can be connected to the engines via silicone tube connected to the blow down valve. Remember, when running on air the cylinder does not need expensive steam oil. In fact, if the oil is too thick you will need a fair pressure to get it to run.

  • Faultless, tasteful display, Peter.

I greatly appreciate the scale speed running.

I've my first Wilesco (and it's my first engine, btw) on order, a D455.

But if I should get another--I think this is the one I'd most like. Do you recommend the D21?

Any weak points to mention? Thanks

  • The D455 is part of my own collection and I'm sure you will be pleased with it. Just remember to keep everything lubricated and not just the cylinder.

My D21 runs faultlessly. I run it both on steam and compressed air. If I am busy doing something else I will leave it running on air all day.

  • Thanks for that, Peter. I come from a mechanical background too, cars, clocks, watches, etc, so I am with you on your mechanical taste and insights.

I did get yesterday a first toy accessory: the Wilesco color combination wheel. It's seen at my video #6.

  • Hi, nice machine!

Wilesco's most beautiful and the one with the biggest cylinder and biggest flywheel.

Do you run it on air or solid fuel?

And does the paintjob have any problems with fuel?

  • Sometimes compressed air & sometimes Esbit fuel. Has had no problems with the paint being damaged by the fire.

  • could we have a film of the pump working please?

  • It's a bit boring as you simply push the lever up and down and the water level rises. Not really a lot to see. However I will see what I can do when I get time.

  • awesome, I just wanted to see how effective it is as I want one of these so I can modify it to have a spirit burner you can top up for unlimited steaming!

  • Hi Matthew. Sorry for the delay. I've been too busy to keep up on hobbies.

The pump is very efficient and would allow you to keep the engine is steam for as lon as you wanted.

  • awesome thanks Peter I shall have to see if I can find one!

  • that is cool but could you go over features of it

  • The boiler is 165mm long x 65mm diameter and is fired by Esbit solid fuel. The steam engine has a double acting piston valve cylinder with a stroke of 16mm and a diameter of 13mm. Lubrication is via a simple in-line oiling point. There is a hand operated waterpump fitted which allows the boiler to be filled without having to stop the engine.
