Probably something to do with personalities rather than accepted protocol/CoC.
Kira Nerys has a habit of taking control of a situation and "getting things done" when needed. Worf, on the other hand, tends to fare better when He has a leader to follow. Otherwise, his Klingon instinct for a heroic death in battle becomes a problem (all IMHO of course).
Worf SHOULD have been in command. Kira got there 1st. Worf's too busy blowing shit up to question it. ;-)
Anyone notice when the Defiant is attacking the asteroid....it has an "NCC" marking on the nose.....NCC 74210.....the Defiant was a prototype, and her registry was NX-74205. Guessing it was a hiccup by the production crew :)
@Dippers85 The original defiant was destroyed. The second defiant was a production model originally named the Sao Paulo. The NCC designation is correct.
@eXcommunicate1979 they would have never done it, the series finale was just re-cut CGI from old episodes............ argargarg .......................
Can anyone tell me WHY on DS9 there are no shield effects on the battles done on all over the show and on TNG and Voyager shields exist...and why every ship except the Defiant isn 't Destroyed when hit by those plattforms??? I mean realy....The Ship whith the main characters is ok but scr.....w all the rest??? I mean come ooooon.....Those weapon plattforms against the Borg...Piece of Cake!!!
I always wondered if I'd ever see a scenario where the shield generating an invincible barrier is actually protecting the generator itself in addition to something elsewhere. I guess it had to happen eventually.
4:40, wow deflector arrays can do almost about anything. Open entrances into fluidic space, simulate photon torpedo blasts, strengthen shields. I say why build a defiant class ships when you can just build a ship surrounded by deflectors.
How sad a bunch of powered down weapon platforms could take more punishment than starships. As good as DS9 was, they really screwed the pooch when it came to space battles. Single torpedo shots could split a ship in two.
Those platforms were heavily armored. No life support, no places for lifeforms. So the platforms can take much more punishment plus no power generator meant the platforms were far more resistant to damage. Power generator takes damage it goes boom.
The dominion had weapons that could easly penetrate convential shielding of the time. Even though they eventually they gain shielding resistant to there weapons, it might also be so that some ships would be incompatable or didn't have the time to be upgraded.
I also remember from a episode that indicates that the federation fighters don't even have shields, only a deflector.
Regarding shields, it's amazing how fans can justify and rationalize an obvious goof by the director. The extra cost argument is absurd - all the ships, with various weapons effects, are in the computer. It's just a matter of scripting and telling the computer to render the scene a certain way. If the programmer were clever, they could add a shield variable to each ship, decrement it by a semi-random amount each time it was hit, and render the appropriate flare when the shield is active.
@geonerd CGI was not always used during DS9 or voyager. Believe it or not, they used to use actual physical models. CGI was a LOT more expensive in the 90's then it is now. Now you can do effects shots like they did then in star trek bridge commander.
@MrDavy78 They don't need to be blown up. Most of the crew is located in the "head" of the ship. Inflict severe damage on that and you don't need to destroy the rest of the ship.
I liked this episode when I saw it, must be a decade ago. Looking back I wonder why they fly right into the defensive platforms, meaning the ships could be outflank. They should have destroyed the outer ones from maximum range, then slowly move in. They can alternate ships so damaged ones can repair shields etc. If necessary they can have the back ship extend its shield over the front ship. Its slow and methodical, but if the platforms activate, they won't be surrounded.
@mrfriendlyguy Because that method would take time, time in which the Dominion could have brought in reinforcements. Imagine what would have happened if they had been caught between Dominion reinforcements and the defense grid.
@Emanusmell Certainly not, mate. The Enterprise - D was already destroyed at that stardate. At that time, Picard was commanding the Enterprise - E, Sovereign-Class.
@lebukottgyerek Yes! And the Soverign Class is comissioned by this time. Why they don't send She? It's the more advanced Starship in the Fleet, words of LT. La forge in Star Trek First Contact.

If all the ships had shields, the battle would be VERY long.
But more importantly, the show didnt have the budget to add shield FX.
In TNG or Voyager, they only have to add special effects for one ship...in Ds9, the fleet battles are too big and it would be too costly to add special effects to every single ship each time their is a huge fleet battle.
@FederationStarfleet thats true but the im perplexed as to why the writers didn't make the dominion have technology that can disable shields on everything except ships that weren't theirs care to explain?
@Mrspikeprime yeah, but really you didn't see much of the battle of wolf 359. don't get me wrong that is quite shocking, but really this is far more brutal i think
I see what you mean about best of both worlds, when we didn't get to see the battle there, but when Emmissary came around and we saw exactly how it happened, that's really the first time we saw an entire fleet get the crap beaten out of them with no real difficulty.
@FederationStarfleet also remember that they are facing the dominion. New weapons, new tech. The way the shields work is to change their signal to be the opposite of the incoming weapons. If you have no data available for said weapons then the shields wouldn't even phase em.....or something like that thought crosses my mind
@crazycabose One of the theories but forth is that so much power is being utilized for the weapon systems (wasted shots that miss their target and such), impulse drives (increased maneuverability) and structural integrity fields (to compensate for the insane maneuvers they have to perform to evade enemy fire) that there is little left over for reinforcing the shields so they collapse with one or two hits.
@Fbueller129 honestly...i think they eliminated the "sheilds getting hit" effect cause showing the weapons hitting the ships themselves just looks so much more dramatic, exciting, and dangereous. the smalle ships get blown away in one or two shots cause they just cant absorb the impact of the large weapons the big ships have, but really, i just think its done this way cause it looks cool. not some weird explanation of "not enough power" or whatever some people keepo saying. just my thoughts
@Fbueller129 Another theory was that shields were unable to be used due to the close proximity to so many other ships. If you look at the shield around a Galaxy class on it's own for example it is huge. Put 500 other ships around that and some with their own shields active are bound to clash.
