When given the right role and the right director (see Riot in Cell Block 11, Birdman of Alcatraz), Brand was as good as it gets. I am currently researching his life.
If you read any articles on acting, one of the things always mentioned is the evolution of the character. In this movie, Brand went from a prick to fairly compassionate at the end of the movie. When Scott Wilson is carrying Stacy Keach down the steps, Brand says "Oh my God" with the compassion of a man who realizes that he may have misjudged Keach's character. IMO this was one of Brand's best, if not his best, performance on film. He was one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood.
I agree with you big-time barztool, Brand was awesome in this movie. He always had that face that you could strike a match off of. Great friggin actor. Great acting by Keach and Wilson too. Very powerful movie, perhaps my favorite ever, in fact.
Neville Brand wasn't the second-most decorated soldier of WWII. He stated in the book "Bad at the Bijou" that he was probably eighth. He said that someone in Hollywood started that rumor, and he figured that if he disputed it people would assume he was being modest. I first saw this movie when i was in the Navy, probably around 1985. The main reason I rented it was because of Brand, who was always one of my favorite actors. I thought he did a terrific job in this movie.
