  • Lol...Too funny! And oh so true :) Thank You :) xo

  • Im from northern ontario, I have to go to Hamilton every 3 or so months for doctors appointments. I dread going down south between october, and April.

  • Thank you, Rick

  • rick was real ass lame in this one

  • A tip to all you drivers of slush-o-matic transmission-equipped cars: shift into neutral when you approach a stop--it puts far less strain on the traction of the wheels.

And on the topic of traction, you have to stop and think about it: the only thing connecting your 3000-pound car to the road is 4 patches of rubber. If those 4 patches have inadequate traction, you lose a lot of car control and you endanger the lives of yourself, your occupants, and other road-users. Get winter tires.

  • last year, I remember seeing some rich snob in a Lexus going down the street sideways...literally

  • Snow tires have deeper treads so are better in the snow for attaining traction to drive. The problem is that there is less rubber on the road with them and they don't stop as well on clear asphalt. Still I agree that when snow comes, slow down and practice your stopping and skid control before you need to do it for real. Power poles, guardrails and other stationary vehicles tend to jump out in front of moving cars when the snow starts to fly.....!

  • Torantarted

  • Sorry Rick, I disagree with you on this one. Snow tires give more tread but it's very minimal. It's just a marketing ploy to attain more capital. If you're a safe and smart driver, you can use all-seasons. THEY'RE CALLED ALL SEASON TIRES!!!

I think rather than blaming it on the tires, blame it on the driver.

  • @scotto132 You are a moron! My father is a paramedic and almost every call he has to go to is a driver without winter tires on, guess what they have? ALL SEASON! These tires arent just marketed to Canada you know, they also sell those same tires to the United States. The states generally has less snow than Canada does and so All season is good there. If youre so cocky to think that you dont need winters then go ahead. Im assuming that you drive so when you crash it is your own fault.

  • @k3vinheyland Good for your dad. Yes, it IS the driver's fault if they get into an accident if they can't prevent it themselves. You're driving a huge hunk of metal, rubber, and other fixtures. Drivers have a responsibility. My point was that a stupid driver can't just put on winter tires and be fine. No. It's more than that, so before you claim to know it all. Get the facts straight. The reason they're called All-Seasons is because they're good for all seasons!!!!! It's a marketing ploy.

  • @k3vinheyland Unless you're living in Yellowknife or Churchill, you really don't need "winter tires". Even then, it's about being a smart and safe driver. Slow down, take your time, and if you don't have ABS, pump those brakes. Not everything has to be rushed. That's the problem with most drivers today. Doesn't matter what tires they have. Everyone is in a rush, and they're not willing to take that extra five minutes to drive safely.

  • @scotto132 Do some research into how all season rubber compounds lose grip below 4C. A modern winter tire is designed to avoid this problem and remains softer and sticky down to a much lower temperature. Regardless of the road conditions (even dry!), winter tires will always grip better on a cold surface than all season tires, thus improving your ability to steer and stop. If you're as smart and safe as you think you are, why do you choose NOT to make your car as safe as possible!

  • @MrWildECoyote1 I gotta put them on the Pontiac this Thursday and on the Impreza on Friday. Fresh winter rubber for both cars... expensive but worth it.

  • @MadaraPeinNaruto lol What does that have anything to do with driving in the winter? XD I live in Calgary btw, not so flat. :/

  • The ending line was fantastic!

  • I will always think of driving as sex now LOL

  • ...I love the way rick says "car."

I know he's gay but damn, I'd do him.

  • this one sucks

  • Nobody needs winter tires. They need to learn how to not drive like an idiot! Winter driving courses should be mandatory for this nation, NOT winter tires.

  • @ComedyNurd totally agreed, i live in Toronto its a joke on how many bad drivers are here. one can understand if its black ice or a snowstorm cant see etc... but 5 cm, people don't know how to adjust to the snow right away. i try and stay off the road the first few snowfalls its crazy out their.

  • Some people seem to be proud of the fact that they don't "need" winter tires. Their solution is to drive really slow and block traffic for everyone else.

  • Rick always has the best way of telling like it is!!!!!

  • Alternative ending: If your going to take it for a spin, make sure you got the right rubber on.

  • Colin. Is this you?

  • i LMAO when he ranted about the num nuts who ran into a pole and wanted a witness. if thats the way Toronto citizen are i would be hated so much for me telling them how stupid they are

  • @phrozenstare This is probably one of the dumbest statements I have ever read, unless you go around telling everyone in Toronto that they are stupid no one will think that way. Also I don't believe you have the balls to tell a single person to their face they are stupid.

  • we have a smartbored in our classroom at school, and like 2 or 3 times a week we watch rick mercer reports its sooo much fun.

  • @hmsdtbarbieluver13

Perhaps your teacher should focus more on grammar and spelling; less on Rick Mercer.

  • @mgarforth hahah we do grammer after but my teacher is soo fun

  • It's like every year people have to re-learn how to drive in the snow. They think that they are "better drivers" if they act like the snow has no affect on them. Especially people who All Wheel Drive. They think it's a license to ignore the drving conditions. It's called physics..... wake up people!!!

Thank you Rick Mercer. Once again you are the voice of reason in a sea of absurdity.

  • @scoobydo smart

  • Rick is he man!!

  • after what I've seen this morning in the city of Toronto (Wednesday January 12, 2011) I'd be tempted to go even further - this isn't just a can't drive province; it's also a doesn't-know-how-to-remove-the-snow province

  • Long Island is just as bad. First sign of snow, we go INSANE.

  • he got it right with all seasons. the problem isn't the tread design its the rubber compound used. all seasons get to hard at colder temps to grip where the softer rubber of a winter tire still sticks. its why winter tires wear out faster in the summer.

  • @123456789mischief All of that is true in central and Eastern Canada, but once you hit -30° and colder temperatures in the Prairies, winter tires also freeze up, and do nothing.

  • @ComedyNurd never knew - 30 was the p[oint the winter rubber became hard. where did you get this information from?funny thing is as I read this we are just coming off a - 30 cold snap in BC.

again the best way to deal with winter road conditions is your right foot. don't push so hard with it.

  • WTF is a crr? or a bumper crr?

  • WTF is a crr?

  • I laugh at fellow Canadians who don't learn that when snow falls ....you can't be driving like its July......come on people....wet, slushy, snowy, icey....means SLOW THE HELL DOWN!!! Get to a empty parking lot and test you traction and get used to sliding again! It helps. Give yourself plenty of time to brake, nice slow and easy.

  • @Ranma1981 ya really people seem to so forget that little point

  • @Ranma1981 if you think thats bad, you should see the Americans. No joke, they're really bad, especially people from Texas

  • @Ranma1981 I drive the same in the winter with snow and ice, the same as in the summer, it may help that im in a bmw but still, if you`re actually a skilled driver you can drive the same speeds in all weather conditions, I don`t need a scared horrible driver going 40 km in a 70 in front of me just because they can`t control their vehicle.

  • @BostonCreamDonut well remember not everyone is privileged as you and has BMWs lol...one of my biggest pet peeves with this is when a big ass truck is up my ass when i'm driving slow in my little kia thinking 'hello buddy? you see i'm in this little car!' people are simply in too much of a damn rush these days anyway...regardless of how good your car is, just ask is it worth it to risk your life and/or others for getting to your destination 10 mins early...easy now huh?

  • @BostonCreamDonut Yup, and when you rear end someone like me with a kid in the back seat and they get out a tear you apart, I bet your "great driving" is going to do you a whole lot of good. I drive carefully in the winter because my children's lives are worth more then getting someone a few minutes earlier.

  • BAHAHA

It's funny seeing Quebecers and Ontarians arguing about who has the worst crashes in winter...

I need not remind you fine gentlemen that here in Vancouver, we have horrendous crashes and terrible drivers during the summer.

We don't even have snow and people crash in the best of driving conditions. The moment we have 1cm of puff on the road, your drive back home takes 3 hours because of traffic...

  • first day of snow im grabbing a six pack and a lawn chair, and im going to head to the biggest hill in my town.

  • You know what's sad, we know it's coming where I live. Snow starts to stay about October 29 till November 2. But we get a couple accidents a day for the first couple weeks, after the snow fall. It comes at Halloween and leaves on May long weekend. And yet, every year it's the same thing. We get like 6 inches, it warms up and slushes up under that, freezes and we have ice for another six months. You'd think a hundred years of that happening would clue a few people in.

  • OMG sex and driving... what a random and hilarious analogy :)

  • I should post this somewhere in which my fair city of Portland, OR can see it and get the point about driving in snow. We do the occasional big snowstorm....of 6 inches (or about 15 cm) and drive this city to a complete halt. I know it does not sound very much, but believe me - when it happens, it is truly a spectacle.

  • He thinks Toronto is bad has he ever been to Edmonton in the winter there was 8 cars in the ditch on the whitemud with a centimeter or less snow on the ground almost no one in Edmonton can drive in the summer let alone the winter

  • luv u rick mercer

  • WOW.............and ditto bought my first set of snowtires With Studs up in Thunder Bay short note F-in Bester choice l have made

  • OMG So true!! Buy f'ing winter/snow tires people...or be prepared to pay for the body work :P

  • cool vid keep it up

  • Is that how you guys pronounce Audi over there? I wasn't sure what he was talking about for a minute.

  • @irononreverse Depends who says it.

  • The Germans?

  • @irononreverse Depends on who you are, who you're talking with, and their familiarity with European cars. I'd pronounce it ow-dee, but a lot of us east coasters say aw-dee.

  • did the pole jump out and go in front of him lol

  • Quebec mandated winter tires on all 4 wheels during winter, which in my opinion is a good call. I heard that in one of the scandinavian countries, they mandate studded winter tires, because they did the cost analysis of fixing the roads or paying out insurance, turns out having to fix the roads more often is cheaper than paying out to accident victims.

  • That doesn't mean it will be cheaper in Canada to fix the roads as opposed to paying out insurance. Canada has a lot more roads to fix than Scandinavia does.

  • Never said it would be. However i do beleive that snow tires are considerably safer in the winter conditions we get around here.

  • SERIOUSLY. Lrn2winter tires, doucebags.

  • 0:55-1:04 describes all rich idiots driving in winter.

  • lawl

  • 1:37 to 1:46 is so true! haha, nice one Rick!

  • Yeah

  • Rick Mercer is the man!!! He tells it like it is and he's correct regarding the winter tires. I am a firm believer in them. I have 4 winter tires on my car around the end of October or early November. They give you more grip, control and help you stop a little sooner. Ontario should make winter tires mandatory. Good job Rick!!!

  • Christ I have chains and sand bags stashed in my truck for emergencies.

  • @silverboyzzz lol here in Quebec accident were so bad that they jumped on the opportunity of mandatory winter tires

  • @stefrockets Quebec was very smart in making them mandatory. Look at it this way, less accidents, property damage, injuries, better control of the vehicle and the government gets more tax money (people don't like that part). I WISH ONTARIO WOULD FOLLOW QUEBEC'S LEAD ON WINTER TIRES...

  • @silverboyzzz ya but thats the only thing that quebec got right

  • @silverboyzzz ya gr8 more that the the qc gouv't could to spend on useless crap

  • @silverboyzzz From what I know from a bit of car racing and mechanic experience, it is even worst/better than "that". If it was not from the popular use of the name, I think the term four season tire will be open to lawsuit for miss-representation. I think that different type of tires are made for different use within a tolerance and... Well, you can't do a tire that really work great everywhere, all the time.

  • @therrydicule Tire makers should make it very clear that "all-season" tires are really only acceptable for Spring, Summer and Fall and that they are not suitable for winter. A tire that is capable of handling all road conditions is impossible. The term "all-season tire' mis-represents the tire, I was fooled at one time thinking they were fine for winter until I slid right into an intersection a few years ago and have been using winter tires ever since.

  • @silverboyzzz Well, from my experience it is very clear that nobody should use them during the winter in Canada (except in Vancouver, BC)... And, if the economic consideration authorize it (I get the place in the garage, I got the money for it, I got the time to change them). I would not use them during the summer because summer tire have better "performance"). However, I will use 4 season tire in sprint and fall because... Well, the weather change a lot during these two seasons.

  • @therrydicule I'm fortunate enough to be able to store our tire in the basement on stands, I do have the time to swap the tires and I budget for winter tires when it comes to maintenance. Nothing is more important than safety IMO.

  • @silverboyzzz Then you obviously have no idea why winter tires were engineered. Unless your vehicle is a 4 wheel drive, you should never have more than 2 winter tires on it at one time. They were never designed to help stop sooner on ice, they were designed to help prevent people from getting stuck. For Ontario, yes, winter tires are a great idea. As for the prairies, for example, they should be banned, as they have absolutely no use.

  • @ComedyNurd Using only 2 winter tires and 2 other tires is more dangerous than using 4 all-seasons. Winter tires are designed to remain more flexible and to grip ice and snow. Hell, you don't even need ice and snow. Just temperatures of 7 degrees or under. Where do you get your "facts" from?

  • @silverboyzzz BTW, using 2 winters and 2 all-seasons, the car will lose control. Same thing as wearing a sandal on one foot and running shoes on the other. Moving slowly you're fine, start running and you're off balance. Try to stop quickly and you are likely going to slip. 4 winter tires people.

  • For all of his rants, does he walk around the same block every time?

  • I think he ranted around the same few blocks this past season. I recognize the same buildings even though the "art" seems to change from episode to episode.

I'd hate to be him trying to film a rant and have random people on the street harass him, so maybe that area's cut off for a short time while they film.

  • Kewlios

  • "use protection" yeah, or just common sense, slow acceleration, slow for corners, fast for steep ice covered hills, brake slowly from a long distance, or if you do have to slam on the brakes, pump them. I live in a northern area of canada and I've never taken the ditch and never gotten into an accident because of "bad road conditions".

  • good job, you should teach torontonians how to drive...and americans lol

  • I saw this episode last week like 3 times XD Rick's HILARIOUS

  • he is the funniest Canadian without a doubt

  • AHAHAHAHAHA!!! Abso-freakin'-lutely brilliant!

  • SO TRUE!!!
