It was due to the efforts of Capcom USA to "label" their mixed style of muay thai, karate and jiu jistu simply shoto which is in fact completely false. same with the name change of "Gouki" to "Akuma" it was assumed by Capcom USA that Gouki doesnt sound "badass" enough for the western hemissphere
@neverminder666 btw there are in fact two sotokan karate practitioners in the Street Fighter universe. the first one is Retsu from Street Fighter 1 and Makoto from Street Fighter 3 and Super Street Fighter IV
in the end it is absolutely trivial which character uses what kind of style. There is simply no fighting style where u learn to spit "Yoga Flames" or jump 6ft. high to do a cross up o.O

Ryu's style and philosophy was influenced by Mas Oyama, who also influenced Takuma much later, just as Adon and Sagat were inspired by the Thais who were the only ones (from the muay tai school) who challenged Mas' karate school at that time.
Poongko is the type who just f*cks up players with tactics from amateur level to pro level. The problem with pro level sometimes is that they think respectfully, meaning they think their opponents wouldn't do risky moves just because. Proof: there's many videos out there of pros losing to amateurs, Excellent adventures is one of them.
The EX axe kick is such a great move too. I love cancelling medium crouching kick into EX Axe Kick, long range low poke into long range overhead. It's tough to defend against.
@SuperBrainzilla I used to wonder the same thing. Good Makoto players are extremely rare. However, the same cannot be said when it comes to these....."good"....hadouken characters. You can find HUNDREDS of them. Shows how easy they are to use. But, V-Ryu is very talented with Makoto.

If he is 1 of the original characters, then maybe Capcom can be accused of trying to exploiting Bruce Lee's fame to sell the game. By the time of Fei Long's addition, SF2 was already a success. SF could do without Fei Long and still be successful, therefore, I don't think Capcom need to pay royalties.

Guessing right is a huge part of being great at this game. It's taking what is going on around you, calculating the odds and going with what should get you the most reward. Poongo knew he was running out of life and that Fei Long would probably be looking to keep the pressure on because he only needed maybe one more hit to win.
Once he saw that FADC to make the flame kick safe, the odds that more quick attacks would be coming to keep the pressure on was high. He guessed right.
@CanadaMMA I agree with what your saying 100%, but my original comment was "it's not a good comeback" I stand by that. A good comeback to me is picking an opponent apart with aggressive play from a life deflect. Not hitting Ultra at a juncture in a pressure string on the hope that the guy pressed a button. The Fei player got sloppy, poongko took advantage - thats it. If he'd FADC'd, or AA, or some other form of Ultra comeback then yes, it's a great comeback.

@LuigioSMBZ i totally understand, im not part of the DDR crew [Daigo Dick Riders] that seem to be out there. he's been on top for a long time and he's one of the best but there is alot competition coming out there now. i mean look at Fuudo and Latif and Poongko. those 3 were not very well know before Evo and they blew it up this year. im so hype for Evo 2012, next year will be amazing with all the new games coming out. theres going to be so much to see next year and so many new faces
@DoctorDraggy Not really... the guy playing as Fei Long had the match won but neglected to pull of the Rekkashingeki at the end... it may well have won it for him.
@S3fR0 Evil Ryu isn't low tier, he has low stamina yes but he has a lot of damage and good combo potential with a lot fo linsk to his ultra and a long range focus attack. Plus despite having slower fireballs than most of the cast the startup and recovery on them is faster so he is a little safer for spacing. He also has very similar approaches to the other shoto's. Think of him as Akuma without the air hadoken and having most of Ryu's normals but much better. I think people underestimate him.
@TheBoredomOtaku Hes also getting: a faster sweep, 50 more health, better anti airs, more options to land combos after axe kicks and his target combo and some other stuff. I cant wait for his buffs.
@S3fR0 No, the game runs at 60 frames per second so the more frames a move requires to come out, recover etc determines how fast it is so 6 frames out of 60 is faster than 7 frames per second.

@Longshot3181 I was going to mention it but more as a perfect on a Yun player. With all the incredible talent coming from 4 I feel like Daigo's losing his spot at the top. I mean obviously he's a phenomenal player but I feel his time has come to pass to make way for new players

@LuigioSMBZ i totally understand, im not part of the DDR crew [Daigo Dick Riders] that seem to be out there. he's been on top for a long time and he's one of the best but there is alot competition coming out there now. i mean look at Fuudo and Latif and Poongko. those 3 were not very well know before Evo and they blew it up this year. im so hype for Evo 2012, next year will be amazing with all the new games coming out. theres going to be so much to see next year and so many new faces

@S3fR0 Evil Ryu isn't low tier, he has low stamina yes but he has a lot of damage and good combo potential with a lot fo linsk to his ultra and a long range focus attack. Plus despite having slower fireballs than most of the cast the startup and recovery on them is faster so he is a little safer for spacing. He also has very similar approaches to the other shoto's. Think of him as Akuma without the air hadoken and having most of Ryu's normals but much better. I think people underestimate him.

@TheBoredomOtaku Hes also getting: a faster sweep, 50 more health, better anti airs, more options to land combos after axe kicks and his target combo and some other stuff. I cant wait for his buffs.

@S3fR0 Actually his sweep is getting slower by 1 frame and a few weakened normals but yeah his buffs seem pretty decent.

@S3fR0 No, the game runs at 60 frames per second so the more frames a move requires to come out, recover etc determines how fast it is so 6 frames out of 60 is faster than 7 frames per second.
