I'm of two minds about this. I think it's best to work on stuff that is most likely to come up in real situations, but stuff that can help our bodies and brains accept and perform things that we're not used to can help broaden our capability to do new things in general. I doubt I'd ever play these exact patterns on a gig, but being able to play them could help my ability to play other stuff...
@FunWithFlipCam .it may not have a song application directly(the parididdles on bass drum) but it could be good to coordinate your feet with each other if you aren't used to playing double bass.you may not use the actual rhythms or foot patterns but it would and could develop your feet to play together.
@FunWithFlipCam you obviously have no clue about drums...everything you practice will make you better and i guarantee that you can do neither of these techniques he's just shown. if you can get your paradiddles really fast it sounds awesome in a solo.
@maciverandy Yes, I have no clue. I play for a living (did 208 shows last year) and have for 25 years. Drum solos arent my thing-solid, musical drumming is. I have said that this excecise if fine for those into this sort of thing, but it has no practical MUSICAL appllication-unless you are playing wanker fusion music to impress other musicians.
@FunWithFlipCam Why would it be useless to you? If the ONLY thing that you have in your arsenal is musicality, you won't make it very far. Practicing these sorts of exercises expands your musical repertoire so that you can be MORE musical. This exercise shouldn't be useless to ANYONE.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX You are welcome to your opinion, and I, mine. I play for a living-no day job-and am an-demand player for both sessions and live work. My methods work for me-you want to employ this, be my guest; it's a free world. My 'arsenal' includes chops for rock, blues, country, reggae, r+b and more-this is why I get work. Not cause I can wank on paradiddles. All the best, mate.
@FunWithFlipCam Ughh, now you are just acting derogatory. Again, I understand that you have a musical style of playing. USE THIS EXERCISE IN THAT FAVOR! This exercise won't just make you "wank on paradiddles". It will increase your independence and your musicality. No reason to be so arrogant.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX Wow, you really seem to be obsessed with replying to me! I am neither arrogant nor derogatory. I just dont agree with you. And you cant seem to handle that.
I have been more than polite with you. You have your opinion and I have mine; clearly we dont agree, so stop trying to convince me. I have wished you the best and continue to do so. So move on...unless, of course you insist on having the last word, which Im sure you will.
@FunWithFlipCam sure you did 208 shows...if you think training with paradiddles is garbage wanker fusion then we better have you write all the new drum lesson books because you obviously know more about them then anyone else...also, why don't you put up a video of you playing this technique(cuz you can't). oh yeah, mcdonalds and the usa rule!!!
@maciverandy Wow, you guys really take this stuff personally, dont you? I will say it one last time...try and get it right; this isnt right...FOR ME. You like it? Go nuts. Ok? I am not knocking Simon, or any of you that want to sit and do this-knock yourself out. I feel it is completely uneccessary. FOR ME. Get it, yet? And yes, I did 208 shows last year. I have 4 nightly house-gigs a week, and free lance on weekends. With a variety of bands and music types.
@FunWithFlipCam i always practice my paradiddles on my double bass and my snare...i guarantee you can't paradiddle or drum as well as i can. whats the name of that band u are in?
@maciverandy Sigh...you dont give up, do you? Enjoy 'beating' me at paradiddles-awesome for you. I am too busy making music to worry. p.s. At what point did this become personal for you? I havent attacked you on any level, other than responding to your immature comments. Why is it so important to you to be 'right'? You enjoy this exercise and it works for you? Awesome. In the real world of a working drummer, it doesnt count for much. So-enjoy. Ive wasted enough time on you.
Not only a great drummer, but a super nice guy too - met him after a Toto show in Ontario, Canada - total class act.

Simon is an amazing drummer, but this is useless crap. Its like algebra for drumming.

@FunWithFlipCam By this I mean, you will never find a practical application for it in a song. Great work out for your mind, however.

@FunWithFlipCam but its not though, as it gets your brain into inter-depence mode and allows the creation of good fills and rhythms :)

@FunWithFlipCam There is no musical application intended.

@XxStrongDrums1996xX Then to me it is a waste of time...note I said to ME. If YOU find it usefull, fantastic. Simon is an amazing technician.
