I just heard Lorie Harken in concert she is a dramatic soprano who you might like too. She has a steely type voice It is completely different then Violeta's .. I love Violeta's voice a lot but she is not a dramatic soprano. I love Guleghina's voice but it is not warm like Violet's.

I really like the timbre. I like the rock solid core that grounds the voice. No, she doesn't float the phrases the way Price or Gencer could do it. But I don't know of any soprano today who could - Voigt? Guleghina? Gorchakova? Stemme? Urmana would be my first pick for this role over all these other 'sopranos'.

I know that comparisons are odious. But YouTube does kinda tempt one to make them. Sure the performance is very good, but far too much vibrato in the tone. As time goes on it will only increase if Ms. U does not take care.

Urmana's voice never convinced me totally as a soprano - I mean, she never convinced me her real fach is "naturally" a soprano, but I do think she's a high mezzo or a falcon like Bumbry or Verrett and sings some soprano roles very impressively. This is one of the great performances, with real Verdian phrasing, musicianship, beautiful timbre and colouring. I still prefer a spinto like Tebaldi or Price, but this is only a matter of timbre. As an artist, she truly deserves her reputation.

Oh dear, I wonder if she has the stamina for this role. The Pellegrina earlier in the performance was strong. Is this transposed down? She sounds like a mezzo here, not a genuine soprano timbre.

Nilsson was a dramatic soprano, didn't sound like this. Rysanek was a dramatic soprano didn't sound like this. Gencer was a dramatic soprano, didn't sound like this. Caballe and Arroyo sang dramatic soprano roles and did not sound like this. She sounds like a mezzo because this role is too "soprano" for her. This aria is supposed to float.
