To expand on my previous comment: Most of these cadets were teenagers. Doesn't Starfleet know that when you give a young person this kind of authority, sooner or later, they let it get to their heads.
The Captain had given the lead cadet a battlefield commission, so that muddies the waters somewhat. Nonetheless, had Nog challenged him, Starfleet would likely have sided with Nog had anything come of it.
Always love the ending, that one girl saying "we failed him," Nog saying it was the captain's fault. "He was a good man. But he was a bad captain." Then he tells Jake to just tell what happened and let the public decide.
As a commissioned officer Nog should have KNOWN that this situation was a bad idea, regardless of what these cadets had been through. A Third Class Petty Officer worth his salt would have peaced out on these Cadidiots
@kurtha11 As an officer, and not a cadet, he should have assumed command of the ship and ordered the cadets to set a course for Earth. Cadets do not outrank officers of any rank. By disobeying him they all could have been tossed out of starfleet. He had full authority over them, and over the ship as the only graduate of the academy and ranked officer.
@Anarchist86ed thought the same thing, then again the new star trek movie had the same situation to kirk, he was made first officer even though he didn't graduate, battlefield commission can happen, although no officer would stand for a situation, i think the writers chose nogs hero worship of read squad to kinds look past the strange situation, although think about it, if you are a officer, your one man with jack vs the ship, at least everyone not crazy lived, blonde cutie included :)
The Red Squad of the Valiant were techically good but they were just not as experienced and creative as season starfleet officers. They were still glued to the textbooks. TO SAY NOTHING OF BEING ARROGANT AND STUPID!!! Nog couldn't have overrided them; even though he was a commission officer, the cadets had control of the ship thru the late captain. Nog just didn't have the rank and he was outnumbered and outgunned.
@MrDavy78 Scimitar perhaps... that is, provided they already had their Thalaron radiation weapon fully charged and ready to fire before the fight actually began.
that Dominion ship is very powerful. you will have to have like 3 defiant class ships to attack that think. That domminion ship is twice the size of a galaxy class starship you may have to used 2 galaxy class ships to attack that ship
@rbrtpongo the Dominion battleship was said on screen to have X3 times the overall strength of a Galaxy class.and you should keep in mind that the Defiant has more firepower then a Galaxy but less Defensive ability.
@Purplecatsoup30 In this episode, Nog was running an errand for Starfleet which had him going back to Feringinar to talk with the Grand Nagus; Jake hitched a lift cause his news service wanted him to do an interview with the Grand Nagus. The Dominion nailed their runabout before they got to Feringinar, and they got picked up by the Valiant.
Shepard was a crappy helmsman. The Defiant with crew would have survived this fight. In 'Shattered Mirror,' you see what kind of maneuvers the Defiant class ships are supposed to do when facing a superior vessel, and it's NOT to fly in straight lines. They should have waited until they were right up against the hull to get a target lock on the 'weak spot.'
@Mkoberland I agree. Red Squad did a CRAPPY, TERRIBLE job compared to the Defiant in the "Shattered Mirror" battle. But 2 things to consider: 1. Red Squad wasn't as experienced as the Defiant crew, mirror universe or not. 2. Even if Red Squad WAS trained in evasive maneuvers, YOU'D THINK THAT THEY WOULD'VE USED THEM HERE!!!!! :P XD
@sunlightguy75 that´s what I asked myself aswell when I first saw this episode.... but do you really think anyone of the crew would have been on his side if he took over the command? I see your point though!!
no wait theres also circumstances in which Nog could take over command but with that prissy lil first officer of his i doubt theyd let that happen...god im such a nerd lol
@sunlightguy75 Nog was given a commission due to the war, but he was only 2 years into the academy, so he didn't have the kind of confidence about his rank that full graduates might have. And he idolized Red Squad, who claimed they got field commissions from their old teacher before he died. Since Nog basically has a field commission too, he didn't feel like arguing. After all, Jake challenged their legitimacy and he got thrown in the brig
Dominion ship at 2:50: "beat it you pesky brats" valiant at 3:10 "Ya owned you" Valiant at 3:20:"Ohh Yaaaa.....Oh shit. Dominion ship at 3:40: Oh i'm mad now.. you dumb asses scratched our new paint job
Once the shields were down, I was expecting the Dominion ship to vaporize the Valiant. They were probably hoping to capture it, but in the end decided to say F' it.
@StarFoxKitsune Finding and replacing a fuse in battle is at best, difficult. Circuit breakers? Where would each one be located and who would flip them back on when they trip and shut down entire consoles during battle?
I know lots of people are going on about how the Valiant went up again the uber Dominion warship and they were all noobs... I'm not too bothered by that, it's all very captain Ahab and with their leader being sufficiently charismatic it makes sense they might buy into this...
BUT my real problem is, you kind of expect a ship of this size to be in a fleet! I mean, it has to require some kind of logistical support and surely a ship like this is just a big target!
This episode kinda bothered me. Even in all the chaos, I doubt Starfleet would have bought that they were lost/destroyed. This ship being high profile would have pinged like crazy in the space lanes. Anyway, they must have all slept through tactical training. A lightcruiser against a battleship, yeah...you're gonna die. Sorry kids.
@eyeofbast While they WERE pretty foolish, in fairness, size isn't everything. Can you imagine Star Wars Episode 4 saying "A lowly starfighter against a space station, yeah....you're gonna die." The Valiant crew THOUGHT they were in the same situation - they just happened to be wrong.
Utter irresponsibilty by a captains behalf...he should of known better that to pit a defiant class vs ..a ship that huge and powerful..especially without backup...
@clovelywindheaven Why the dominion ship was only 2.5 bigger than a galaxy. If the fed ship Excalibur was cannon the dominion ship would still had been bigger.
Their targeting technology seems several centuries behind the times. I was just watching Tank Overhaul the other day and the A1 Abrams tank has a digital thingy that keeps the turret steady on the target no matter how rough the terrain. For instance, look up Ship Self Defense System (SSDS).The system has a "full auto" setting that can engage targets without its crew having to pull the trigger.
@davenielsen78 needless to say, our cap't. never entertained the thought of letting our ship's SSDS go into 'full auto" during a training evolution...so it's safe to say that he wouldnt have the balls to go "full auto" during a real conflict. I can see both sides of why we should/shouldnt let computers do all the work. our SSDS broke alot. BUT, In THEIR case, I would have gone "full auto" and worried about dodging and not getting my ass roasted by incomming fire!
@Bracerjack Yeah really. I am glad our military consoles arent the first things to blow when shit hits the fan. But then again if one of those unhinged and rolled on ya, then you wouldnt need an explosion to be royally fucked. The crushing weight and momentum would send all of your organs flying right out of your ass, lol. As for these guys and their exploding consoles...yeah, it woudlnt be sitting there in a cute federation long sleeve shirt. haha try a FLACK VEST and a few fire extinguishers!
I can imagine when one of the engineers ask the designers why they designed it this way, those flamboyant designers said to the engineer, it's going to be "fabulous" when the console explode, it's like you know....cool...
If the borg assimilated red squad it's the borg i would feel sorry for having assimilated the biggest pain in the neck that starfleet has to offer, i'm changing the squad's name from red squad to red shirt squad because part of their uniform is coloured red and nearly all of them end up dead
@Goderich1942 lol...yeah it was a bitch move...But if someone were dumb enough to pull a maneuver like these losers did, then expect everything to get flame roasted ...even escape pods( and their noob asses). No such thing as a fair fignt. If the Borg had escape pods, I sure as hell wouldnt let those bitches float away to fight another day as im sure most bad guys feel the say way about the nature and abilities of the a Federation ship, fleet, etc.
The Captain took a huge gamble with the crew's life. It just goes to show that the battlefield is not the proper place to test working theories. If the Valiant had returned to Starfleet and submitted a report, the Admirals at the Flag level could have decided whether it was worth the credible risk to send in a wing of Galaxies, or a more maneuverable fighter escort to try and exploit the structural weakness in the Dominion battleship, or not. Courage and faith do not ablative armor create.
You ever wonder why they never use that "Picard Maneuver" when Star Fleet vessels are in battle. I think it would have helped them get either behind that Battleship or at least underneath it.
Kind of like we'll never see that new tech that was shown in the 2009 movie. The one where you can beam someone onto a ship, not only at warp, but in a different solar system. Isn't it great when writers just dream up new shit just to fit it into the story line...... NOT.
They missed the opportunity to cause secondary damage by strafing the ship with phaser fire. They made a run, yet didn't hardly do anything. What a waste.
Has anyone else noticed that in sci fi shows any time a ship gets hit, sparks flash and explosions that have nothing to do with the spot that was hit randomly pop up in the most inconvenient places?
@nerfwarrior6349 What about the bitchy first officer? She needs a good smack in the face by a vulcan (who are three times stronger then humans). And what's up with that terrible haircut? No one with the exception of the blonde security chief was remotely likeable, they all deserved what they got!
Everytime i watch this episode i want to jump through the TV screen and bitch slap every one of those brats from red squad..... who do they think they are using a defiant class ship like they did.... idiots
@1ownjoo2 in their defence, the Defiant-class was the most advance ship at the time....though i am curious as to why (haven't seen the full episode yet) a bunch of Acaemy kids can order around a commisioned Starfleet officer (Nog)
Red Squad, full of brilliant young people, on a top quality Defiant class ship... but extremely ignorant of what they were facing. No doubt they would have become fine officers eventually but out there all alone, they were without guidance and Watters led them to their doom, thinking they could match a fucking DREADNOUGHT all alone.
@Empyreanabove It was two+ miles long, it was a dreadnaught, the probable flag ship of the entire Dominion fleet in the alpha quadrant. What I don't understand is why such a huge target didn't have some escort ships if it was still vulnerable to that "Death Star" maneuver.
what a wasted deifiant class warship if this ship was not destroyed and Nog is in charge this ship could have been used and backup for the second battle of chintoka
It would have been better had the ship bugged out the second they found out they'd failed- with heavy damage and half the crew dead, they'd have faced some hard questions back home. And blatant use of the character shield for just one escape pod to survive...
Much as I hated the Dominion winning this battle, Red Squad got what they deserved. They got treated like they were elites, and they developed arrogance. That arrogance and the arrogance of youth got them all killed when the smart, responsible thing would have been for them to make a beeline to Federation space when the war began.
@UFO721 In other words they greatly underestimated their enemy. That too. They probably felt they were David and the battleship was Goliath. Gave Goliath a bloody nose, but that's all.
@UFO721 In other words, they greatly underestimated their enemy. That too. They felt they were David and that they could take out the Goliath of a battleship. They scratched it before Goliath stomped them and ground them into the ground.
I imagine that had it come down to a final battle over Cardassia facing more of those monsters plus support ships, orbiting defense platforms and stations, the Alliance fleet would have been decimated.
@bookeater That would be against Starfleet regulations. All starship control consoles are required to explode, and all starship warp cores must breach at least once per episode.
@DarthBismarck Hmmm...instead of hanging round to cheer(and to see if they did any damage), why in the hell didn't they punch it to warp 9 and get the hell away from the battlewagon?!
Worst crew in star trek history. Slow reactions...whci actually is commonplace in the Star Trek universe. Even goign back to Captain Kirk. Battle is a bang bang proposition and these people are moping around asking questions.
I have a question. I know its just a tv show and the creators would have been without an episode had they done this but: Why didn't Nog pull rank? Unlike those cadets he was an actual commissioned officer and therefore had seniority over all of them regardless of what their cadet ranks were.
@williamskidfears Yeah, I know all that, and I know they'd be out of an episode if he did, but I still feel the need to call bullshit on the whole thing. I hated Wesley Crusher on his own, not a whole crew's worth of him.
@younggun4179 In a way, yeah, it is total bullshit, the episode sucks from the moment the runabout left the starbase, but, still and all, the USS Wesley Crusher Fail Boat episode does contribute, story-wise, to Egg Nog's continuing education as a Starfleet officer, the rest of said education costing him an arm and a leg(or, at least a leg) on AR-558.
@williamskidfears Tru-dat good sir, and all things honestly considered if lossing a whole ships worth of Wesley Crushers means it will make an Ensign like Nog a better officer than that is a price I am more than willing to pay.
I had a huge crush on the blonde talking about the moon back when I was a teen :) glad she made it, the smart one always do :P

@Bracerjack If they can't fix that problem, at least issue body armor to your crew.

True that!
Bracerjack 7 months ago
@Bracerjack Yeah really. I am glad our military consoles arent the first things to blow when shit hits the fan. But then again if one of those unhinged and rolled on ya, then you wouldnt need an explosion to be royally fucked. The crushing weight and momentum would send all of your organs flying right out of your ass, lol. As for these guys and their exploding consoles...yeah, it woudlnt be sitting there in a cute federation long sleeve shirt. haha try a FLACK VEST and a few fire extinguishers!

@Bracerjack Because like geniuses, they put power nodes inside the console...which means when they overload, it's gonna be in your face. lol

I can imagine when one of the engineers ask the designers why they designed it this way, those flamboyant designers said to the engineer, it's going to be "fabulous" when the console explode, it's like you know....cool...

@Bracerjack Lulz, pretty much. XD

If the borg assimilated red squad it's the borg i would feel sorry for having assimilated the biggest pain in the neck that starfleet has to offer, i'm changing the squad's name from red squad to red shirt squad because part of their uniform is coloured red and nearly all of them end up dead

Captain: Noob
First Officer: Noob
Pretty much everyone apart from Nog: Noobs
They shouldn't have called it USS Valiant. They should have called it USS Noob.

THOSE BASTARDS!!! You DO NOT fire on escape pods! NEVER EVER!
Goderich1942 7 months ago

Star Fleet really needs to do something about thos exploding consoles...
happymax1 7 months ago 2
You ever wonder why they never use that "Picard Maneuver" when Star Fleet vessels are in battle. I think it would have helped them get either behind that Battleship or at least underneath it.
Kind of like we'll never see that new tech that was shown in the 2009 movie. The one where you can beam someone onto a ship, not only at warp, but in a different solar system. Isn't it great when writers just dream up new shit just to fit it into the story line...... NOT.
Double dumb-ass. LOL

I could see the Vorta on the Dominion ship hailing the Valiant after the failed trench run.
"That thing you just blew up wasn't that important. It was the fluid catalytic cracking unit. It made shoes for orphans. Nice job breaking it, hero."
PerryWhyte 8 months ago 2
They missed the opportunity to cause secondary damage by strafing the ship with phaser fire. They made a run, yet didn't hardly do anything. What a waste.

Has anyone else noticed that in sci fi shows any time a ship gets hit, sparks flash and explosions that have nothing to do with the spot that was hit randomly pop up in the most inconvenient places?

THE CAPTAIN!
nerfwarrior6349 9 months ago 3
@nerfwarrior6349 What about the bitchy first officer? She needs a good smack in the face by a vulcan (who are three times stronger then humans). And what's up with that terrible haircut? No one with the exception of the blonde security chief was remotely likeable, they all deserved what they got!

Everytime i watch this episode i want to jump through the TV screen and bitch slap every one of those brats from red squad..... who do they think they are using a defiant class ship like they did.... idiots
1ownjoo2 9 months ago 16
@1ownjoo2 in their defence, the Defiant-class was the most advance ship at the time....though i am curious as to why (haven't seen the full episode yet) a bunch of Acaemy kids can order around a commisioned Starfleet officer (Nog)
uchihaitachi181 6 months ago
Red Squad, full of brilliant young people, on a top quality Defiant class ship... but extremely ignorant of what they were facing. No doubt they would have become fine officers eventually but out there all alone, they were without guidance and Watters led them to their doom, thinking they could match a fucking DREADNOUGHT all alone.
AICabal 9 months ago 3
It always annoyed me the way they messed with the scale for dramatic effect. The Dominion ship looked about two miles long.
Empyreanabove 9 months ago
@Empyreanabove the defiant is tiny.
moe47988 9 months ago
@Empyreanabove It was two+ miles long, it was a dreadnaught, the probable flag ship of the entire Dominion fleet in the alpha quadrant. What I don't understand is why such a huge target didn't have some escort ships if it was still vulnerable to that "Death Star" maneuver.
hamanu666 8 months ago
Talk about your Hobiksi Maru's
SunTrapped 9 months ago
what a wasted deifiant class warship if this ship was not destroyed and Nog is in charge this ship could have been used and backup for the second battle of chintoka
Badboy21thekiller 9 months ago
It would have been better had the ship bugged out the second they found out they'd failed- with heavy damage and half the crew dead, they'd have faced some hard questions back home. And blatant use of the character shield for just one escape pod to survive...
Sovereign01 10 months ago
Much as I hated the Dominion winning this battle, Red Squad got what they deserved. They got treated like they were elites, and they developed arrogance. That arrogance and the arrogance of youth got them all killed when the smart, responsible thing would have been for them to make a beeline to Federation space when the war began.
YTAFan 10 months ago 2
@YTAFan More ignorance than arrogance.
UFO721 9 months ago
@UFO721 Yuo mean they were ignorant of their limitations? I can see that.
YTAFan 9 months ago
@YTAFan No in terms of their enemy.
UFO721 9 months ago
@UFO721 In other words they greatly underestimated their enemy. That too. They probably felt they were David and the battleship was Goliath. Gave Goliath a bloody nose, but that's all.
YTAFan 9 months ago
@UFO721 In other words, they greatly underestimated their enemy. That too. They felt they were David and that they could take out the Goliath of a battleship. They scratched it before Goliath stomped them and ground them into the ground.

geez is this from DS9 ? it looks so out dated and lame,
crazyknight2008 10 months ago
I imagine that had it come down to a final battle over Cardassia facing more of those monsters plus support ships, orbiting defense platforms and stations, the Alliance fleet would have been decimated.
Fbueller129 10 months ago
I love the description. At the end. Blunt and simple. 'They Fail.' Red Squad sucks cock.
ScireSpire 10 months ago
how come the ship wasnt destroyed?
aznlonelyheart 11 months ago
Maybe starfleet should design consoles that DO NOT blow up easily so they can kill their users dramaticly
bookeater 11 months ago
@bookeater That would be against Starfleet regulations. All starship control consoles are required to explode, and all starship warp cores must breach at least once per episode.

Unlike those cadets he was an actual commissioned officer and therefore had seniority over all of them regardless of what their cadet ranks were.
younggun4179 1 year ago 5
@younggun4179 Cos he had a hard on for Red Squad. He used to be a member when he was a cadet(see "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost").
williamskidfears 1 year ago
@williamskidfears Yeah, I know all that, and I know they'd be out of an episode if he did, but I still feel the need to call bullshit on the whole thing. I hated Wesley Crusher on his own, not a whole crew's worth of him.
younggun4179 1 year ago
@younggun4179 In a way, yeah, it is total bullshit, the episode sucks from the moment the runabout left the starbase, but, still and all, the USS Wesley Crusher Fail Boat episode does contribute, story-wise, to Egg Nog's continuing education as a Starfleet officer, the rest of said education costing him an arm and a leg(or, at least a leg) on AR-558.
williamskidfears 1 year ago
@williamskidfears Tru-dat good sir, and all things honestly considered if lossing a whole ships worth of Wesley Crushers means it will make an Ensign like Nog a better officer than that is a price I am more than willing to pay.
