@WhitePureTrue Wow, nothing constructive came out of that. My husband and I laughed at the whole trophy wife thing. Because that was a good laugh. You should go on television, funny man.
I honestly believe that we speak American here in the states. I have heard English spoken by the English and it seems different than what we speak here. Perhaps it is more of an American dialect. But the fact that someone said "Thank you for speaking American." is really more about the ladies lack of education.
Nice. I've been in customer service and there was no shortage of ignorance and douchebaggery from callers. That was the exception though, not the rule.
I recommend "The Adventure of English: The Biography of a Language" By Melvyn Bragg or the History Channel's version of it, available here on YouTube.
It's interesting to note that we are rapidly approaching the point where the number of people who speak English as a second or third language will outnumber native speakers.
Perhaps she meant that you spoke SAE (Standard American English). It can be hard to understand different dialects or accents that someone is not used to hearing.(a good example of this is made in the movie snatch) Another Problem is that those who do not speak english natively may have a difficult time understanding different words with similar meanings like if someone said jacket vs coat. Also Canada is in north america, so they would technically be american.
American must be a language; why else would British competitors in the ultimate fighter need (English) subtitles? I could understand the need for someone like me who speaks English as a third language, but for Americans?
It leads me to infer one of two things; either Americans are monumentally... stupendously... idiotic, or they speak some other language.
I'm choosing to be charitable and go with the latter.
