@benriche6 It is tradition to sing hymns before the rugby league cup final(usually held at Wembly Stadium) and at many rugby union internationals,especially in Cardiff.
That's my girl... THAT's how you sing a religious hymn/anthem: the way it was intended by it's author/composer, not with crazy vocal runs which trivializes it and brings it down to the level of an ordinary pop song...
@hitmanhornster I'll tell you why, a couple of million commonwealth troops gave their lives to protect Britain & the free world from rule....we dont forget such loyalty & sacrifice in our commonwealth of our all our armies..nuff said.
Isn't it great that a sporting event such as this should be commemorated with such a beautiful song? Remembering all those gone before us. God bless England, & God bless sport! (Especially rugby)
This is a beautiful rendition of one of our greatest hymns. The smiles of the crowd say it all. In all sadness there is hope, especially when Hayley Westenra sings!
the roses you refer to were the red rose (house of lancaster) lancashire, and the white rose (house of york) yorkshire, whom fought the war of the roses. the game of rugby league in britain is predominatly played in these 2 counties
@wire5858 i think you left that comment as a reply to me. either you or the video-poster must have screwed up, because your comment is shown as not being a reply. i think i heard about the war of the roses because it was mentioned in shakespeare's writings. his writings got a lot of attention here in the u.s., and i imagine they got even more attention in britain. rugby is interesting, but it doesn't seem to get much notice here. right now i tend to watch the ice hockey games on tv.
this has become 1 of my favorite videos. i guess the rose symbol at english rugby games has some connection to the war of the roses, back in the middle ages. the people who had white roses fought against the people with red roses. i've heard that the rose is used as a symbol for england, and yet there are roses here too. there's likely a legend ( either true or fictitious ) about roses playing a part in english history. this song seems more like a funeral song.
that's very good. nevertheless i find it strange to have a religious song at a sporting event. maybe this is more common among the british than here in the u.s. i don't think such a song at a sporting event would go over well in the u.s.
@coventrygardens This is a tradition which goes back to 1927 and is sometimes sung at sporting events in the UK, and always without fail at the English FA Cup Final. The communal singing is supposed to unite the opposing and often warring factions representing the two teams about to play each other, many of them who hold no religious beliefs of any kind. It doesn't work, but nevertheless the Cup Final would not be the Cup Final without it
@blackbeasthamish thanks. i looked up the info after you left the comment. some youtubers have assumed that i'm british because of my youtube handle. in truth, i chose the name because i was raised in a neighborhood called "coventry gardens", near detroit, near the province of ontario. in coventry gardens, the streets are named after towns in england. i lived on surrey street, and i had friends on whitby and norwich streets. i have no idea what caused someone to use the names of english towns.

@hitmanhornster Maybe the singer wants to calm down the "fighting" spirit of the some of the unruly audience.

Great performance by Hayley.
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heavens morning breaks, and earths vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
