  • Hey Nutn,

I think you should get your hands on a "samekniv" it's a native knife much used in Norway. I like it a lot, just search "samekniv" on google pics! I don't know how easy it is to get your hands on in the states, but you should test it out for sure!

  • Hey Nutn,

Did you ever contact Ontario and/or Justin to get the handles re profiled? I have read that they fixed the problem, and am considering ordering one of these (I have smallish hands). I also considered the BK9 (have a BK2 and love it), and the RTAK II, but wanted a 1/4" thick blade. I was looking for a large knife with this styling (dont like the traditional bowie look, or I would go with the Marine Raider or Heavy Bowie).

  • im sorry, but you dont wont to cut or chop a tree that is that big. you lose to many energy and you need that for finding food and water if youre in a survival situation

  • Hey nutn or veri :) I was wondering what is perfered. The Ontario rat 7 or Ontario rd7? thanks!

  • @84SuperDom I have an RD-7 and I think I'd rather have the Rat 7.

RD-7 handle isn't great and my blade is chipped as well. =(

  • @markshmily Cool thanks man. They seem so similiar ive really been trying to research other opnions. I think i will go with the rat. from what ive been reading 1095 steel is prob the way to go

  • Im suprised you never mentioned the buck hoodlum. Its at a higher price point but similar in size and much lighter. Also the 5160 blade meterial held up better on the hoodlum. HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING! That gives me an idea. You should do a review of some turkey carving knives. LOL.

  • @kalenberg11 This video is 2 years old, the hoodlum didnt exist when he made it.

  • @pabushcraft That certainly explains why. Haha. Thanks for the heads up.

  • bewteen this & the cold steel trial master which one do u think i shoul git

  • What are you spraying on the knife.

  • Love your videos. What are your favorite gloves for knife or outdoor use?

  • Balistic goggles should be carried by you guys lol

  • Hey Nutnfancy, should i get an ontario sp5 or rd9???

  • Ontario RD-Hawk, and ESEE 5...AWSOME kit!

  • That edge looks dented more so than chipped. This isn't uncommon in factory blades for a number of reasons, if you grind them out it isn't likely to happen again. It isn't the expected performance of 5160, or anything else really to come apart on light wood work.

5160 isn't a tool steel, it is a spring steel.

  • would you take the rd9 over the rtakII?

  • No bitch lol

  • SRK or SP17 for a day hike/camp knife?

  • Hey Nutn, thanks for your videos! very informative.

question: Have you done some hard work with the Ontario SP6?

(batoning and whatnot) i'm looking into buying one.

do you think the blade is too thin for hardcore stuff?

    thanks!

  • u guys suk

  • The chip could habe happened b/c of sand or little stones in the bark. Especially conifers tend to pick up sand while they're growing.

  • After watching you chop at this tree, I need to send you one of my knives.

  • I spend a tron of time in the bush, mostly Solo Canoe, and frankly unless you plan on taking nothing else. a Big knife is a waste of weight and space. Better is something like the Master Hunter, or similar quality knife for camp chores, and a good camp axe, hatchet or folding saw depending on the trip and need. If weight is the primary issue, then use a good cable saw, or chainsaw blade and cut a bow when you need one.

  • Hey Veri I really want to know something, what does Nutn thing of the Gerber LMF2,Prodigy series?

  • @CutleryNovice My account is blocked by your channel...

  • @Verilioness I'm sorry bout that I have no idea why you were blocked, maybe I clicked the wrong button

  • I know Rtak has a better handle but it is 3/16ths thick this is stout .25. With that said Does Nutn Prefer Ranger 9 or the Becker Bk9 for chopping/Splitting? Thanks. I do have the Ranger 7 - has a 7.5 inch blade Great splitter ok chopper but like Nutn for Chopping it's an 8 inch or more.

  • in a working environment, for thinner blades and knives we used a medium or fine metal file to sharpen our blades....... put the blade on your lap and file away from you.... towards the tip, flip over and repeat on the other side, very Important important caution.... gets Extremley Sharp, always be careful .... thanks

  • in a working environment, for thinner blades and knives we used a medium or fine metal file to sharpen our blades....... put the blade on your lap and file away from you, flip over and repeat on the other side, very Important important caution.... gets Extremley Sharp, always be careful .... thanks

  • What bag was that on 5:59? What purposes would you delegate this bag to?

  • The RD9 chips pretty easy. I was chopping a pine log making extra sure no to hit the ground and the blade chipped.

  • The RD9 chips pretty easy. I was chopping a pine log making extra sure no to hit the ground and the blade chipped.

  • what abut food ? in the woods

  • Did you ever do a review on the ranger rd6?

  • how the hell do u carry all those quarter inch blades out into the woods?

  • I own several ranger knives, and I have never experienced any chipping. Thats weird nutnfancy. Though the coating comes off pretty fast.

  • i owned several ontario Ranger RD-6+7 knives.sold them all.the handles didnt feel good in the hand.too square, too sharp edges, too flat, too wide.iow, no good ergonomics.the Junglas is a very good alternative.but there are more options.

  • hey nutn wondering wheres the best place to buy ontario knifes? i cant find a rtak 2 for under 90$ but on fourms i saw it was 60$ 5months ago...if you could help thanks

  • i dont understand the black blades? it just looks like crap after one use?

  • is the RTAK - II better than the trailmaster?

  • Hey Nutn/Veri. Comparing the two, the RTAK II is probably the superior knife to the RD9. However, taking the price and weight into consideration ($90 vs. $100; 23 oz. vs. 30.5 oz), which blade would be the better overall to take on backpacking trips?

  • @aznpos531 Hiya azn. Nutn says he prefers the RTAK ll but its really heavy for distance backpacking. He prefers the Ontario Gen 2 SP-46 or similar. Hope that helps. -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy Thanks Veri! That helps! I also want to take this chance and thank you personally for dealing with all the incessant questions you no doubt get on a daily basis. You and Nutn truly are the life and blood of TNP! =)

  • @aznpos531 Oo thanks! That's awful nice of you. -- Veri

  • @aznpos531 I'm no Nutnfancy, but here's another data point if you like. The RD9 is much lighter, without losing much chopping capability (if any) and the RD9 is of a thicker stock which makes it split better. I prefer the RD9's 5160 spring steel over 1095, though both are excellent wilderness steels, in my humid environment the 5160 is superior. Only complaint against the RD9 you might have is the handle which is a bit shorter than RTAK II. The RD9 is a bit cooler looking too. Just my thoughts:)

  • @Wingsfan7 Thanks for that! I'm currently using the Cold Steel SRK for my day hikes since that's all I have time for right now. But I'm still in the market for a bigger blade for my longer excursions. your comment will definitely help in my future purchase. Thanks again!

  • i just ordered the ontario Ranger Bush Series RBS-7 Will it preform as well as the rd9 -2 inches?

  • @TheWhiteandproud Itll come close.

  • @TheWhiteandproud The RBS-7 is more comparable to the RD7. The RD series knives are 1/4" thick, which makes them a better splitter. The RBS series is 3/16" thick, which is about two mm less than the RDs. The only other difference between the two series is the steels. Both are excellent choices in steels, although I tend to favour the 5160 steel in the RD's over the also well proven 1095. The FFG on the RBS will aid in splitting even though it's thinner. Hope this helps, and enjyo the knife dude!

  • hey nutn how do you keep your survival blades from rusting up in high alpine areas. i mean if your there for a 3 day hiking/camping trip and its snowing. What do you do?

  • i need to get my self one of those!

  • 1:55 thats what she said xP

  • I'm curious, when you chop a tree trunk to demonstrate a knife such as this one, do you sharpen them prior to the demonstration?

  • Hey if you had to say for about 80 maybe a little less what do you think is the best survival knife? Please answer

  • If not that might as well get the Ontario Raider Bowie that is only $40, besides poorly done micarta handle slabs - the RD9 really has nothing over that knife. The old, cheap Spec Plus sheaths are actually preferable to the ones coming with these $80-$100 Ranger models. They just chuck in $2 generic sheaths from China with all their knife models now.

  • Best to spend the extra money on ESEE Junglas, much better sheath kydex sheath with cordura back that is actually made in America just like the knife. Better fit and finish (always finished by hand), better steel and heat-treat. No questions asked, transferable lifetime warranty.

  • what does "Han Solo" style mean?

  • It's not to bad just not ment to cut down 6 or 7 inches of tree amazing review i know which knife im choosing

  • I just got this knife. The knife itself is really great handle is good blade is thick but not too thick. The sheath is more bad than good. Slides out very easily but the main problem is the velcrow

  • who ever thought just a knife (Ontario Night Stalker 6) could make me want to go on a camping trip!

  • I get it now.

Get the youngun's to do the chopping.

  • Hey Nutn: I got one of these and have found that it works well, though the handle is certainly too small. I used mine on a hike yesterday. I chopped Vine Maple...which is EXTREMELY hard! I didn't have any chipping in the steel on mine at all. I also used it on some Birch...which can be very hard too. Again...worked very well. I didn't use it to baton wood, though. Generally, I prefer a hatchet/axe for those tasks...but it doesn't always make sense to pack an axe.

  • Cutting through hard wood like that, you're eventually gonna dull. Where I camp/hike, there's Oak,and some evergreen.

  • lol i busted at least 10 bucks whackin the tip

  • Middle of nowhere = best place to be.

  • Heha hard wood.... sorry Im only 14 so bear with me here...

  • i love mt rd 9. i dont see any flaws in it at all

  • @hulkbuster1026 handle too short, that's a big flaw

  • i love my cold steel srk i take it everywhere, woods in the southeast and to the beach

i cant wait to use it in more terrain

  • Great video really enjoyed it.

I really need help on picking a good general purpose all round knife. I will be using it for camping, splitting wood and utility purposes, I've never owned a good knife before and any advice on choice of knife would be appreciated. I go away camping alot in Australia and have been let down by knives I've owned in the past. Thanks for the video nutn. Full respect.

  • The edge chipping could probably be corrected if the owner possesses an oven capable of reaching and sustaining 475-500 degrees for an hour.. YOu could remove the scales and try retempering it at around 500 degree's.... This would toughen the blade some and hopefully bring the RC hardeness down a few points.. You do not need 57-58 c scale hardness in a knife like this,,, 55 would be plenty hard.

  • I dont think the chip out of the blade had anything to do with it being 5160.. That should be a great steel for a hard use knife.. The lower carbon content should in fact show reduced incidence of edge chipping over 1095... IMO the problem can probably be traced back to Ontario not getting the optimal Heat Treatment in the steel for use in high impact applications ...

  • seems to me like re profiling the edge will make it even more likely to chip.

anyways i'm wondering to what degree did the cold conditions of the testing environment contribute to the chipping?

also im wondering about the marine raider and its fine tip.

which do you think is more fragile?

  • As I'm watching this (for the 2d time) it really strikes me, NOBODY else is making vids let alone review vids like TNP and if they are I've never seen'em that's for sure.

    Man I enjoy TNP!

Thanks you so much for all the effort as well as to those (Veri) who help you make your project a reality. It's so good.

Thank you once again for all the hard work and effort.

  • I don't see the point in carrying a knife for chopping. That's what axes are for.

  • @ZeroToleranceKnives in my opinion a good knife chops almost like an axe if not the same and you can do more with a knife than an axe

  • @ZeroToleranceKnives

    but

    - safety is a bigger problem with axes

    - I guess as most others that nutn is carrying a saw. This chopping is only a test as a wilderness knife should be to chop in case your saw breaks

    - Knives is better to split with in a safe way than axes. You dont always have a nice splitting block

that said i carry a small, ligth axe when hiking

  • my woodman's ax does that quicker and easierand can do most everything a knife with a freakin 9 in blade can do except stab

knives are meant to be used for only fine stuff while a heavier machette or ax for the rest by the way my ax may be slightly heavier but in weight to effectiveness the ax and small knife pair really puts your Full sized survival knife out of business

  • Not bashing you but a large knife has been a main stay since the frontier days. Batoning is not some thing that has been just recently discovered In processing wood ...limiting your view of knives to only fine work will hamper your capabilities in the field... They are all tools no more than that.....learn what they can and can't do and you wont go wrong....

  • why are you watching this review then? your comment does nothing to either inprove this video or educate other. your comment is in fact pointless its personal choice wich you carry and nutnfancy even said that in the video

  • Yeah...5160 is Spring steel. That may have been a result of the blade, when being heat treated that the carbides didn't form right and became too brittle, lost toughness and durability.

  • your dog is adorable

  • I have a large ka-bar bowie. The one that you reviewed and it chipped out after 2 uses. I did a vid response which Iwould like you to take a look at. Give your points on it. Thanks

  • Im thinking of getting a RD-6 do you think it will chip out as well

  • Comment removed

  • Dont you also have the Cold Steel Recon Scout that you really like. How does it compare here

  • ther have the ka-bar heavy bowie is 1095 steel and is much cheaper

  • @nightshade288

    So?

Nutn already made a review of ka-bar heavy bowie.

  • i never said he didnt do a review just say the heavy bowie is much better for me

  • I bought the Fallkniven A1 on Nutn's review. I love it.

  • I avoid Velcro on all hunting and outdoor equipment because of the excessive niose. I like products that allow me to remain more "stelthy". I'll cut Velcro off and replace it with stainless steel snaps everytime on backpacks, clothes and all outdoor stuff!. Just as info!

  • Could you tell me where to get snap buttons and what i need to install them please

  • They come in a kit with the instillation tool. Very inexpensive and you can get them at craft stores maybe even Wal-Mart.

  • "Han Solo Style" LOL!!! Good stuff Nutn.

  • nut u got the best vids on you tube bro u and bugget's adventures and of course alley the dog are the best man u guys are down to earth u guys need to go film a overnighter with each other that would be great man keep em comming

  • love these vids..keep 'em comin.

  • With all due respect, and i'm a big fan of 'nutnfancy', but it doesn't seem as though he's really swinging the knife, just small little chops. This video wouldn't sell me on this knife, but his vids on the Spyderco Persistence and Tenacious sure did.

    Now here's 'chopping', youtube vids:

"Busse Fusion Battle Mistress Limited Edition"

    "RTAKII modified"

  • I totally agree with dss8345. I love the videos with field testing, keep those ones coming! Big fan. I'm going to look into getting a large survival knife.

  • I continue to appreciate the detailed reviews. Thank you, nutnfancy.

  • Love the reviews that contain a lot of field testing video. Awesome knife review. I'll always be a proud supporter of TNP.

  • Oh man, what a nice thing to say! We'll always be glad to have you around too. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • Great review Nutn thx

  • your a great reviewer, nice job, keep it up.

  • A very good revue, for woodchipping wear safetyglasses or shootingglasses

  • Hey nutn, good job.

But don't chop with your thumb on the spine of the blade, as this can mess up your joints over the long run.

  • Good one ! Honest review .

  • Ur crazy (you wanted us to call you that:)). No, good one. Which survival knife do you recommend if I do not have time to watch all the videos?

  • I would say that the Cold Steel Trailmaster is one of Nutn's most recommended survival blades. Previously reviewed by Nutn'.

  • Oh,right. Thank you. Is there any cheaper alternative? This one goes for almost $200 at my country:(.

  • You might consider buying it online and paying for international shipment.

  • Ontario and Cold Steel make good 12" machetes which go for a round $20 American. Really any 12" machete will do, those are just the ones I prefer.

  • TOPS ANACONDA PREVAILS!

    good vid tho.

  • dig your vids man.keep them up!! stay safe!

  • Axes take a lot more skill to use. Its easy to really hurt yourself.

  • Hey just a question, how do you pronounce "Fällkniven"?

  • he says it in the video, around 9 minutes in

  • for myself, i carry a 12" ontario machette for wood chopping, i do not use my knife.

  • I think a woodsman pal would have been more suited for chopping. But you are reviewing this knife and checking it's capabilities. It does seem to hold up well.

  • Ya dude... I love this stuff... To me your the king of gear and knowlegde of the outdoors... You have taught me soooo much about nature's way and survival...I thank you for all your hard work... I hope you have your own t.v program soon.. I'd love to see you on discovery.

  • Nutn great review dude...I have a RD9 and you are dead on on all the points

mine also chipped alittle...but mine chipped from hitting the ground while cutting wood so your not the only one that this happend too...

when it comes to chopping you are dead on dude very good...5Star

  • So hold on this guy cuts down trees to test knives?

  • I have a question, why not bring a saw with you? the swedes have some very lite and durable steele that fold . you seem to expell alot of energy cutting wood that way, a saw would be very easy to pack. I an a landscaper and it would be a good idea to at least take a look.

  • He does. He uses a sawvivor in some of his videos. He's testing knives out which comes in handy batoning wood :)

  • thanks, I must have missed those vids.

  • very similar to rtak II

  • A shame to hear that Ontario plans to discontinue the Spec-Plus line. I've owned an SP3 since 1993, and I love it...I'm going to grab a Marine Raider while I still can.

  • you are the best! as always! cheers from italy!

  • i was cutting down some hardwood a few weeks ago with a short axe and a chip flung up and gave me a shiner. great video nutn

  • i know that backpack its a Sargent marine back pack my Friend has one. Hes a gunnery Sargent

  • Dont think hes ever done a Busse or Swamp Rat, but the keywords were sure in the tags.

  • Sorry I missed spelled that. Its a Rodent Waki by Swamp Rat.

  • Have you thought of trying out the Radient Waki. It is smiliar to a machete but has better chopping power and a thicker blade.

  • I'll just get good bowie knife.

    not cheap one though.

    Proven traditional design.

  • All of you guys are arguing like uncivilized girls. Its pathetic. I think Nutn puts these knives through their paces because he wants us to know what we they are capable of. Also it may be a matter of opinion to use simply a knife over a machete because of weight and maybe this is all you have in a "SURVIVAL" situation. Hence limited resources!!! Thats why he shows us this!!! Also he does have reviews on the Ka-Bars but the new stainless ones, not the 1095.

  • @gabe562, a very,very good comment

  • n utnfancy, I hope you have a good stone to resharpen that balde.

  • Seems to me that the Ranger line could not compete with the previous RAT line. RAT will come out with a 10" blade of their own soon, Nutn.. Just a tip;)

  • what about the machete?

  • Red Dawn comes to mind.

  • great

  • What about the original Ka-bar? Arent those proven survival grunt knives?! Any opinions? I think Nutn should do a review!!!

  • Already done ^^

Search Nutn's channel and you should find multiple ka-bar reviews.

  • these guys are fuckin hicks i swear use a goddamn axe i get your whole concept but its a knife lets be serious who actually wants to split logs with a knife?

  • horrorbusiness420 writes: "use a @#%^@%^ axe..." I think the point of using a knife for multiple tasks is so that you don't have to take an axe AND a knife! An axe is heavy and takes up precious space. Why not find a knife that do the job of a knife and an axe? Yes, an axe is better at chopping down trees, but why add the weight?

  • @ranhefner ,yes well when you take such large blades with you for woodworking than you might as well take a good axe.better do it right.and a shot fixed blade.the large blade is only good for batoning and chopping.

  • @ranhefner for all other tasks a shorter knife works much better.

  • @ranhefner RD-4 plus axe.or BK-2 plus axe.all the way.

  • @ranhefner waht about a mora and an axe

  • @RRFF12345 If noone has already told you...the mora (style) knife and an axe allowed many a viking to survive!

  • Wonder how much nutn makes being a youtube partner?

40k subscribers brings home the bacon!

  • zero, he doesnt accept handouts.

  • Your wrong, when advertisements come up on the side of the video or at the bottom of the screen it means your a youtube partner. Which means.....you get money.

Its a great way to make some cash. There's nothing wrong with that. Nutn should get paid for this with the amount of time he spends.

  • Hopefully he gets more than I think he gets, but I doubt its much.

  • lol whisper "I've seen one break thoughhh" xD crack me up nutn

  • The Ranger Knives are a terrific buy. Check out my Custom RD6 to see how accomodating Justin Gingrich can be!

  • machetes would cut that tree a bit faster than that..a good well maintained sharp machete the one that freedy use to chop people LOL

  • You're thinking of Jason, lol.

  • oh yeah ahahaha thanks....i just finish watching the freed vs jason movie so i kinda mix things up but thanks for the correction

    :D

  • Thanks for the review Nutn -and the testing. I love seeing knives getting used.

    Rock on man!

looking foreword to some axe reviews whenever they may come.

    Thanks again.

  • To the "copied RAT design" posts, the Ranger Knives RD series was around before Rat existed, The new Rangers are threw Ontario, Little history for the rats still wet behind the ears.

  • Great review! Always enjoy them.

  • Very cool vid as usual, what about flash lights? How about some rugged flash light reviews?

  • What's with Americans and cutting small trees with large knives. You know it is much easier to cut a tree with an axe?

  • because we are bad ass dude

  • Nutnfancy has addressed this in another video. Nonetheless, in short, machetes/large knives are far lighter and far more useful than an axe (or hatchet generally.) Try whitling with that axe, or skinning, or preparing food, or doing anything really apart from chopping large wood. Yes, an axe has its advantages, but they are seriously limited in comparison to the flexibility of a large knife.

If you prefer an axe, carry one. Better yet, carry both. But you'll expend extra energy to do it.

  • Anyway is is damn hard to whitle and skin game with a knife that large. I know, I tried it out with a 12 inch machete.

  • @unexpectedTrajectory what?you want to skin or prepare food with a RTAKII or RD-9?come on those are just as useless as an axe for that task

  • For firewood the trees are dead. He's stressed in other videos about cutting live trees only for survival. I don't have any problems with this.

  • I am not into knives at all; in fact, this is the first knife review of Nutnfancy that I have watched.

I am actually scared of knives because I have seen autopsy photos of people stabbed and cut with them.

But; this was an excellent video. I was very impressed. I didn't know there was so much to say about a knife. Excellent video Nutnfancy.

  • the best cure for your knife skittishness is to watch allot more of nutnfancy's knife videos, then buy a knife and use it allot

  • Damn straight. They're the tool from which all other tools were created. They are what separated us from the rest of the animal kingdom and dragged mankind out of the mud.

There is no more reason to fear them than there is reason to fear cars, fire or hammers.

  • omg nutn has copyright

  • The details of the steel are irrelevant if the quality control on the tempering process is poor. Perfect steel + poor tempering process = poor steel.

  • Guess being able to sharpen your own knife isn't important or a skill that is worth improving on...

  • another attempt to copy RAT.....another failed attempt to match their quality.......
