wrong bike for clip on bars!! i know cause i own one !!!! try a all day ride with them n you`ll know where i`m comin from!!!!!xr-1200 yes but on the nightster oh hell no!!
wow >>>>engine idle speed and fuel pressure on a fuel injected bike lol !!!!!!!!my nightster was going 12 20s now have 2 into 1 exhaust and am adding an 883 trans pulley(more reduction) awesome bike and you can control the idle by adjusting the IDLE screw on throttle body,,,,nosdivadyelrah lol
Just to let you all know... the idle is set that high to keep proper oiling to the heads. Low idle equals less oil to the top end. Your welcome... I work at Harley as a mechanic and ride a 67 shovel... trust me I know my facts.
How hard was it to remove the upper tree and install the bars? I just ordered a set and they should be here soon. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
No, it idles fast because H-D sets the computer to idle it at around 1,000 RPM. If you get a race tuner or replace the ECU, you can slow it down a bit.
That's right. H-D does set it to idle at around 1000 RPM. The fuel pump must maintain around 35 to 40 psi of fuel pressure to keep it running. In order to do that it has to idle higher. If the engine falls below 900 RPM the pressure will fall, the fuel pump will shut off and the bike won't run. Therefore, it idles higher because it's fuel injected.
Ok, ok. Fine. You're right and I'm wrong. I guess graduating at the top of my class at MMI and being a Harley mechanic for 4 years means nothing. What do I know? The customer is always right even when they don't know jack.
My mistake, it'll never happen again.
I gotta go now, one of our customers tried to set his idle too low to make his bike sound like a shovel head and now he wonders why it won't run. Hmmmmm.
yup.. good times.. makes you wonder what people are learning at all these tech schools and see so many shops with bad wraps cause customers have so many problems with repair work ..
ever notices when the bike is not running and you turn the ignition on and you hear the fuel pump trun on, and then turn off after a second or two.. thats cause its up to presure... now if you were to disconect the fuel line and squirt fuel everywhere.. the fuel pump will turn back on and continue to squit fuel... how is that possible if the motor is not running ?... of yea... becuause its not being controled my the motor.. its the ecm seeing a pressure drop and turning it back on...
and if the fuel pump was spacifically controled by the engine .. then it wouldnt turn on when we hit the ignition... and we all know it does " without the motor running"
and that is correct .. the connectors on the fuel line to fuel pump are spring loaded and upon disconection they shut closed giving the illusion there is no fuel pressure.however there still is,, a harleys fuel pump is no diferent then any other fuel pump in its function from a car or a motorcycle no matter the brand. just parts shaped different and in different locations.
@pianoman1969 i know its an old comment, but man i totally dig your style. i was gonna interject my pcIII still idles at 1000 with slip ons and k and n. my 07 1200c that is.. it has the computer and other stuff. would i gain a noticeable difference from a heavy breather and remap??? and ive tried the vrod and was not impressed; vmax is twice the bike? your opinion please as a hd wrench turner??? i can get an 03 max right now for 4. id spend that on parts and labor at hd 4 sure.
those are clip on handlebars. welcome to the cafe scene, all you have to do is measure your fork tube dia and go nuts. i think woodcraft makes some nice ones for the sportser frame. btw, highway pegs with clips? err.......
NOTHING is more uncomfortable then my race-ready Ducati. It was hot, rattled, made your arms go numb, my elbows and knees touched when riding -- it was perfect. I have been looking at the sporty for a couple months but was told there is "no way" you could put clip ons on it so thank you for proving it.
Looks good... I have had clip-ons on my 1200s for about a year now... and to anyone who was wondering.. it a very comfortable riding position. I actually like it better than the stock position. I have my gauges the same way.. i still have the risers and clamp on... I am going to go with a custom style head light that bolts to the lower triple, so I can remove the visor headlight and bolt the gauge bracket where the headlight visor bolted to... It'll look alot cleaner... looks great though..
Looks like stock exhaust, I can tell b/c I have one myself. He painted the pipes black. Maybe with hi-temp exhaust paint? Was considering the idea myself but I think I will just get some black exhaust wraps and wrap it up.
Hey real quick what kind of pipes are those? They sound like Rhinehart but wait Rhinehart doesn't make them in black. DId you paint them what are they?
How did you paint your exhaust? It looks very pretty!
I want to buy a black Nightster in Janury... The Problem is the color. The grey of the engine, the chrome of the exhause and the brightness of the black finish dosn`t harmonize. So I want to paint the exhauses or take mor chrome on it!
Hey Cococardenas..."Paying to much" and bragging about it is as gay as doing deep knee bends in a ripe cucumber patch. Why dont you go trailer your $45,000 chromed out coontail bagger to the local Starbucks and buy an overpriced shitty cup of coffee.
Lovely Mate, Looks like an old cafe racer with those clip-ons, Rear-sets would look ace on it too. Very sweet ride, well done. Check out my channel if you like the old skool shit !!! Cheers.
Hey ya, really like what you've done with this bike and thinkin about getting one but just a couple of questions..... 1. How comfortable is the riding position with the clip-ons, 2 Have you got it set up for a pillion and if so how long can they last on the back? Cheers.... and a very nice bike!
nice looking bike there! I got mine in black as well. Ireally like the black pipes.... if you dont mind asking....what did you do to them? did you paint them or change them? also.... love the highway pegs. I added forward controls to mine.

Do those clip-ons make the bike feel much heavier in traffic?

yea.. not so sure on that one.. the fuel pump runs off the ECM and battery... not the motors RPM two totally diferent systems there bud
