‘‘O we are cash-flow negative’’-The fact that there are no sales facts & figures does indicate: HOPE, might be a wishful thinking. The solution is trying to solve a problem which is not there - The ‘‘offer’’ in front of camera makes a good show; the viability of ‘‘Neck-Hinge Thing’’ as a business idea would have gone through the due diligence process. Most likely the CEO of Voyage – Air Guitar knew the idea would have not have withstand scrutiny of such processes.
‘‘the product that we have is an INCREDIBLY INNOVATIVE GUITAR, in fact that I think you could say: IT IS MOST INNOVATIVE GUITAR INTHIS CENTURY OF GUITAR BUILDING'' Marketing Gibberish – how can a GUITAR be a PRODUCT & at the same time be INNOVATIVE. How can a guitar innovate anything in any century? Education, Education, Education dear CEO.
‘‘There are 3,000,000 guitars sold just in United States every year’’. Potential size of the market 3,000,000/308,745,538 X 100 = 0.97%. What percentage of this market would want a foldable guitar? If you're a player 4 whom frequent travel is a fact of life, then a guitar with neck-hinge thing appears to be a practical, workable way to bring a full-size, full-scale guitar along for the ride. However, what is the % of jet-setting pickers who can't spend a day without a booming, big-bodied dread?
Aired on 08/23/09; (2 years, & 5 months ago) - ‘‘ridiculous’’ is; still be talking about valuation & correctness of decision - Financial facts & figures 2date ought 2 show-However, installing a ‘‘neck-hinge thing’’ 2 a guitar does not add ‘’any value’’, & relatively expensive process. “any fool can stand on the street and sell ten pound (dollars) notes all day for eight quid (buck).” – Sir Alan Sugar - The semi-celebrity endorsement does not generate sales/profit. Profit? Doubtful
@shawnki91 Well, it would of been a decent product with a decent outcome if the Cohen's actually licensed it to professionnal guitar manufacturers. Problem is the father's an absolutely greedy guy.
‘‘I am Jeff Cohen my son Josh & I have the most unique musical product to hit the market in many many years’’. Unlike the consumer products like potatoes, mobile phones, or beer. Guitar is an instrument which takes years of practice to learn how to use it. A guitar is an instrument not consumed by a mass market such as potatoes, or beer. Here the BUSINESS IDEA is to make money by producing a ‘‘foldable guitar’’ using a ‘‘PRODUCT’’ loosely termed as ‘‘the neck-hinge thing’’. Be clear what aim is?
‘‘..we are RAISING; $500k in this round of financing for 5% of the company’’ – NO YOU ARE NOT - In a reality television programmes like this, the featuring entrepreneurs pitch their ‘‘BUSINESS IDEAS’’ in order to ‘‘SECURE’’ investment finance from a panel of venture capitalist. You are basically ‘‘ASKING’’ for investment, not RAISING, if you could raise the money why would you be there! Now who is tripping ever since!
The guitar has to be balanced, with good bass notes but also good high notes. It has to be powerful, but this strength must not detract from the quality of the harmonics, the timbre, and the color. PABLO NERUDA in his ode to the guitar talks of: Slender pure line, of a sonorous heart. You are clarity truncated in flight: singing you survive, everything will pass except for your shape. Foldability does not make a great guitar
‘‘It is easier to make them to come to the table; if I demonstrated market acceptance of this PRODUCT’’. Unlike a pair of shoes or a mobile phone a guitar is not a PRODUCT but an INSTRUMENT. The origins of the guitar are quite vague, although there is evidence of similar instruments centuries before our time. ''A guitar is good when the high note sings and the bass laments.” Before using this instrument you have to learn how to play it. There is only a few David Gilmour or John Williams about.
i would just carry a guitar in its original case dont know why but i feel like having one of these destroying its value its like hey guys ready to play my cheap folding guitar he should of took the deal but he just wanted to be richer than anybody else
‘‘.. there is absolutely no reason why anybody that buys guitar today, wouldn’t want the flexibility, to be able to fold it in half..’’ – What are the reasons for having a guitar which fold in half? Is this the ‘‘Unique Selling Point’’? After years, 4 months, 13 days including the end date Aired time, it is rather pointless to discuss the correctness of the decision. Let see the validated sales figures for the product (neck-hinge thing). gui•tar (g -tär ) n. A musical instrument having a flat.
WoW. I can't believe he didnt take the deal! It's the connections and pull with the marketing + the money the sharks could have brought to the table that would rocket launched that product. I know first hand how hard it is to get a business off the ground with no capital and no connections. The first phase takes years and years, that they could have shaved off by giving half the (cashflow negative) company away. Dumb move.
‘‘I want make a lot of money building a great guitar’’ – Great in size? Great in sound? Great in FLEXIBILITY? Great in foldability? What do u mean by a ‘‘great guitar’’?
‘‘I am Jeff Cohen, my son Josh, & I have the most unique musical product to hit the market in many many years’’ – What is a ‘‘musical product’’? The guitar is a plucked string instrument & not a ‘‘musical product’’! – ‘‘musical’’ is an adjective & it means: Of or relating to music - U can say ‘‘musical car horn’’, or ‘‘Musical Products’’- “The value of a principle is in the number of things it will explain.’’ Ralph Waldo Emerson.
‘‘this is a product that has a 50% growth margin’’ = DOUBTFUL because: If LIST PRICE (electric guitar) = $100; DISCOUNT SALES PRICES = $80; WHOLESALE COST = $45 to $60 + FREIGHT-AVERAGE ABOUT 3% OF GROSS SALES across all product lines (a rule of thumb). INDEPENDENT REP MAY EARN $2.50 to $6.00. Earning by distributor = $12.50. Manufacturing (MAN) cost (parts & labour) = $20 to $30 [using standard (STD) MAN processes]. A guitar with Neck Hinge Thing does not use STD MAN processes.
‘‘I have invested a lot of time, a lot of money, and my personal reputation in this company; and I am afraid IF I don’t get get this financing in place quickly, ‘‘that’’ may all may be wasted.’’ – Notice that talking in facts and figures is not this CEO’s strong point ‘‘a lot of time’’ & ‘‘a lot of money’’ – Can you tell us how much? & your ‘‘personal reputation’’- irrelevant & immaterial. Lac of facts and figures is the main feature of ‘‘VAG’’
‘‘If the hinge is unique, and patented; there are lots of people that make guitar already – why not license the hinge idea to them? Sit at home; collect the royalty - which means they just send you the money every time they sell one.’’ The 627 Musical Instrument Manufacturers in the USA do not see any use for the Neck Hinge Thing (NHT) – NHT is useful only 2 a handful of student beginners who want to carry their instrument at all times so that they will not get out of the habit of practicing.
The luthiers or guitarreros, as they prefer to be called in Spain, are constant creators of harmony who hold so many secrets of the soul of the guitar in the slow rhythm of their daily lives. The guitar has to be balanced, with good bass notes but also good high notes. It has to be powerful, but this strength must not detract from the quality of the harmonics, the timbre, tone woods used, construction, internal bracking & the color. ‘‘the incredibly innovative guitar’’ = marketing gibberish.
If 'pro' is the opposite of 'con' what is the opposite of 'progress'? - ‘‘Regression’’ – that is why ‘‘CEO’’ of ‘‘VAG’’ returned to a former or less developed state, because he was a ‘pro’ ‘con man’ may be?
In 2005, Americans were the biggest consumers of musical instruments by far, making up 42.7 percent of the worldwide market. Japan was second at 15.6 percent. Americans purchased 3.4 million (3,400,000 ) guitars; the fretted instrument segment accounted for $1.4 billion in sales. Pianos followed with $1.1 billion in sales. Percussion instruments totaled $572.6 million in sales, wind instruments totaled $470.3 million, and stringed instruments such as violins and cellos totaled $68.4 million.
The leader of the stringed instrument segment of the industry was Fender Musical Instruments Corp. Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, privately held Fender was acquired by CBS Inc. in 1981 and taken private in 1985 by Bill Schultz and Bill Mendello.
The new management reinvigorated the company such that by 1995, the company boasted almost 50 percent of the guitar market. By 2009, Fender manufacturing facilities produced about 1,000 guitars a day. That year, the company posted sales of approximately $600 million, up from $200 million in 2006.
Nashville-based Gibson Guitar Corp. can trace its origins to the 1870s, when company namesake Orville Gibson opened a mandolin shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Second to Fender in stringed instruments, Gibson also manufactures drums and accessories. The company acquired Baldwin Piano in 2001, which had been in business since 1862. Baldwin has the largest market share of grand pianos in the United States. Since 1988, it has manufactured Wurlitzer pianos and, since 1995, Chickering grand pianos.
"Truth is the daughter of time, not of authority" - Galileo by Brecht. ''making millions''!, & the ''AUTHORITY''!? - may be ''ABC''- Grammatically there is no such thing as ‘‘an incredibly innovative guitar’’- U can have ‘‘an incredibly innovative guitar designer or technique....’’ a guitar cannot innovate.
@marijonelis you just got owned by your comment, because by the way, this guy is making millions now and they re-featured him in one of the episodes while demonstrating the amount of success he had. so before you call people dreamers, get your facts right. all businesses that ever became BIG started as a dream.. does Apple ring a bell?
Voyage-Air Guitar Inc; is the ASSIGNEE for ‘‘a hinge’’ commonly referred to as a ‘‘Neck-Hinge Thing’’ (NHT) - Patent No.: US 7,754,950 B2;Jul. 13, 2010 – Inventor: Harvey Leach. The concept is similar to a ‘‘hinged toilet seat unit’’ consisting of two parts one which is pined (bolted) onto a guitar body (toilet bowl) and the other to the guitar neck (the lid). The difference is ‘‘hinged toilet seat unit’’ is widely used; however, NHT has hardly any use.
After the ‘‘offer’’ in front of camera (makes a good show!); the viability of ‘‘Neck-Hinge Thing’’ (NHT) as a business idea would have gone through the ‘‘dew diligence’’ process. It is rather doubtful that ''NHT'' would have stood up to the scrutiny of such processes. It is most likely that the CEO of Voyage – Air Guitar was aware this.
Voyage-Air Guitar (VAG) has come up with the oldest Psychological Selling Trick – the dreaded ‘‘LIMITED EDITION’’. This works on ‘‘the scarcity principle’’. The guitar is called TransAxe Belair (TAB). VAG claims only 250 will be made! Apparently there are number (unknown!) of TABS available in the US, Japan/Europe. When place an order (four times so far) you get told: ‘‘sold out’’; then the option being put on a waiting list followed by an apology for the inconvenience
What is there to stop an instrument manufacturer to copy the design (with some variation), offered it to a jet-setting pickers who travels frequently, and call it ‘‘neck hinge bracket’’? And state ‘‘if Harvey Leach can be inspired by a ‘‘hinged toilet seat unit’’ and so can we.
SO STUPID.. this guy would NEVER sell as many guitars then if he had Kevin O'Leary on this side... some people just do;nt see a good oppertunity when there is one..and for the kid.. what a dumb shit... if it was MY father I would have pulled him aside and said, "Let's think about this, before you say something STUPID to the sharks".... so many people out there would die for a oppertunity like this, and some douche that is so narrow minded doesn't take advantage of it.. therefore I'M OUT!!!
@AndyinMTL take a band making their 1st record deal, they give away the house sometimes, why..to get a start to get their foot in the door , even if it means giving up publishing, because once they have a name & there is value in that, then they can command a better deal, but when you are dependeant on someone for getting you started, sometimes you have to give up more than you would like, then the next deal is yours..these guys don't understand this kind of thinking, too greedy
This idea is brilliant yet honestly it's 50% idea and 50% people behind it. They got a 50 on this and that's failing due to people. A father son team is not good enough to take on the whole guitar industry. I'd honestly buy this guys company for 1 million and give him a 5% royalty. He walks out rich and will collect checks for the rest of his life.

See, after watching Dragon's Den, there is one thing I hate about the Shark Tank. And it's the build up to each investment.
I don't want to know their backstory before they stand before the Sharks/Dragons. I don't want to hear about how they survived cancer and had to support their families, because it makes me sympathetic towards them and it makes me feel worse when they don't get their investment.
I know that's a personal thing. I just think the straight pitch is all I want to see.
@watchout8433 If you think it's boring watching people try to get money for their idea you've probably never had an idea worth persuing. I on the other hand have things I'd like to accomplish in my life, which unfortunately involves little pieces of paper to exchange hands. So seeing other people go through the steps and fail or succeed is actually quite interesting to me.
Hearing about the backstory of people who failed is like knowing about the full family life of the chicken I just ate.
@NateSean They wouldn't get the ratings if they left that part of the show out. Just like Undercover Boss. Who cares that you've been working at 7-11 for 21 years? The owner can't make a big gulp and that's funny. He's perfected management and the worker has perfected coffee making.
I would have bitten the hand off from kevin if he even offered me 10%..seriously. His distribution, contacts and experience was worth far more than 500.000 dollar. The worst business decision EVER!..seriously. I am so sad for them. What has happened to them actually..anybody knows this?
What a complete fucking moron, he just lost millions....bet he's fucking drinking himself to death in a gutter somewhere right now realizing what he's done, Kevin was right, this guy is a human tragedy
@ronwall3 How? Sure they were trying to take a huge chunk of the profits, but what would you rather have, a large piece of nothing or a small piece of something?
I had this idea for this hollographic device that you put on your arm to play a children's cardgame. but they wouldn't buy 25% in my company. because my idea costs $7.000 per unit to make and average kids don't have that kind of money, and also because sometimes the hollograms come to life and may try to kill people. ? but that was only 49% of them tops, hang on Dark Magician Girl just grabbed my 22 gage shotgun. i'll be right back.....!
Kevin is extremely harsh, but he is also an extremely clever businessman, very shrewd, to be sure. He really should've taken Kevin's deal. Kevin makes me laugh because of his nerve, but in many cases, he tells it like it is in the business world. It doesn't matter who you are, or where you come from; industry doesn't care about that. Industry cares if they can make money off you. That's the hard lesson I believe he's trying to teach.
Op of a life time--ALWAYS LOOK AT THE INVESTORS CONNECTIONS... They offered TV Promotions (QVC 200 Mil viewers n the US alone), the backing of a Billionaire. You will never get this op again! Sad...
So its been 12months, and I bet you are kicking yourself in the butt!
@TheSchola3000 ok sure that could be true just from episodes i have seen he said he was in like 2 times. and his bio said he has only invested 700.000 in total in like what 60 episodes prolly a lot less, i guess it is the whole no one wears fubu
hahah the bald guy tells everyone who doesnt take his offer " u r greedy". Thats like a liar tellin someone "u lie".
They did a good job by not taking that offer, never give up 51%. There are a lot of guys who will invest in this. Its a great idea. Everybody guitar player, me included would want to buy this kinda guitar.
@JoePescisBoss uum actually i can tell your not business minded. that was probably the best offer ever. The bald guy (kevin) had connections with patenting and licensing products he sold over 3.2 billion dong that.. The other guy had made billions in commercial marketing which is a 2nd connection. Robert has the power of created top internet businesses for the product. all 3 of them owning %51 is toooooo fair!! his product would had made millions!!!!! idoit! smh
@TheSchola3000 No, u dont get that many ppl watch that show. And I bet u that a lot of people who also know the business wanna invest and they gonna make def a better offer. Those guys on that show r not the only ones who can do business.
@JoePescisBoss ok but the point of the story is we're not talking about other people we're talking about shark tank the show . the guitar guy was being greedy. he wanted to own most of his idea without the right finance and right connections with out giving the investors a fair deal. Everybody has to have a piece of the pie if there gonna pitch in to get it. thats just how business works. Like I said your not business minded. smh! Its called sacrifice for the better!
These people don't understand the guitar industry. Even if you did want to license the technology as a business strategy, you'd need to spend years establishing market reputation and demand first.
And nothing gets actual music-lovers running in the other direction like an "As Seen On TV" logo.
Partnering with the big guitar companies sounds great, but not all it's cracked up to be. Ned Steinberger couldn't get any big company to buy his headless basses and guitars. Then his own small company hit it big in the 80s — and he sold to Gibson, who presided over the brand's ultimate decline.
I don't know why people are saying he's got 100% of nothing. As far as I can tell, he's still selling his guitars and is still president of the company. Greed was on both sides, let's not forget that. Would you give away the rights to something you spent years working on? I thought the 50/50 deal was fair, his product worked, although the part where he said he had negative cash flow killed it.

A ridiculous valuation, and a pretty terrible product. They passed up on the deal that could have changed their lives.

Foldability does not make a great guitar
dragonsdenish 2 months ago
‘‘It is easier to make them to come to the table; if I demonstrated market acceptance of this PRODUCT’’. Unlike a pair of shoes or a mobile phone a guitar is not a PRODUCT but an INSTRUMENT. The origins of the guitar are quite vague, although there is evidence of similar instruments centuries before our time. ''A guitar is good when the high note sings and the bass laments.” Before using this instrument you have to learn how to play it. There is only a few David Gilmour or John Williams about.

‘‘.. there is absolutely no reason why anybody that buys guitar today, wouldn’t want the flexibility, to be able to fold it in half..’’ – What are the reasons for having a guitar which fold in half?

Dumb move.

Lac of facts and figures is the main feature of ‘‘VAG’’
dragonsdenish 3 months ago

‘‘the incredibly innovative guitar’’ = marketing gibberish.
dragonsdenish 3 months ago

Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, privately held Fender was acquired by CBS Inc. in 1981 and taken private in 1985 by Bill Schultz and Bill Mendello.
dragonsdenish 3 months ago
The new management reinvigorated the company such that by 1995, the company boasted almost 50 percent of the guitar market. By 2009, Fender manufacturing facilities produced about 1,000 guitars a day. That year, the company posted sales of approximately $600 million, up from $200 million in 2006.
dragonsdenish 3 months ago
Nashville-based Gibson Guitar Corp. can trace its origins to the 1870s, when company namesake Orville Gibson opened a mandolin shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Second to Fender in stringed instruments, Gibson also manufactures drums and accessories. The company acquired Baldwin Piano in 2001, which had been in business since 1862. Baldwin has the largest market share of grand pianos in the United States. Since 1988, it has manufactured Wurlitzer pianos and, since 1995, Chickering grand pianos.

I just think the straight pitch is all I want to see.

watchout8433 5 months ago
@watchout8433 If you think it's boring watching people try to get money for their idea you've probably never had an idea worth persuing. I on the other hand have things I'd like to accomplish in my life, which unfortunately involves little pieces of paper to exchange hands. So seeing other people go through the steps and fail or succeed is actually quite interesting to me.
Hearing about the backstory of people who failed is like knowing about the full family life of the chicken I just ate.

I just bought one of these guitars. It's great.
Partnering with the big guitar companies sounds great, but not all it's cracked up to be. Ned Steinberger couldn't get any big company to buy his headless basses and guitars. Then his own small company hit it big in the 80s — and he sold to Gibson, who presided over the brand's ultimate decline.
