I'm a bit worried that Cameron is so ignorant about drugs. I guess its really not top of his priorities thought and it would hurt him politically to admit to any less ignorant an understanding of drugs and drug use.

For anyone tat does not already realise, many illegal drugs are less harmful than legal drugs. Most young people are well aware of that and do not need educating.

you GET PEOPLE CLEAN ,, by giving them FREE HEROIN. & getting them out of the criminal situation they fall into.. LOOK AT THE SWISS MODEL. ,, after the FIRST successful trial . they initiated CLINICS all over Switzerland..

very patronising of him to claim that people use drugs due to lack of education. i guess the millions of moderate alcohol drinkers in this country are thickos who don't know the risks as well? after all, alcohol is OBJECTIVELY more harmful than most of the illegal drugs. it turns out that people enjoy using drugs, and for the majority of them, their use is not problematic. this is particularly true among cannabis users.

Notice how he only talked about HEROIN to make it clear he wasnt going do anything. And warning people on the dangers of drugs ? Have the government not already been doing this for 40 years now and it hasnt worked and the drug problem in the UK has got WORSE !! I dont think drugs are the problem in the UK its MPs who wont listen to people who know what they are talking about who have been employed by the government to tell them the facts but they are ignored, so why are they employed ?

The things that keep people on drugs, is how crap this country is - fuel prices, house prices, being told what you can and can't do. Young people (and many older) don't stand a chance of ever getting off the breadline, or owning their own homes. Sort that out and maybe things would get better......

Oh, Mr Cameron, what a fool you are? Have you any idea what effect poverty has illicit drug use. I'll give you a hint. It's not a positive one. Maybe it's about time you realised, we're not "all in this together"! Some are a lot further in than others.

Also what about non-dependant users, like the majority of cannabis users? How do you plan to "change" the fact that some people just enjoy taking certain drugs, often with no risk to themselves, apart from the potential criminal record of course?

For long-term users of cannabis - this herb IS their treatment. This backward government is just ruining peoples' lives. It's criminal.

So is that a yes that the Government "should initiate a discussion" on this subject?

That's all Julian Huppert called for. We need a decent, independent cost-benefit analysis of our drug policies to help move the debate onto an evidence-based, (rather than tabloid-based) footing.

@balthazar08 Sorry mate but this will never happen !If the government initiate a discussion the facts will ruin our MPs reputation with the British public as the real harms will come to light eg criminal record ,policy effectiveness and cost to the tax payer . And if the FACTS are used for a base on drug laws cannabis and some other drugs will have to made legal of decriminalised and MPs dont want this for some strange reason .Cameron will only speak up when hes not in power because hes corrupt
