@stalli1973 Ballesteros goes down as perhaps the gutsiest player ever - with the possible exception of Walter Hagen. Trevino was a phenom. Imagine if he had enjoyed another 20-30 yds off the tee! I'm beginning to wonder if Tiger will have the fire, ego, control & finesse to regain winning form sufficient to capture 4 or 5 more majors. A tough task at 35. The two greatest assets to the growth & success of professional golf were Hagen & Arnold Palmer.
@fs1natra JWN's game, aside from massive drives that overpowered courses built in the 19th or early 20th centuries, & his putting mastery on fast greens, was, as I say, just so-so. Nothing exceptional. He chose his battlegrounds. And one reason that he won more majors is the fact that he played in more of them. In their first 20 years as PGA pros, Palmer played in only 68 majors; Player, in 69. Nicklaus competed in all 80. I don't hate Nicklaus; I just don't worship him as you do.
If Jack had been in the position of Tiger, Els, or Mickelson yesterday, he would have won. He sometimes was outplayed, but never out thought or out nerved.
No telling how far these two could hit the ball today with our equiptment. I usede the old titleist many years ago. Most people have heard of the difference in distance, but you dont hear much about the slicing and hooking problems. The ball is much straighter now.
Notice how long these two stand over their putts before they swing. They are patient and wait until their bodies are really ready to calmly stroke it. They double and triple check the location of the hole. So many rush it and their distance is off.
Palmer was on Tour 7 yrs & anyone with brains knows you hit the ball better in your 30s vs. 20s, so he should've been better from tee to green than a rookie Jack. More to golf than "tee to green". Don't pity Arn's putting in the '62 US Open since he lived 30 min. from Oakmont & could practice the greens anytime. He got beat & you know I could go on about the times Jack continued to beat him. Jack really overpowered courses in his late 30s and 40s.
Arnold: 7 majors, 10 2ds, 19 top 3s, 26 top 5s, 38 top 10s from age 25 to 47 - 62 PGA wins Jack: 18 majors, 19 2ds, 46 top 3s, 56 top 5s, 73 top 10s from age 20 to 58 - 73 PGA wins Arnold was a no-show at '64, '67, '71 Opens - knew he couldn't win. Arnold: 1 US Am win Jack: 2 US Am wins Other Nicklaus-authored books: "The Full Swing" "Golf & Life" "Play Better Golf" (vols 1 & 2) Other Palmer-authored books: "Arnold Palmer's Golf Book: Hit It Hard" "My Game & Yours"
Jack didn't invent "the golden bear" - an Australian writer did. Pretty egotistical of Arnold to allow "the king" to continue, much less the army of fans who treated Jack with disrespect. Also he was noted for saying, "I'm going to take a Nicklaus" when going to the bathroom - real respectful. But since he was screwing around on Winnie, what do you expect?
WALRU, this "debate" is over - you lost & you know it. Why not read a book instead of talking about your "library".
Arnie sure did have more shot than Jack ever dreamed of that's why Jack's record in the Open is better...he used fewer shots, which is what you should do in golf.
Yeah...in '81, Jack's son was in a bad car wreck and Jack found out shortly before teeing off but was told to go ahead.
in all my years that i have followed golf i have never heard anyone say a bad word about jack nicklaus ...except you.he is a total gentleman,a family man,a great winner as well as great in defeat.i follow a lot of sports but if there is one guy i admire more than anyone its jack nicklaus.i also like arnold palmer and they have total respect for one another.

Nicklaus was one of the most ponderous turtles to ever slow the game of golf to a mind-numbing crawl. He won because he had preternatural 29 thighs that enabled him to overpower courses from the tee, while his near-narcoleptic-long crouch over a putt (in what was said to resemble a polar bear peeling a grape) proved effective on fast greens. He made the game a yawning bore, whereas Arnold Palmers athletic aggressive go-for-broke style made golf as exciting as a contact sport.
Arnie was & IS "King." Nicklaus is a 2nd-rate player with a 1st rate EGO who overpowered carefully-chosen courses with 29-inch thighs. From 100 yds in he was one of the worst on the PGA Tour. He putted well because he took 5 minutes over each putt. If Lema had not died, Ohio Fats would have won maybe 14 majors. Those he did, he was damned lucky. Pebble in '72 #10 4th round. Lost ball '63 Masters, found at the last moment. '62 Open. Palmer's putt hangs on the lip & doesn't fall. Lucky Jack.

The only level Nicklaus could take golf to would be descending. Flying right elbow, high left heel, interlocking grip & horribly ponderous play his swing was absurd & his style a bore. His monumental Teutonic ego led to rudeness evident in his inconsiderate slow pace. He had half the shots (poor from 100 yds in) but overpowered courses (& now whines about long hitters!) A phony. Named himself the Golden Bear. What a fraud. Also, a control freak. Arnie was authentic. The best. The King.

Youtube erased the inch marks. Jack's thighs were abnormally huge - a story in itself - which allowed him to overpower courses. Pare back his power to that of normally-built touring pros & he would have won perhaps a third of the tournaments he did. He came along when courses were still at 1930s-era length & he simply overpowered them. He WAS a superb putter on fast greens - the result of growing up a privileged boy playing Scioto CC. He had everything handed to him by an adoring Papa.

Actually, Nicklaus was an alien centipede. If you watch the original Men in Black closely, you'll notice him in the background hitting an entire bucket's worth of golf balls at once - something he often did to warm up before a major tournament. It's why you'll notice on his career record, he always skipped the PGA's Terminex Open. Also, Trevino? You remember Lee's Fleas? Lee actually was one. These are little known facts & I am risking it to clue you in, but there you have it.

In his prime? Arnie beat Jack in the: 60 Open by 2 shots, 62 Masters by 11, 62 British Open by 29 strokes, 64 Masters by 7, 64 US Open by 9, 66 US Open by 7, 66 PGA by 5, & the 69 US Open by 20 strokes. Jack was cut in the 63 Open (Arnie tied for 1st); the 67 Masters (Arnie was 4th); & the 68 PGA (Arnie was 2nd); Arnie also kicked Jacks butt in many lesser events ala the 62 Phoenix Open by 12 shots. Their first 10 years as pros: Arnie won 45 events, Jack, 36. Arnie dominated. The KING!

Palmer was the pioneer who did all the grunt work 55-62 (& beyond) paving the way for a much privileged & spoiled frat-brat like Fat Jack to comfortably pick & choose his sites, etc. without worrying about money. When one considers context: what Palmer won, when, & how vs. what Nicklaus did, Palmer's achievements - however less statistically in eventual majors - far surpass those of Nicklaus. By far. Jack had EVERY advantage: wealth, a doting father, youth, & yet 1st 10 yrs, AP outperformed him.
Seven of Palmer's first 10 years ('55 - '61 inclusive) he didn't have to face Jack. He had an aging Hogan and Snead and part-time Player to go against. Geez.

To answer the 2nd part of your query: Bubba & JB arent winning majors because A: EVERYBODY hits it long now (causing Jackie to whine about tee length as his records are smashed one-by-one. Boo-hoo.) & B: When Jack turned pro, courses were at 1930s-era lengths with hazards he flew over + many paltry muni layouts played. Today, courses are stretched to 7500+ (even 8k+ plush yds) with hazards strategically placed to catch Bubba & JB. Whole different ball game. But you know this. Nice try.
Typically, you miss the point. The courses have been stretched, hazards repositioned, & fairways lush with less roll. In Jack's day, he simply overpowered their puny lengths. He could also putt. The rest of his game was mediocre. Lee Trevino summed up Nicklaus' game: "If Jack had to play from my tee shots he's be back in Columbus running the family drugstores." Period. Amen.
Your dislike for Jack clouds facts, but live in your dreamworld. You do add comic relief. He handed it to the AMATEUR Nicklaus in '60. Head-to-head, & otherwise ('62 U.S. Open, '65 Masters, '66 Masters, '66 Open, '67 U.S. Open, etc.), Jack beat Palmer more & you know it - & got into his head after the '62 U.S. Open. Oh - 6 shots in the '64 Masters & 5 shots in the '69 U.S. Open. Tying for 1st isn't a win & who loses a 7-shot lead in 9 holes like the '66 U.S. Open? Get your facts straight.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have my facts straight, bub. You don't. '66 Open, Arnie beat Jack decisively. I never said "tying for first is a win." I pointed out that while Arnie finished tied for 1st in the 62, 63, & 66 Opens, Fat Jack missed the cut in 63 & finished 7 back in 66. I DO dislike Nicklaus, a rude & arrogant player in his youth undeserving of respect & truth be told, he hasn't changed much. FYI: I walked with Winnie, Amy & Peggy each hole practice thru playoff in the 66 Open, so don't presume to lecture me.
And AMATEUR Jack beat defending champ Palmer by 5 in the '61 U.S. Open. Then beat him in the playoff the next year as a ROOKIE. I could go on and on...Oh, how did Winnie and Peggy act since their husband and father was sleeping around, huh? Do tell.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Your claims are baseless, arrogant, judgmental, rude, & offensive. You should be ashamed of yourself, but typical of a Nicklaus fanatic, you have no shame. I knew Winnie, Amy, & Peggy, & they had nothing but love & respect for Arnold who was and is a terrific husband, father & friend to his respective family members.
Newsflash: Nicklaus was only nominally an amateur from the age of 16. His sugar daddy underwrote his lessons, equipment, clothes, travel, entry fees, play, meals, motels, spending cash & more as he crossed the U.S. playing pro & am events with a plusher life than leading Tour pros. "Amateur" Jack MCd in the 57 Open (Arn, too but beat him by 8); In 58 Arn beat him by 5. Jack MCd in 59. Arn finished 5th. Nicklaus regarded himself the best golfer in the world while at Ohio State. Egomaniac.
You are one pathetic loser who has no knowledge of the game nor its players. Damn! The old saying, "you can't argue witha sick mind" definitely applies here, thus I am quitting while ahead. Be sure to brush up on your golf history, because you don't know anything about it. Wow!
Nice try, but my posted facts, stats, & numbers are accurate which is why you are tossing in the towel. Jack was John Daly, sober. He bombed drives past hazards, leg-muscled shots out of rough,& could putt fast greens. He won 10 of his majors in the relatively fallow '67-'76 period. He is overrated, his rep sustained by obtuse, fawning sycophants like you. Pardon me, but THAT's pathetic.
Just because Palmer couldnt hack it anymore, you post half-truths at best. Brush up on the real facts of the game, because you know very little. Your argument is ludicrous at best and you support it with inconsistent statements and bullsh*t. As I said earlier, you dont know much, but your posts are good, comic relief. Maybe if Palmer hadnt been screwing around on Winnie, he would have played better.
You're a rather boorish dolt. Your list is ludicrous & shows how very little critical analysis your feeble brain can manage. The diminutive Player was no match for Jack's booming length. Floyd: 9 of his 13 wins - late 70s & later. Jacklin: only 3 US wins & 1 British Open. BFD. Trevino beat Jack like a pinata! Weiskopf: 1major. A psych-job from the time Jack 1st beat him at Ohio State. Miller, the 2-season wonder? Please! Irwin & Watson: a handful & less of wins b4 late 70s. You know NOTHING.
What happened to Arn? Two things: 1. His putting went south. I watched him shoot 68 @ Pebble in the '72 Open & tee-to-green he was impeccable - never outside of 15 ft of the cup. He should have easily shot 62. #2: Mark McCormack. Jack broke with Mac & returned to golf. Arn stayed loyal & thus ran hell-to-breakfast building the Tour & an empire @ the cost of his career record. Palmer was a better player than Nicklaus, but coming from deprivation, was intent on making $ more than records.
Your ersatz debating skills are legendary. You introduce a premise about Palmer, albeit an odd one, throw in a few stats, then realize you can't support your own argument, thus tear down Nicklaus thru unsubstantiated, subjective drivel. Then you make comments on other players of their era and the current era to cloud matters. Why not forge a debate in support of your player and back it up? But then you would have to convey an argument that makes sense to begin with.
As for Tiger? About 6 weeks ago, he was asked what ERA he would like to have played in. He said the NICKLAUS era. Tiger knows that was the time where the collusion of greatest # of champions with the PROVEN ability to win fell.
As I said earlier, this debate is closed & you lost. Thanks & have a good day.
Please! You attempt yet another sleight-of-hand via your own subjective slant on Tigers remark. Like Jack, your ego knows no bounds. More likely, Woods would have loved to play Nicklaus in Jacks prime for the sheer pleasure of routinely beating him in order to settle the debate for obtuse whiney sycophants like you who still suck up to a 2nd-class overrated player whose overall skills dont merit his carrying Tigers bag. Nice try, retsam, but typically lame. You lost the debate days ago.
"Durr." Just about the type of unintelligible comment one would expect from someone whose favorite videos are Heineken beer commercials & ones titled "Young & Weedy." And you dare infer that I'm drinking and toking? Pathetic.
you have a big chip on your shoulder and an even bigger in your your brain, your comments and the way you TRY to put your point across is to me like a 6 year old TRYING to express things like a 12 year old ( dont forget the 6 year old has that same chip on his shoulder)..thats why cockhead i typed" DUR" its language i knew you would understand PS: you are also trying to be intelegent by the way you TRY expressing your thoughts YOU ARE FAILING

@biunyia Your illiteracy is as rampant as ever. The word is "petulant." My guess is it was an insult to Jack...a heckling sign so to speak. The fans didn't like him knocking their beloved Arnie off the pedestal. The "pooh" most likely is a negative reference to his "golden bear" nickname - "pooh bear" instead. Again, just a guess.
Regarding driving, Players such as Nicklaus to Woods today had to battle with the same accuracy vs distance ratio with repect to their scoring. With clubs that go less distance such as the persimmons used in days of Nicklaus, their strokes had to produce more power at the expense of accuracy because the distance the clubs are travelling less distance so the accuracy needed is lessened but clubs have given players the ability to where they need to tone down their stroke patterns for more control
No crap they had a lot of power! Look at those golf swings...! People don't realize. And Jack's swing got less dynamic the more he focused on his "head still" junk. Greg Norman said Jack could get it out to 360 today.
"Less dynamic"? And how is the "head still" idea "junk"? It was the primary swing thought of the greatest player who ever lived. Couldn't have been too bad. And he focused on it since he was 10 years old.
The ball wasn't smaller then. The British ball used to be slightly smaller, but the American one has been 1.68 inches forever. Certainly throughout Jack's and Arnie's careers and up to today. The ball has changed in many ways other than its size, though.
Cracks me up--this is one of the few tournaments in which Jack used the putter he called "White Fang," a center-shafter Bullseye that was painted white. Gosh, if he'd had an Odyssey with an insert, or maybe one of those $300 Scotty Camerons, he really might have been good...

Tee-to-green, Arnie outplayed Nicklaus in the '62, '67, and '72 Opens, only to lose to Jack on the greens. Jack's swing, from its interlocking fingers-grip, flying right elbow, upright arc and left heel high off the ground, was far from classic, but as a power thrust, it worked. Where he excelled, was his Teutonic hauteur and Nietzschean will on the greens. Jack's putting defeated Palmer in the Opens of '62, '67, and '72. If Palmer had putted half as well as Jack, those titles were all his.
Well, Tigey Tige's working on it--but if he gets there, it's not gonna be against people like Palmer, Watson, Miller, Trevino, et al. Too bad. Not Tiger's fault, for sure.
between 1961 and 1986 ther were 100 majors played jack ,player, palmer, trevino, watson and seve won 48 of them, jack won 18 of those and ran second 19 tmes, he ruled the golden era of golf..thats why he will always be remembered as the greatest ever
Nice of him to reassure British viewers that the BBC will soon be showing these great events in colour (or should I say color?)

No telling how far these two could hit the ball today with our equiptment. I usede the old titleist many years ago. Most people have heard of the difference in distance, but you dont hear much about the slicing and hooking problems. The ball is much straighter now.

They were made from balata and smaller than todays golf balls.

Notice how long these two stand over their putts before they swing. They are patient and wait until their bodies are really ready to calmly stroke it. They double and triple check the location of the hole. So many rush it and their distance is off.

WALRU, time to set you straight (again):
Palmer was on Tour 7 yrs & anyone with brains knows you hit the ball better in your 30s vs. 20s, so he should've been better from tee to green than a rookie Jack. More to golf than "tee to green". Don't pity Arn's putting in the '62 US Open since he lived 30 min. from Oakmont & could practice the greens anytime. He got beat & you know I could go on about the times Jack continued to beat him. Jack really overpowered courses in his late 30s and 40s.

Nicknames:

WALRU11 2 years ago
theres only 1 king between these 2 and it aint palmer-nicklaus different class.
bigpaulothe1st 2 years ago

The best. The King.
WALRU11 2 years ago
"29 thighs"? Wow. Most people just have two.

WALRU11 2 years ago
Ha ha! Speaking of centipedes, maybe if Palmer kept his in his pants more often while in his prime, he would have beaten Nicklaus more frequently.

WALRU11 2 years ago

Nice try.
WALRU11 2 years ago
Yeah...Bubba and JB...a couple of real intimidating players.
sretsam68 2 years ago

Open? Get your facts straight.
sretsam68 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
I have my facts straight, bub.
WALRU11 2 years ago
And AMATEUR Jack beat defending champ Palmer by 5 in the '61 U.S. Open. Then beat him in the playoff the next year as a ROOKIE. I could go on and on...Oh, how did Winnie and Peggy act since their husband and father was sleeping around, huh? Do tell.

WALRU11 2 years ago
Egomaniac.

sretsam68 2 years ago

Maybe if Palmer hadnt been screwing around on Winnie, he would have played better.
sretsam68 2 years ago
WALRU11 2 years ago
What happened to Arnold during those years, huh?????
sretsam68 2 years ago
What happened to Arn? Two things: 1. His putting went south. I watched him shoot 68 @ Pebble in the '72 Open & tee-to-green he was impeccable - never outside of 15 ft of the cup. He should have easily shot 62. #2: Mark McCormack. Jack broke with Mac & returned to golf. Arn stayed loyal & thus ran hell-to-breakfast building the Tour & an empire @ the cost of his career record. Palmer was a better player than Nicklaus, but coming from deprivation, was intent on making $ more than records.
WALRU11 2 years ago
Your ersatz debating skills are legendary. You introduce a premise about Palmer, albeit an odd one, throw in a few stats, then realize you can't support your own argument, thus tear down Nicklaus thru unsubstantiated, subjective drivel. Then you make comments on other players of their era and the current era to cloud matters. Why not forge a debate in support of your player and back it up? But then you would have to convey an argument that makes sense to begin with.
sretsam68 2 years ago
As for Tiger? About 6 weeks ago, he was asked what ERA he would like to have played in. He said the NICKLAUS era. Tiger knows that was the time where the collusion of greatest # of champions with the PROVEN ability to win fell.
As I said earlier, this debate is closed & you lost. Thanks & have a good day.
sretsam68 2 years ago

Regarding driving, Players such as Nicklaus to Woods today had to battle with the same accuracy vs distance ratio with repect to their scoring. With clubs that go less distance such as the persimmons used in days of Nicklaus, their strokes had to produce more power at the expense of accuracy because the distance the clubs are travelling less distance so the accuracy needed is lessened but clubs have given players the ability to where they need to tone down their stroke patterns for more control
mtb2004uk 3 years ago
I still think Nicklaus and to a little lesser degree Palmer had a lot of power. As much as any of the players today.
There are guys hitting the ball 300+ yards today but I think technology has a lot to do with that.
Nicklaus and Palmer are slamming the ball out there using old persimmons wood drivers and a smaller golf ball.
Great video.
Bamruff62 3 years ago
No crap they had a lot of power! Look at those golf swings...! People don't realize. And Jack's swing got less dynamic the more he focused on his "head still" junk. Greg Norman said Jack could get it out to 360 today.
paulski5 3 years ago
"Less dynamic"? And how is the "head still" idea "junk"? It was the primary swing thought of the greatest player who ever lived. Couldn't have been too bad. And he focused on it since he was 10 years old.

He did OK for sure. Jack is very talented. I am still skeptical of still heads 100%.

The ball wasn't smaller then. The British ball used to be slightly smaller, but the American one has been 1.68 inches forever. Certainly throughout Jack's and Arnie's careers and up to today. The ball has changed in many ways other than its size, though.
