  • We used to have it, (on 45 when it first cnme out/. I still have 33 :)

  • Mel's version hit #22 in Billboard, 3-29-86. Great cover version, though. God bless!

  • I don't know why I'm writing this... My grandpa just passed away a few hours ago... i didn't see him much during the last few years and didn't get a chance to say goodbye but I have fond memories of him singing this song and slapping his leg to the rhythm... I searched just to see if I could find anyone singing it. Thank you so much for this, Buck.

  • @rljcybernaut Thanks so very much and I am sorry for you lost. Remember, it is our lost not theirs.

  • I am from the town the song was wrote about and remember Shoestring Massey. He always had a smile ...

  • @LauraMichelle514 Thanks cool thanks. My Mom's maiden name was Massey so that is interesting.

  • i used to listen to this song with my dad when I was a little girl.. ty !! loved it!! Keep doing what you are doing!

  • @darkenedvelvet You welcome. Thank you.

  • Nice sound!

  • @guitargodmister Thanks.

  • Thank you!!! Incredible childhood memory....I've been lookin for this song forever...u rock!

  • @todd0081 Thanks you I had been too.

  • A Hogan wrote it? I KNEW I liked that song ;)

  • Shoestring's real name was William Massey and he lived in Bruceton, Tennessee. I met him in 1987 during a "railroad days" festival in Bruceton when I was a reporter for an area newspaper. He was a real character. He was in a nursing home at the time, but one of the staff brought him to the festivities and I talked to him a bit. I don't think Mel McDaniels wrote that song actually. There was a songwriter from Bruceton, can't recall his name but "Hogan" was part of it, that actually wrote it.

  • @jazzbofandango Thanks so much info, I always thought it was a great song.

  • I heard this Song every single day of My Life at least one time all through High school in Mannford Oklahoma while playing Foosball and shooting pool at the Q spot in the 80's. I can't remember the owners name but he played this song every day at least once. Thanks for the Memory flood. LOL

  • Man this was my grandfather and my favorite song.

  • Thanks very much.

  • i could listen to this guy all night!

    BRILLIANT.

  • Great Job! Shoestring was my fathers uncle, so this song is special to me. While some of the family still lives in West Tennessee, Shoestring died in 1988. According to his gravestone he was 101 years old, but we think that was wrong. Thanks for sharing.

  • Wow, thanks very much. I didn't know it was a real person. I posted a newer version of this month will send a link.

  • Wow I didn't know Shoestring was a real person either. Thanks for sharing that. Ive always loved the song.

  • The last time I remember seeing him was in the 1970's. I was young and I lived in Indiana, so I didn't know him very well. There was an interview on local television before his death. He was very proud of the song. I wish I could find a copy of that video.

  • Geezermassey, I'm from Bruceton, TN and I remember Shoestring very well. Just curious if you are living in the area. I always did love this song. I even had the "Shoestring" shirt when this came out. Hard to believe that it's been over 20 years ago.

  • I live in Indiana, but I still have family in Huntingdon. Great Song.

  • that's great! you're the king.

  • Thanks so much appreciate that very much.

  • Awesome...my father in law breaks out in this song from time to time and I have been trying to find it forever...I didn't know who sang it or what the actual title was. Great job Buck.

  • Thanks very much, you will notice in the info. I had the same problem although I did know the title and singer just couldn't find it anywhere but my son finally found it.

  • Great Tune from 1986 (I think). Even us yankee city slickers remember it! Thanks for posting it.

  • Thanks very much.

  • I Googled this song trying to find the writing credit which is a man last name of Hogan. He and I are from the same area, Carroll County Tennessee. He and Shoe String (yes, he was a real person just as described in the song) were from Hollow Rock/Bruceton sister towns in the east part of the county. These are very small towns and everyone knew Shoe String and the nursing home he went to live in is Life Care in Bruceton, TN. This area is dead center in the middle of West Tennessee near Jackson

  • Thanks very much for the history.
