  • this was the best game ever

  • I've got this, but the music doesn't want to play. any ideas?

  • Tie Fighter II (with optional joystick included) would be a marvellous idea for a future PC game! FTW!

  • I wish Lucas and his team of monkeys would just herry up and re-release these games with better graphics and sound, instead of bloody The force uninspired of whatever its called.

    Its LONG overdue.

  • @imperialpod Yeah, they could earn a lot of money with very "simple" games. Just use the old TIE-Fighter missions and the 10 year old X-Wing Alliance graphics and you have top selling game.

  • @imperialpod I hear you. And best of all, LucasArts, DON'T USE THESE CRAPPY RED-BOOK LOOPING MUSIC USED IN THE 1998 VERSION! Use the music used in the earlier versions that change to the enviornments. Oh, and make it online, where people can go online and do a match, in teams

    X-WING: JEDI

    TIE-FIGHTER: SITH

Plus, vehicles from the prequel trilogy.

  • more problems..... when i try going online on x-wing vs tiefighter flight school a message comes up saying: "warning:connection failure!

make sure your windows95 network settings are properly configured for this type of game". helllpp.

  • Errant Venture is the only way to play XvT online

  • i found it never mind thx anyway :)

  • hardwarUK where can i find the patch ur talking about cause mt tie fighter doesnt work on xp?

  • Just google 'Tie Fighter XP patch' and choose the Lucas Files site.

  • when i try playing tie fighter i click play now but a box comes up with 2 options: install now and cancel, i click istall now and another box comes up and it has a list of things and it says pass or fail next to them and the only option is install direct x or cancel, so i click intall direct x, when its done it closes. so i open tie fighter again and clikc play now but it still comes up. any suggestions?

  • I don't know, that sounds like the windows version, and i've never used it.

  • I wish this game could be remade! But they would probly not bother to put in the power share thingy so your lazers can recharge, but your speed/sheilds would suffer, or that wonderful target assist where it flashes green to show it will hit. anyway grate game, deserves a remake

  • Just wondering if anyone can help. I love this game and can't get it working on the XP. I have the X-wing Collectors Series. I have x-wing and x-wing vs tie fighter flight school working fine, but with Tie Fighter I'm having problems. It comes up with a msg saying download directX 5.2 drivers and i go to install now which is on the game, but it doesn't do anything. what am i doing wrong guys?

  • i have the same problem and i dont know what to do

  • I have XP Pro 2.8ghz dual core NVidia 8600 and alI had to do was set it in win95 compatability an it played like a dream! There is a patch to allow the game to work in XP in hardware mode too! Glorious hardware driven 640x480!!!

  • i'm assuming you're NOT talking about the DOS version, because it's not going to be pretty at all that way.

  • No, it's the collector's series, upgraded for Win95 and video cards, with a patch so you can play the gam in XP in hardware mode, which it wouldn't do in XP with modern video cards.

  • there's two collectors versions that I know of. I have two discs here to even prove it. One of them mentions windows and the other doesn't. The one that says windows came in a set of games rather than being stand alone.

  • Well, I am in the UK and my copy is called 'Star Wars X-Wing Collector Series. It includes on 2 CD's SW X-Wing, SW Tie-Fighter and X-Wing Vs Tie-Fighter Flight School. The back of the box say the games have been retuned to take advantage of Win98. The patch I mentioned is a third party patch. My CD's don't mention DOS or Windows.

  • how do u set it in win95 compatibility?

  • In XP, right click on .exe then choose 'compatability' tab, then click box to put tick in and choose 'Windows 95'

  • @HardWarUK Just DL TFTC if you can find it. It's much harder than vanilla Tie Fighter though.

  • I found it (the mac collector's cd, without textures but with better music) on ebay for about $15 a few years ago.

  • WHERE CAN YOU DOWNLOAD IT PLEASE????

  • on the internetz

  • Any chance there's a version of this game that can be played on a modern day Imac??? I miss playing this game and seeing this on Youtube really brings back fun filled memories playing this fun and addictive game.

  • Don't think theres a mac version. Seriously, any old crappy PC will do as long as it can handle Windows 95.

  • There's a mac version but it only works on OS 8 or 9, and NOT in classic, or in sheepshaver. I bought a first-gen imac with OS9 at my school auction for $20 a while ago just to play this game. It's great. I had to play with the mouse until I got a joystick just today, which is incomparably better.

  • Seems they virtually carbon copied this mission as training for XvT...

I love this game so much but I can't get it to work on my comp.

  • The collector's Edition is from 1998. It has the orchestrated and inferior soundtrack and it has textures. I'm trying to use Collector's CD, which is the one he's playing here.

  • The one that's playing now?

  • Care to help me here? I got this, ran it in DosBox, but then it asks me if I want to have maximum installation etc. The only thing that I can take is uninstall. If I try to take the installation, it says something like "you cannot select this install option while running the program from the harddrive. Run the installation from the CD-Rom."

I got the thing on a comp so what do I do?

  • Okay I successfully mounted it and all. Now when I select to install and write a directory (assumed that it made one by the one I named) it didn't. When I selected the ones that were there, it failed and lastly, when I selected the predetermined one "C:\TIECD" nothing happened. Please help.

  • assuming it was already installed, make sure you're running the right exe.. there's a few of them in there. I don't really know what to do since I haven't touched the game since the time I made this video, and I took it from an installation that was on an old drive.

  • Okay, I tried both tieauto and tie, it didn't help. It just doesn't want to take those directories. Thanks anyway though

  • I think I had the problem once before but I can't remember how I fixed it... sorry I couldn't be much help.

  • Hehe it doesn't matter. Atleast there is a chance that I'm not alone with it and then there's probably a solution. Ofcourse if you would stumble across a solution I guess you could always write it here since I frequently watch this video. ^^

  • Any idea on where I could get the Collector's CD?

  • You're right, when I wrote "crappy midi" I meant "crappy CD music" but the real message from my post is still correct, namely that the Collector's CD ROM version, with the great iMUSE music system, rules and the Collector's Series version, with crappy CD music, sucks.

  • You're right, when I wrote "crappy midi" I meant "crappy CD music" but the real message from my post is still correct, namely that the Collector's CD ROM version, with the great iMUSE music system, rules and the Collector's Series version, with crappy CD music, sucks.

  • The IMuse was excellent. The music was superb. I wonder why anybody does anything similar today on videogames.

  • Hey anybody, the audio on my TIE CD (the first one) isn't working. The music doesn't work and the soundeffects have a lot of static in them. Can anyone help?

  • Sure, if I want to have to take more shots on something than necessary. I didn't link them for shits and giggles. >_>

  • lol I remember this! I loved it!!!!!

  • Yes! Now I atleast know why my version has orchestral (I want the midi). I got the 98'edition!

  • You can turn the yellow box on and off with the I key i think. Check settings.

  • Good Work! Alpha 1, Target Destroyed.

    Primary Mission Objectives completed.

  • How annoying. Now I felt like playing the game again, and for some reason the yellow boxes showing your current target doesn't show up. It suddenly became a lot tougher.

  • In any case, are there any good mods for it? I remember there was a mission editor somewhere.

  • No idea, but I do remember a few editors. most were shareware though.

  • The "real" music is a bunch of tracks from the original soundtracks (among them of course Imperial March). I prefer those to midis anyway.

  • I never asked what they were.

  • The original CE version of the game only had the add-on disk as far as I know...the orchestral pieces from the movies were added to the re-release in 98, when the X-Wing Collector Series was released. This compilation consists of both X-wing and Tie Fighter, with hi-res D3D support and "real" music. (As well as a demo of XvT)

I have only played it with the real music, so I guess that's why I think the midis seem a bit lifeless.

  • Judging by what i've heard about the "real" music, you have no idea what lifeless means.

  • Wow, I use to play this game SO much.

  • There are multiple versions of Tie Fighter. The floppy disk version for DOS, The Tie Fighter Collection on CD Rom for DOS and then the various Windows 95 upgraded X-Wing/Tie Fighter Collector versions. The Win95 versions had the wav format music but did not have the in game iMUSE midi music system. Which we all loved.

  • This can't be the Collector's Edition... that's still the MIDI music. Unless there's a collector's edition older than the "Collector's Edition CD-ROM I'm thinking of."

  • I don't know what the hell you're talking about, since that's the way the game always was. CE had some extra missions and other generic stuff, or something. I'm willing to bet even the windows version of the CE CD still used midi, because that's how they made the music interactive.

  • Nope. The Collectors CD-ROM swapped out the midi for live music from the actual movies. On the one hand it was nice, as the sound quality was upped, but as you mentioned, it wrecked the midi's ability to que things. There were no more musical tones to indicate a new enemy/friendly arrival or the death of an allied ship. It meant you had to keep an eye on your chat monitor a lot more.

  • Well I got mine in a box, an official box, and it said nothing about live music. I don't know what game YOU'RE playing, but it's not mine. I DO have the collector's CD-ROM. It said so right on the box and the CD, and other than the design differences between the newer windows version and the original, it's obvious it was all there. Sound setup didn't even have any option than midi. In any case, if I had this other version of the game you have, I'd probably throw it out the window.

  • So you're saying there is a Collector's Edition CD with the original midi tracks? Interesting... Is it still runnable on Windows or do you need to run it in DOS? I may just have to do some hunting for this older version. And it still has all 13 chapters of gameplay, yes?

  • I guess so, my memory of it is bad though. In any case, the CD is going to be mainly purple colored for the label, and it won't say a thing about windows, but possibly IBM or something like that. I'd have to check.

  • There were two Collector's Edition CDs released. The first release added a "bonus" campaign to the existing floppy version's campaigns and added some voiceovers during the missions (but kept the MIDI soundtrack). Then came the remastered "Windows" version, which was the same as the first CE, but with the John Williams soundtrack and updated graphics to make it look like X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter. They did the same thing with X-Wing too.

  • You are mistaken. You think of the Collector's SERIES Edition, which swapped out the great iMUSE music system for crappy midi music from the actual movies - I am not saying Star Wars music is bad, but crappy in this game compared to what we hear in this video, which is from the Tie Fighter Collector's CD ROM.

  • Truth be told, I'd actually love to get my hands on an older version of the game. I threw out my floppies when I got the CDR version. The MIDI music was masterfully done (for MIDIs, that is...) and I'd love to fly in TIE Fighter the way it was originally.

  • Great game!

  • it be so awesome

  • We really need a TIE Fighter Remake >.<!
