shame she never attempted a minor key Beethoven work - has a female ever competently performed minor key beethoven piano sonatas (Valentina's efforts are a joke compared to the heavyweights)
She starts way too fast, trips right at 0:19 and has to blast the pedal to cover it, and then gradually lets the tempo slide till she abruptly picks it up again... Don't get me wrong, Argerich has a wonderful technique.. but her sense of tempo has always been less than satisfactory... Listen to her Scarlatti sonatas to see what I mean...
I love you, Martha! Unfortunately, my wife insists I'm not leaving her, and she's the boss! But let me say in passing that you're doing what I would have done if only I had listened to my piano teacher. Time and again I'm picking out my favorite UTube recordings of some piece, only to find your name on it. You're the best!
Fascinating. My first reaction was, "Wooooaaaa girl!! Slow down!" But, the more I listened, the more convinced I became. And it is totally convincing, because this is truly the way she hears this music. Argerich doesn't play fast just for the sake of showing off her staggering pianistic facility - for her, this is how it has to be. And while you're listening to her play, it does indeed have to be this way. She always leaves me speechless with admiration (and envy). Good ole Martha!
she is a genius, but not everywhere, and never with beethoven. we basically hear all her weakness = ability to keep the tempo, fast when easy, slow when difficult....
but this doesn't happened when she plays prokofiev. she simply miss 40% of the notes. :D ( 7. Sonata op.83 )
i agree mostly with you here . Beethoven is not her thing, and that's not even a criticism . No one is truly universal . Brendel understood this and admitted he'd never play Chopin . Pollini is not a Brahms player and so on and so on. But it's interesting when those pianists venture into "foreign" territory . Sometimes you hear them do things and think "hmm, never thought of it that way.." ..haha.
@eddievollbio great comment! well put, though I didn´t quite get what you meant on your last sentence: she missED (misses) 40% of the notes in this sonata? and you meant she is totally accurate when playing Prokofiev?
It's a pretty good interpretation, however, seems a bit contradictory. Of course it seems absurd to try to imagine Beethoven playing the sonata this way, at least in part.
this is the best Waldstein around. The thrilling tempo sets it apart from all the rest. Otherwise, the mvt.can be somewhat plodding in spots. And of course, she handles everything that Beethoven calls for with
i will be eternally grateful to whoever can find out where to find this recording on CD or MP3.

@Sim882 given Uchida's brilliant Mozart 20, I'm assuming she'd have the ability

@Sim882 Uchida has recorded the Op. 111. I'm not crazy about her performance, though.

I think it depends she is rumoured to be pretty lazy when it comes to practice so that might be the reason

Schnabel's interpretation is far better than Gilel's, whose version is perfect in almost everything except for one...

Please listen to Gilels for this sonata... He had a 24-karat gold tone and a musical perspective which Argerich could only dream about.
