"Dennis Yost & The Classics IV" (the original version of this song) rolled into the Carolinian Hotel in Nags Head NC, where my band was playing all week, to do a show (on our night off), right around the time the ARS version came out. Turns out his "Classics IV" were actually friends of ours, a band we knew from Roanoke named "Jumpstreet".

Actually, the group Classics IV recorded and released the song first. Dusty covered the song after Classics IV had made it a hit. As the band that sang the original, I think their version of Spooky is the better known of the two (and is usually thought of as the standard version, of course). But, Dusty did a fine job too.

This is really awkward situation for any artist. It shows just what a shallow world we are living in. Some guys have taken Stipes lyrics and wont return them.

Imagine being worshiped by a pack of hungry hyenas who wont hesitate eating your 3 months old baby if they would only get the chance. Now imagine having to sing a cheerful song to those hyenas.

A couple of years ago R.E.M. played the 40watt in Athens. As Michael finished the song he dropped the papers on the floor. So, this one guy grabs them all up. Michael says : "Pigs get fed....Hogs get slaughtered !" He grabbed them from this guy and then handed them out to the crowd. An amazing memory !
